Seems like I read somewhere that fuel level in the float bowl can have an

Ken,
Will contact George Alexander and see if he is willing to include your
pictures in his web page. He did an excellent job on last years fly-in
and I sure hope he will do it again this year. Let you know. If you
have additional copies, I would be interested.
Interesting how we are both in the same line of work, at least you still
are, I'm retired. What school did you attend?

I did read it somewhere, fuel level in the float bowl does affect lean/rich mixture.
I do still have some memory left. Though fragmented and scattered.........

Bill,
Now the fun begins. My shop is scattered in two different locations, and my
tools and engine manual are all in boxes. The boxes are marked but they are
stacked in with lots of other boxes. The good thing is that the FireFly is
just two miles away. I have already moved a shop table and light to the
hangar. I have to make hanging brackets for the light and smooth the
crushed rock to level the table, etc. The best part is that I will be able
to get away from moving dirt and seeding and watering new lawns in the middle
or heat of the day to work on the FireFly.
I want to get it back in the air. I am afraid I have caught the John H.
bug. I can fully understand why he takes rambles to Alaska. There is no
substitute for seeing what is at or on the route to the next airport. Even
though my ground speed was painfully slow, I had plenty of time to look at
everything as I passed by. The memory foam seat cushion did its job and I
did not feel any discomfort. At times the thermals and dust devils would
grab me but all it took was a bit of stick and/or rudder pressure to keep
heading the desired direction. In fact after a while I searched out thermal
roads so I could make better ground speed. You can tell when you are on one
when the FireFly starts a little dance from side to side. You can actually
hear the air rushing up beside the fuselage. And for the most part all the
people I met were very pro grass roots aviation.

Yes Ed I was giving them away. I try to do what I can to help if I am getting
rid of stuff. I try to do it on a first response basis. Guy Morgan responded
first but if he changes his mind I will let you know. BTW don't call me

Jack H/All:
Sorry to hear of this terrible disease you have aquired. I hear it is
incurable, however, it can be temporarily arrested as long as one has
a flyable Kolb aircraft, fuel, decent weather, and a place to go. ;-)
Better get busy, get the FF flyable again, pack your bag and fly.
Looking forward to our flight to the Upper Pennisula of Michigan and
Oshkosh next month. We had such a good flight out West. It was great
to be able to spend more time flying with others than solo for a
change.
At one time I had considered not doing any more long solo flights in
the MKIII because of my age. Last year at 65, the flight to Alaska
was a little more difficult for me physically. My flight days were
shorter and I spent more time on the ground visiting than ever before.
This year, at 66, with a wonderful 15 day flight to Monument Valley,
Bonneville Salt Flats, Alvord Desert, Reno, the Los Angeles area and
home across the country to Alabama in three days, I felt good, the
airplane performed well, and I figure I may still have a few years of
long cross country travel left in me if I can afford to put av gas in
the tank.
Jack, you will find wonderful people along your route of flight. Most
will be more than helpful. Some won't know what to say when they see
you land and taxi up to the FBO. Others will say things that do not
come across to us well, as we will probably not understand their
intent. I am learning, very slowly, to smile, nod my head, get my
fuel, and avoid conflict and confrontation with any one that does not
see my kind of aviating the same way I do. In all the years I have
been doing this and all the places my little airplanes have carried
me, there have only been a small hand full of ass holes out there.
Best to ignore them, if at all possible. The good folks more than
make up for the miserable few that do not understand and appreciate
grass roots aviation.
Take care,

Hi Steve,
I remember the first time I left the field in a glider on my qualifying 50
miles x country for my Silver.
The physical act of turning your tail towards the field and heading off
downwind knowing that the field is now out of reach up wind and your next
landing will be (probably) in a field somewhere.
I found it much more traumatic than the first solo.
Of course there is always the chance that when you land out you will be
comforted by a farmers beautiful daughter who will supply tea and sandwiches
and TLC while you wait for the retrieve crew to turn up.
Fluttering eyelashes, heaving bosom, `Oo you must be very brave to fly in
something with no engine` Sigh!
In your dreams. You will probably be met by the farmer who will want to sue
you for destroying his crops and forcing him into immediate bankruptcy.
Cheers
Pat

Gang,
Sorry to take so long in responding to this question but my computer has
been down for a week while I did some work on the house. Here's the problem
in a nutshell: I put a finger strainer on the end of each fuel pick-up. That
wasn't too bad except the fuel strainers had a one way fuel flow device in
them which ended up causing one tank to empty before the other. When I
landed, one tank had about 3 gallons in it and the other one was bone dry
and sucking air. Good lesson learned.

Hello Richard and all, Re: weight of a Subaru install, here is a web site
that builds them for RV's. The installation can vary but the weight should
be pretty close. Click on engines, then FAQ and look at the fourth question
down. It states the installed weight as approx 327lbs. Much too heavy for
the Kolb I would think. www.eggenfellneraircraft.com

I believe that's the 2.5 liter, 190 hp engine for RV airplanes. Too big and
too much power for Kolbs. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the 80 - 100 hp
Subaru engines are in the same weight ballpark as the VW engines.
Installed, with radiator, etc., probably a little more.
