As of to date, 177 reports of BRS chutes being used are recorded.
That means 177 lives of pilots, plus any passengers they might have been carrying.
Below are reports of three Kolbs using them. There's no record of the number
of saves using other brands. I believe John Hauck of our list has saved his
life two times by using a chute on his Kolbs. Evidence shows that the BRS has
been used successfully 12 times at altitudes of 40 - 75 ft. . Mr. Pimm, at
Tullahoma, a couple of weeks ago could easily have saved himself at his approx.
altitude of 200 - 250 ft., except for one bit of pre flight negligence, he didn't
remove the safety pin from the actuating handle of the chute before taking
off.

Why and when would you use the BRS Chute ?
Has anyone on the List EVER had to use the 'Chute " ?

Has anyone on the list ever had a Rotax 503 quit in flight? Just asking as a point
of interest. If so, was it a dual ignition model, do you know why it quit,
and how did you and your Kolb glider do in the ensuing dead stick landing?

There is an excellent article in the June issue of sport pilot on this
subject. I think it covers all of the basics as well as the idea that you should
decide your parameters before you leave the ground.

I haven't really decided if flying to Homer's. May stay around Footlight
Ranch & try to sell my Kolb.
By the way my Kolb is in a enclosed trailer at my house, Flying field is
less than a mile away. I live at Clements Maryland approx. 45 miles south of
DC and 3 miles outside of the Washington ADIZ. I would like to keep my
trailer for the new Kolb. Asking price is 9500 & is negotiable.

Matthew,
This was the Kolb design that came with my kit. I have seen your
design on older Fireflies and I don't know when Kolb made the
change. You might be able to buy an upgrade kit from the folks in
London.

Hi Matt, My FF #007 has the old style rig. I also had the 15" flaperons. When
I recovered the wings this year we rebuilt 11" flaperons. I am much happier
with them. I have not been concerned with the old style stick, but I see your
point. However an AN bolt is a tough Dude to been and even tougher to break.

Matthew,
My Fly, num 098, also has the type of control stick ujoint dealie you
describe. Works ok still after 100 hours. however I have 11 inch flaperons.
I did investigate into changeing over to the new style controls before I
built my kit but decided against it as it would amount to cutting out the
mounting brackets and re-welding the new in. Also moving a rudder pulley and
mount. Not that I am not capable...just seemed alot of trouble for little
gain. I asked about the new systems advantages over the old at Kolb and was
told mostly it was made just to simplify and the old one flew just fine.

Dave,
I fly a FS II with a DCDI 503 that quit once in flight due to fuel
starvation as the result of a pluming problem. As the story goes, "and there
I was" flying my first real cross country to the Kolb Homecoming with John
Williamson and Gary Halley. We were about 5 miles from our first fuel stop
and had started our decent into the area. I was at about 2000 feet and too
far from the airport when the engine quit. The glide was better with the
engine off than with it idling and that almost caused me to over shoot my
intended landing spot. I ended up landing hot but still managed to get it
down and stopped without bending or breaking anything. John and Gary landed
at the airport in the normal approved manner and then brought me some gas.
Those engines run fine with gas in them.
I wish I had at least practiced a dead stick landing during the test flight
stage before it happened for real but I didn't. I've practiced a few since
then though. It's kind of scary to intentionally shut off the motor in
flight the first couple of times but after that, it's kind of nice to just
glide down in the silence of just wind rushing by with the assurance you
know you can handle it. In addition to noticing a better glide with the prop
stopped, I noticed you need a lot of forward stick to maintain your
airspeed. I had a good ending to a bad situation and gave all the old head
Kolbers something to talk about at the fly-in. PS, Travis and the New Kolb
Co. helped me fix the fuel pluming problem the next day and I haven't had a
problem since.

Dave and Group,
I can tell you a little about dead stick in a Firestar. I used to fly
an original Firestar with a 377, and I landed it dead stick many times,
by choice. It flew fine without the engine. I did find that it was
necessary to keep a closer eye on the airspeed, though. If I didn't,
the stall would seem to sneak up and surprise me. With engine on
stalls, the prop burbles when the center of the wing stalls, giving a
little warning. There is no warning with an engine off stall.
Thankfully, I can't help you with information on 503 failures. Mine has
190 trouble free hours.

Tim:
You will be fine, I flew mine at 240# plus. I had a BRS, full enclosure and
brakes. With full fuel I was likely over 500# by 30-40#. Sure did fly
better when I weighed less though.
