For all you fellers out there that cannot make the MV trip, as I , I have an
ulternative. How about joining in the "Festival of Wings" up in Tennessee.
Go go: http://www.mtug.us/ . From what I have been told, it is a great
place to fly and camp and enjoy the company of other flyers. Will see you
there maybe. Ted Cowan, Alabama, Slingshot driver. Bunch of the guys from
Florida are flying up.

My Firestar II has a "Micro 1000 Digital Tach and Hourmeter" , installed by
the previous owner around 1996, that shows signs of giving up the ghost.
Does anyone know if the battery in this thing is replaceable, or am I going
to have to buy a new one?

Kolb Friends -
I am installing fuel fittings on a gascolator, and need to seal the threads
with an appropriate sealing goop. I'm hesitant to use teflon tape, as
little pieces are known to shred loose and find their way into carb jets.
Someone on the list once mentioned a Permatex product that could be used for
gas fittings that is permanently fuel-proof. I went to Napa Auto Parts, and
found that there are about a dozen Permatex products available. Most are
silicone based. One product claimed to be "fuel resistant." I need a goop
that is fuel-PROOF.
Does anyone have any recommendations what to use for this purpose?
Many thanks -

Unfortunately, Homer Kolb will not attend this year's MV Flyin.
Hopefully, one of these days, we can get him away from all the other
stuff he does and get him out there to relax with us for a few days.
His absence from Sun and Fun was also noted.
We tried!

Dennis,
I was talking to a permatex dealer yesterday. He told me no
permatex product claim a gasoline proof label anymore due to liability &
constantly changing fuel additives in use. The Permatex N0.2 certainly
worked for decades though it is the nastiest stuff to get off your hand! I
use Permatex Hylomar HPF gasket dressing & flange sealant. It stays soft,
holds a gasket & still allows changing its location, its extremely resistant
to all solvents on my plane, good to 600 degree heat, works as anti-seize,
doesn't foul sensors, & its easy clean up. ...Richard Swiderski

My wife has to go back to Michigan to work so she will not be attending.
Also my E-mail address has changed to NeilsenRM05@comcast.net. The
difference is the 05. I find that I get MUCH better prices from Comcast if
they think I'm a new customer or a returning old customer as I move back and
forth between Michigan and Florida. The down side is I don't always get to
keep my E-Mail address. I know I don't get that long term valued customer
discount but oh well.

The current drive to include ethanol in gasoline presents a little
challenge
for fuel proof sealing. The majority of the old sealants were an
alcohol
reduced pine resin. Even the better ones today are reduced with
iso-propanol.
My favorite is "Blue Block" made by Hercules Chemical at fine plumbing
suppliers everywhere. If you want teflon, try Chesterton TFE paste
which has ground
up teflon in it.
I have used the Permatex Hylomar HPE as a dressing on an intake
manifold gasket.
-Works good and doesn't get hard and crusty.
My box of potions and cures gets fuller each project.
My thanks to R. Pike for suggesting GOOP, which I have used for lots
of purposes.
-BB, engine back on top, fixing a few things better the second time.

Today I went round and round with the bosses at work, and they flat refuse to give
me the time off for MV, even tho' we've been talking about it for months,
with the understanding that I'd "let them know when it's time." Spoke to them
2 weeks ago, then tried to confirm it today. Shock and horror - "you should
have let us know. You didn't fill out the paper work." 2 weeks ago I was told
not to bother with paper work if I wasn't taking it as PTO time. Now they've
promised 2 other guys time off then, and, "too bad, Lar - nobody else to cover
the shift." Ahhhhhhh.............what the h.......?? Sorry guys, this is
a huge let down, and I'm really upset. Disgusted Lar.
