Hey List,
I'm still here. Just wanted to give a little update. It was one year ago
today I "screwed the pouch" on the first leg toward MV. Combination of poor
judgement, get-there-itis, weather forecast change enroute, etc. Still glad to
be
here. Came pretty close.
You guys heading out on the big trip and getting into the new flying season
- Have a great time. Be careful and don't let things sneak up on you. If you
catch yourself saying "it will get better in a couple of miles or so" - stop
yourself quick.
I've been working on a bunch of stuff. Been learning to TIG weld. Gotten
pretty good at chrome-moly. Proficient down to .090" on aluminum. Still
working on fine tuning the .050" aluminum for that new and larger fuel tank. That
ain't easy, especially with aging eyes.
I've also started preparing a new runway just down the road from my house.
The runway will be 1550 feet - 1200 feet after displaced threshold. My
neighbor and good friend is helping. He says I was a much happier guy to be around
when I flew often.
My worklist on the plane:
* New larger fuel tank to run with the big dogs more better.
* New gear legs -- Looking at 4130 bent, heat treated to R-48 similar to
what the TNK is putting out right now, I think.
* replace the center stick with dual control.
* replace two bent tubes on side of cage and small tubing on bottom
centerline.
* recover cage and patch small tear in left flap.
I've searching the archives for the best ways to go about some of this stuff.
I've got some detailed questions that I will bring to the list and a few of
you guys that have been down this path already.
John Hauck once called me the "one lucky (something)". That was after a
super trap went through my IVO prop crossing the swamps on the way back from Kitty
Hauck. He was right. I'm lucky to be here today.
You guys take a minute and think. Learn from my mistakes. Not flying the
Kolb for a year (or even a lot worse) is a huge price to pay.
Have a blast - be careful and make a lot of good little decisions.

Morning John B/Gang:
Great to hear from you. Yes, it has been a year since that day I got
a call on my cell phone. Was not a good day in some respect, but
great in others. At least you could talk on the phone and drive a
UHaul truck at the same time. ;-)
Sounds like you have the right attitude, are getting things done, and
will be flying again before you know it. Having one's grass strip
within a very short distance of home is something most folks only
dream about. Of course, you don't get anything worthwhile unless you
have the desire and work for it.
This week is ultra busy trying to get myself and the airplane ready to
depart here for MV next Monday. Gonna miss you again this year, but
maybe you'll be ready to go next year.
Based on your experiences last year and Kitty Hawk 2003, we are going
to assign you as the "unofficial Kolb safety officer" of this gaggle.
Take care,
john h

John,
It's great to hear from you. John W. and I were discussing another "Kolb
Homecoming adventure" for this fall and your name was mentioned. Maybe you
will have the modifications finished by then. When I was making repairs to
mine, after the engine failure, it took some of the sting out of it by
adding the extra fuel capacity.
We've been missing you!
Looking forward to my next trip with 3 Johns and a Gary.

I pulled the fuel filter/pump ass'y out of Vamoose last weekend, and, of course,
the pumps are gummed up. Anyone know what will un-gum them without eating the
seals, etc. ?? New ones are $144.00 each, and I'd kinda like to save these
if I can. I know, I know, it's all my fault, but I'm workin' at it.
When I pulled the system out, (it's all mounted on an aluminum plate under the
driver's seat) I squeezed the urethane fuel lines between the filters and pumps
and they felt fine. I remember someone saying that if they got hard they were
shot. Huh, thought I, guess having them out of the weather preserved them
real well. Think again - they fell apart when I moved the plate and stretched
them a bit. The only fuel lines on the whole plane that are any good are the
black neoprene NAPA hoses recommended by John H. Gonna replace them, too, JIC,
but it's proof he gives good advice.
Non-Kolb: it's necessary for me to contact a person with an old email address
that ends in " @gte.net " I don't think gte hosts email anymore, and I hope
there's a transfer address that people might have used..........?? Anyone out
there know for sure ?? Thanks. Lar.

How to tell you if you are out of Gas
I think I might have the record - 5 times in
22 years of flying ultralights. Beauford says it's pilots error - so..I
guess he's right.
But - none in the last 6 years, so it's not really as bad as it seems.
Now I have a tank I can look back and see thru the tank and actually see
the gas.
I don't mind running it down to 1 or 2 gallons because I have the option of
landing or
- or trying for the next airport - I might run out of gas, but it won't
be on in the air, it
will be on the ground, and I will walk to a gas station.
Before - I had a custom metal tank -like Hawk's old 18 gallon tank in his
Firestar with
senders - both mechanical and electric. Well - the worst thing about
flying long trips
is not knowing about your gas, I've had every kind of gage/sender fail.
I've been flying
and been amazed that I had 1/4 tank left after two hours "according to my
gages"
and then have that horrible sound - wind blowing thru your cockpit and that
awful silence.
You assume that it must be something wrong with the motor, fuel pump, plugs
...who knows.
Well the last time - I found out that if you reach back and squeeze your
primer bulb and it just goes
"Squeeeshh" - it's full of air and you "are out of gas" and your screwed
end of story.
It's the "not knowing" that really makes you miserable.

Dennis,
Whatever product you decide to use, be sure and seal a couple of pieces of gasket
together and put it in a jar of gas for a week or so. Inspect it afterwards
for pieces sloughing off or softness. My bad choice of gasket sealer was responsible
for the only in-flight engine failure I've ever had.
I rebuilt a fuel pump and used the sealer on the gaskets. Pieces of the sealer
came off and went into the carb bowl and plugged up the jets. I was over a park
with an area of freshly planted grass that was just pushing through some very
soft ground. It was only about 150 feet long, and was real muddy. Stopping
was very rapid right up to the concrete barriers at the edge of the parking
lot next to the new grass. I had my nephew haul the trailer to the park, and
we disassembled the plane and were out of there pretty rapidly. I've always
wondered what the park maintenance crew thought when they saw those wheel tracks
starting out in the middle of nowhere, progressively getting deeper into their
newly planted grass.

Yeah - I know you always had at least an 18 gallon tank- smart move.
I never had more than a 10 gallon tank, so the prop would stop
a lot sooner than your's and a 30 or 40 minutes reserve would seen
like forever to me.

Larry,
Try SeaFoam! If you would have used it in your fuel before you let
her sit, it would still be fine (not that I'm telling you what you should of
done mind you), they have done tests that fuel was still ungummed after 2
years of sitting with SeaFoam mixed in as per prescribed. Put it in full
strength & if doesn't do it then you are in trouble! MEK will do it, but it
will probably get seals as well. Thanks Larry for making me feel like I'm
not the only one who has been guilty of stupid procrastination. Now I know
there are at least 2 of us. ....Richard Swiderski

I have the fuel flow option on my EIS, it works good. Tells me what I have
remaining and the endurance based upon present flow rate. I compare that
with ETE (estimated time enroute) from my GPS to base decisions. Keep in
mind that you can arrive at a closed field is some blows a landing and they
have the field closed. Leave yourself a way out.

SEAFOAM ?? Aaaaaaarrrrggh............not Seafoam ?? You know, it never
entered my mind. I must still be touchy after that big go-round of - what
?? - 5 years ago ?? At least ?? I'll take a look at NAPA tomorrow. The
local A&P told me in no un-certain terms that I should keep avgas in it, and
avoid all this. Yah, shore, and work on the thing once in a while, too, eh
