Hi List,
I have not gotten enough feedback from my earlier E-mail re selling the
MKIII
as an amphibian and I want to remind all listmembers that I can upon request
convert it
to a regular land version and sell it for $17500 and sell the float system
separately.
For more info see:

This technique would result in stronger ribs than the std Kolb technique
due to a lesser weakening in the plane of stress.

Very cool plane. Could you explain "less weakening in the plane of stress"
a bit more?

Kolb Friends -
I've decided to add overboard vents for my fuel tank caps.
My Mark-III uses the stock 5-gal neoprene tanks, with the screw-on caps.
The existing vent hole in these caps is simply a 1/16" hole drilled thru the
cap.
What is the easiest way to install a 1/8" nipple (for a vent line) in the
cap?
Just drill this hole out and thread in the nipple?
Thanks -
Dennis Kirby

Nol,
Great site, fun idea. My MKII is in the hangar, but this is the right airport.
If you zoom out you see philadelphia to the west and McGuire AFB to the
NE.

Weather here in the NE is looking better, and I was off today, so I took
a quick "post winter check ride". Just 15 minutes around the patch to
get re-acquainted with the Firefly.
Even though I've already been over the plan and checked out the engine
over the weekend, I want to be especially attentive during the
pre-flight, just since the plane has not been up for a few months. Sure
enough, the primer bulb was not pumping like it should. A closer check
should a small fuel leak at it's base. That got my attention. A
further check showed a small crack in the nipple at the inlet side of
the primer bulb. When I went to remove it, the nipple snapped off,
putting a clean break in the fuel flow path.
This likely saved me from an engine out due to fuel starvation.
Y'all be careful out there.

Chuck it sounds like you need a pair of snow skis I can make you a set as in
the pics I have posted in the Picture list or I can send you the plans of
them so you can make them your self
I wouldnt use a squeeze primer bulb for that same reason you had a problem
with, I like the pull and push primer its not in the main fuel line as the
squeeze bulb as I have it plumbed I had the same problem once and made changes
then

Dennis,
I drilled and threaded the hex plugs that thread into the caps on my stock
tanks for the 1/8" pipe to tube adapters, and have a pin hole drilled
through the caps under the hex plugs, both vent tubes run back and down by
where the boom tube exits the fuselage.
When I install the new six gallon tanks, I plan to tee the vents together
and go into the tanks the same way the fuel pick ups do with the rubber
grommets.
Also plan on putting a finger filter on the vent line end to keep the mud
dawbers out.

Tried to send this the other day, but was having a problem with my email. It's
apparently sorted out, so let's try 'um again. Lar.
Thinking about Monument Valley......... (it was recently forced upon me) ...........for
those who plan on coming, think about some of the other attractions
in the area, and try to plan for more time. If you haven't seen them, (or even
if you have) click on the link to my website below, and go to "Traveling/Monument
Valley - Kolb - 2004." At the bottom of the page are a few pictures from
Antelope Canyon, right beside the huge, ugly power plant just east of Page,
AZ. It's spectacular, and only takes a couple of hours. I think the cost was
$25.00, and well worth it. Do a Google search on "Antelope Canyon," or "Corkscrew
Canyon." Bring a plastic baggie to protect your camera from the dust -
it killed my Nikon 5700. :-( You can go on an organized trip out of Page,
AZ., or just show up, as I did, and the Navajo tribe has 4 wheel drives to take
you to the Canyon. Also, Erich Weaver and his family pioneered a trip
for us - a 1/2 day rafting trip down the beginning of the Grand Canyon, tho' this
far up it's called Marble Canyon. Last summer, on the way home from Florida
I detoured thru Page, (some detour ! ! ! ) and went on the ride, "for the heck
of it." It was great. Wilderness River Adventures (Google 'em, too) of Page,
AZ runs these for $40.00 each. A bus (full size highway bus) picks you up
at the parking lot and takes you thru a 2 mile tunnel to the base of Glen Canyon
Dam, right under the road bridge. They load you into the same huge blue
rafts that go on the 2 and 3 week runs thru the Grand Canyon. There are mild,
fun rapids - just fastwater, really - on this trip, but no big rapids, no white
water, and they leave the motor off most of the time. Quiet, nice. The trip
ends 3 or 4 hours later at Lee's Ferry, 10 miles downstream, and a bus brings
you back to Page. Soft drinks, but no lunch, are included. I haven't published
the pictures I took on that run, but I did make the exact same run (the
other way around) in my little tin boat in 2002, and those pictures are on my
website at "Traveling/Vacation 2002/Grand Canyon." If you can possibly arrange
for the time, PLEASE try to make these 2 trips. They are lifetime experiences
that you will never forget............and no, I don't own stock in Wilderness
River Adventures. :-) Spoiled Rotten Lar

Uh, why not do that to a "spare" tank instead?
I surely wouldn't want to fly a tank that I'd done that to. I wouldn't even
put it in the plane.

Hey Chuck,
Good to hear from you. Last time I heard you were possibly moving, looking
for another field to base your FireFly. So, did you move, or are you still at
Twin Pine? Hope to see you again at Homer Kolbs place in June.
