Folks,
I upgraded to Photosite Premium ($70/yr), but found out I only get 5GB of BW each
month vs the 2GB I had with basic, so please only look once! It should work
now. Slideshow is the best way to view the pic's. If you are only interested
in Monument Valley pic's, just view that folder and it will save BW.
Sorry for the inconvenience of not being able to view the site!

made a trailer that we run the MK111 onto then fold the wings.>>
Hi Carl,
thanks for the offer.
Having thunk about the problem it is obvious that to minimise the tail
weight the thing to do is to get the fuse tube onto some sort of dolly
BEFORE folding the wings. Providing that doesn`t make problems with the wing
fold mechanism. Should be OK I think.
I have also found some pics on the Kolb list of a dolly with two castoring
wheels and a set up to hold the fuse tube and the wings well above ground.
Only problem is I may find that the roof of the hangar, which slopes towards
the tail, is too low. Things are a bit tight anyway.
The hangar was built to fit a Thruster in the first place and I have had to
finagle a lash up to accomodate the longer nose of the Challenger.
By the way, there is a fly in (first ever) at my field July 30/31. If you
can find Keevil, just south of the Lyneham Zone we are within spitting
distance.
Deafening silence from KiwiMick regarding the noise problems with the Jabi.
Have you heard anything?

Hi Woody,
I've been looking at that option as well, but this is the first time I've
heard of anyone actually doing that. On my old SS, and the previous 912S
installation on this one, the through bolts were just pulled at an angle.
On one hand, that seems wrong, but on the other, it might be better than
having a bolt and washers tightened at an angle between the mount flange and
frame mount. The mount is meant to be able to deflect, but the bolts are
not.
Thanks,
Rusty
I think we also shimmed the metal flanges on one side of the mount to have
the mount sit at an angle in the frame also. I think it required 3 washers
each hole to keep the through bolt straight and minimize the stress on the
mount.

I usually build hand holds into the wing while building and I can manhandle
the beast easier. Since you are ready to paint this option would be
expensive. Next option is to uncover the ends of the trailing edge spars
( just the hole ) and then slide a couple pieces of tube in them that extend
out and you now have a couple nice hand holds about shoulder height that you
can lift on and manouver around a bit. It is easier to lift if you have a
volenteer sit in the seat leaning forward while you do the moving

Subject: | Mk 3 float plane for sale |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: Airgriff2@aol.com
Hi guys, new owners of the field where I'm based have advised me that in the
near future my old hangar will have to come down. I won't keep my plane tied
out so I have decided to offer it for sale. I will give the list a chance first
and then put it on Barnstormers.com. For the time being I also have access to
a J3 & c150 in a club to fly.
Here is a brief description of my MK3 Classic:
1995 Kolb MK3 Classic
Amphibious with electric retract gear. Full Lotus mono 2000 system.
Powered by Rotax 618 (75hp)
Warp Drive 3 blade prop (with Nichole protective edge).
15 gal. fuel tank.
Electric flaps.
Electric trim.
Dual throttle.
Larger & closer full panel, includes:
Asi, vsi, elect t&b coordinator, gear light, low fuel light, low oil light,
Eht, cht, h2o psi, h2o press., Fuel press., h20 temp., fuel ga., compass.
Double dual strobes.
Paint is aerothane (Diana cream & Boston maroon)
Older ballistic system
Large tundra tires.
This plane is in perfect condition, total airframe - 218 hrs.
Engine went to Olenic Aviation at 200 hrs , at which time everything was
checked out and new pistons, rings and seals were installed.
I have flown the plane with the float system but never have gotten it on the
water because the left wheel presses too much against the float as it
retracts. A little work needs to be done such as moving the float attachment plate
(8
bolts) or make a skid plate on the inside of the wheel.
The plane was built by myself (one owner) and is a little heavy so I keep my
passengers to 180 lbs. or less.
Cruises at 65 mph, climbs at 800 - 1000 fpm.
Always hangared at 1I5 Freehold NY at the base of the Catskill Mts.
Plane is flying every weekend. $22000.

Wow Jim your photos are fantastic. I assume you didn't take these aerial
photos thru glass or if you did I have to know how you did it. Would you
send your top 10 and maybe in your case some what more to
gtalexander@att.net
When everyone has their best photos on George's site, I would like everyone
on the list to select the best group of photos from these as a
recommendation for the best photos to send to EAA's Sport Pilot for the
article on our "Kolb's 3rd Annual Unorganized Monument Valley Flyin" Also
send only those photos that you will allow EAA to publish (I will give
credit in the article). Then everyone send me your votes "off list" of the
best photos that describe Our Flyin (12-15 photos)
NeilsenRM05@comcast.net
What I'm thinking is stealing some of Larry Bourne's words from his web site
with his or better shot of the Goulding Lodge and Campground at Monument
Valley. Then some shots of the airplanes (I will need help with the correct
names of all the airplanes and their owners). Then a group of aerial photos
of the monuments with their names if we know them. Finally some photos of
Kolbs flying with the monuments in the background. Again I'm not a writer so
I will take a shot at it and publish to the group for editing, correction,
polishing. Hey if someone else wants this task, picture me backing out of
this VERY quickly. I want to see SOMETHING published in Sport Pilot about
the under $100,000 airplanes and why not Kolbs and our flyin.

Rick, there are quite a few shots of Kolbs flying around the monuments in my
Monuments '03 and '04 pages, and most of 'em are the same people who were
there this year. You're welcome to use any of them, and the text, with, as
you say, appropriate credit given. My personal favorite is the one of Boyd
Young and John Williamson flying toward a butte in the distance in '03. It
didn't send well to Homestead, but I have a much better version on my
confuser. In fact, I believe magazines prefer high resolution digital
photos, so if you choose any of mine, I'll be happy to send whatever
resolution you need of those shots. I sized 'em way down for the webpages.

P.S. I agree........Jim Hefner's shots are spectacular. I haven't been
able to open the MV page yet, but his pics of Bryce Canyon and Lake Powell
are the best I've ever seen.
P.P.S. I'm having problems with Homestead, too, and can't seem to publish
the updated link from my "Traveling" page to show Monument '05. Still
working on it. For now, you'll hafta go to it direct from the email I sent
the other day.

Rick/All,
I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. No lexan around me in the Firefly! That's
one of the biggest reason I am flying a Firefly. I enjoyed photography before
I got the airplane. Adriel Heisey was my inspiration after seeing his plane
and hearing his stories of trailering his plane to cool places and flying local
to get his photo's, I decided to get a Kolb and after looking at the different
models, decided the Firefly was for me.
I assume you are looking for pictures of Monument Valley only, so I could use some
help from the list with your favorite 10. I've looked at them way too much
at this point since I got back and would rather hear what you folks think are
the best shots. Please email me off list with your top 10 votes. Some of my
favorites were Lake Powell, Mexican Hat and Canyonlands shots, but that's probably
because I have been shooting Monument Valley for 4 years and was excited
to see and photograph these other places. Mexican Hat is close to Monument
Valley, so maybe it is fair game too for Monument Valley and vicinity...?? Pretty
incredible geology around the Goosenecks for sure!

Kolbers,
I know this is far from a Kolb related but we are very proud of her. We plan to use the Kolbra to get from our home based strip to where this darling sits.. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/kolbra012/album?.dir4514 Just got her back from the paint shop day before yesterday! Bryan asked how Ms. Dixie is coming along so I thought I would let everyone know. Ms Dixie is taking shape very nicely. I have the flaps almost finished. The RH flap only needs a few more braces and it's on to the mounting phase for the flaps and the ailerons. We at first were going to use a Cessna electric flap motor but after talking to other Kolb builders, Mark German brought up a very good point. If the ele motor failed or any of it's components a go around with full flaps, load and fuel would prove to be a disaster. So were going manual. First thoughts are to put a lever overhead or to the side. Be a bit ugly but it will work. Second thought is to use the flaperon handle to make them work but can we get enough leverage? Anyone with knowledge of how a Kolbra fuselage with a big ole 15 gallon fuel cell in the back is configured feel free to dive in here....As for this weekend I'm taking off. I have 3 days and I am going to use it to relax and enjoy time with my lovely wife and family. Tuesday night it's back to the grind and it should not be long before we start with the panel and wiring and then total disassembly for covering and painting!
One another note...My buddy that fly's a F***gy LOL had a elevator hinge crack
in 3 places. It's the inboard hinge on the LH elevator. He was concerned and made
many inquiries as to why this happened. Turns out many use "Extruded" hinges
in place of the normal hinges supplied by Kolb and the Fergy kit. One note
is that the fergy uses the double or X'ed hinges back there. I called Travis and
inquired and he said no report of the normal hinges have ever failed this way..
When my buddy John Hauck ever surfaces I plan to ask him about this. In the
mean time check em close guys!
As the Mississippi comic Killer bees says "Save up!" as I have.. Now it's time
to go cut grass and wear the 3 yr old out in the pool!
SALUTE to our service men and women who have served to keep this great country

Subject: | More altitude density stuff |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: John Jung <jrjungjr@yahoo.com>
Group,
Here is one more thing I got from the "short course" in altitude
way home from MV, I landed at AZ Dave's home field to pour in my last 3
gallons from the back seat. I had picked up slightly worse headwinds
after turning south, and my GPS was predicting remaining flying hours
that would put me low on fuel. Anyway, on my takeoff run, the engine
had some missing and I aborted takeoff. On close inspection, I found
that the choke lever was not in it's fully off position. I don't know
if it was far enough to cause any effect. On my next takeoff run I
didn't open the throttle all the way. My reasoning was that opening the
throttle beyond about 80% doesn't seem to do anything except lower EG
temperatures. So I waited until I had enough altitude to dead-stick on
the runway and then went to full throttle. No problems, so I relaxed
and continued on the trip.
Since then, I have been reviewing that situation in my mind. it was the
first time in the 7 years that I have been flying the 503, that it ever
missed firing the plugs perfectly. So, I have to think back to my 377
Firestar. Back then, I ran the needle jet one notch lower (clip higher)
in the summer, to avoid running rich in hot weather. This was in
Wisconsin. I decided to try the same thing on my 503 for hot and high
flying in Arizona. Also, I ordered a pair on 150 main jets to replace
the standard 158's. In the high density altitude, I was running low EG
temps, plus my fuel burn should be improved with thing combination. My
average fuel burn for the trip was 4.2 gph. I burn 3.8 at lower density
altitudes.

Previously had a broken exhaust, but in true John H. fashion he applied
a short piece of safety wire and big TyRap and sped on. Now securely
welded. Reports a great time at MV.
