Yes gliders do give you an edge over other type fixed wing aircraft in the
case of flying with out an engine. Of course they are designed to fly
without an engine.

Hi there,
really? What causes that?. I am happy that there is not much movement on a
still day until the sun starts the thermals popping, but, `sinking across
the board`, thats a new one.
Russ was quite right. Unless there is a good reason for keeping a particular
altitude ride the energy that nature gives you. X country glider pilots
rarely thermal these days. They `dolphin`. In essence they slow up when they
hit rising air and dive through descending air as quickly as possible.

I'm curious about any concerns you had about the ADIZ on
the Mexican border ?? >>
Hi John and all,
while I was in the States during April I heard on the radio about a call for
civilians to help patrol the Mexican border. I remarked to Wendy that it was
a charter for every redneck to get out and shoot people. She laughed.
Sho` nuff. 2 days later at breakfast there were two massive, flabby guys.
Shirts open to the waist, tattoos everywhere, Belt buckles as big as dinner
plates, unwashed hair pony tailed down their backs. Harleys parked outside.
`Yup` said one `Ahm gonna get me a Mexican. I heerd it on the radio. They`s
cummin over heer, taken our jobs, rapin` the wimmin, an` takin little girls
of 10 or elevenn yeers old away. The gov`mint aint treatin it right. Ah`m a

I am surprised you did`nt get shot out of the sky, John.

Hi,
I dont think there are many gliders producing that glide angle around today.
We had one, called a Dagling, which was just a square cut pole with a wing
on top. The pilot sat totally exposed on the front, held in place by his
straps. The plane when released at the top of the launch would almost beat
the end of the cable back to the ground. I had a 5 share in it but never
worked up the nerve to fly it.
Our standard trainer could manage about 16 to 1 on a good day. Hence my
pages of 5 minute flights.
Cheers

Kirk,
But it is apples and apples. Glide ratio may help you to cover distance but
it does not help you land. It would be impossible to land a glider at 30 to
1 glide ratio except on a dry salt flat. Imagine making a final approach
and a mile from touch down you are 176 feet high. It would be very
difficult to hit the desired spot even if you could see it. If there were
trees fifty feet tall you would have to have a quarter mile clear spot
before you could touch down. That is why the glider pilot uses the spoilers
to decrease the glide ratio and to get the glider on the ground.
The difference is not so much in the type of plane but in the mode of
operation. The glider pilot never had the option to abort a landing. Also
the glider pilot has much more slow flight experience, and knows to push the
stick forward to cover distance. In the FireFly much of my ability to
"feel" how the plane is flying is masked by engine noise and vibration.
Guess who used to sailplane.

How much distance and time do you have in a glider before reaching terra
ferma from 1000 agl as opposed to a Cessna 150 from 1000 agl with the
engine dead? As far as I'm concerned, if I'm in an applecrate with no
engine or dead engine, I'll take the one with the best glide ratio.

Rednecks are genetic remnants of the Redcoats. The majority were taken care
of at Yorktown but a few remained after the big one, hiding out in the hills
of Appalachia. Won't be much problem at the border though as they will stand
right out in the open with their weapons and get shot easily.

Kolbers: absolutely perfect morning here in the north country.
I was ready to go before 8:00 AM, sun shining, 70 F.
My longest round trip so far.
Landed at a strip that once was a regular sunday morning stop for me.
-Been over ten years since then. Felt great.
The locals had the coffee fresh, a couple "real airplanes" and an
ultralight
landed and a PPC went over.

Always nice to go back to a place we haven't been to for a while.

Dear friends!
You'd be amazed how many crimes like doing nasty things to 10 year
old girls are committed by perfectly legal American citizens.
Best thing to protect the US is not shooting Mexicans, but promoting
our kind of planes. Make them build them! Make them fly! That would
get them busy, get their minds away from 10 year old girls. Flying
provides the sense of control and power. That is what rape is all
about I read god knows where.
So I'd say: Fight Crime - Build a Plane!
(or with an OB kolb subject: Fight Crime - Build a Kolb!)

legal, but that's for an other time)

Hi Guys,
I am going to sell my Mk-3. This time I'm serious ;-)
I am willing to part it out or sell intact. The "intact" will carry
some restrictions. Since the airplane is in Hawaii there are issues
related to shipping. I am planning to remove the engine soon and offer
it for sale separately.
I have put up a site that has some photos and information on the
machine. See it here:

Summer heat is upon us again, tho' not as bad as previous years. It's the mildest
summer I've ever seen in Furnace Springs. It's only 95 deg today, down from
115 one day last week. Anyway, I'm getting ready for vacation next week, and
wanted to hear that mighty roar of Vamoose' engine before I leave, so this
morning I hooked up the freshly charged battery, set the fuel mixture knob to
where I *think* I remember it running best at, turned on 1 of the new fuel pumps,
cracked the throttle, and hit the go button. A couple of turns, a couple
of back kicks from - I guess - the ignition being too far advanced, and it fired.
Man, what a sound. That engine is a real screamer. OK, oil pressure 85
psi; alternator charging; fuel pressure 45 psi; rpm's 2400..........everything
looking good, so moved around to the side, and, gee dad, the propeller shaft
is turning, too. No prop on it today. Looked up into the area between the
engine and redrive, where my recently repaired oil leak was, and got sprayed
in the face with a fan of oil. *%$@#$! ! ! Shut the thing down,
swore bitterly at it and walked away. Went back after a bit and checked
it out. Oil's coming from the same seal as before, and this time I was very
careful not to fold the lip of the seal back when I installed it. Phooooo...........I
dunno. Guess it's gonna sit till I get home from my trip (short
one to Canada this time) and then.......pressure gauge on the redrive's oil
return line ?? Pressure gauge on the vent to the dry sump oil tank ?? How much
pressure does it take to blow oil past a seal, anyway ?? Dunno. I feel a
little (??) sick right now, but we'll see. Lar.

Hi Bryan,
I don't understand your question, sorry if I lost something in the
translation but I will try to answer it. This is why I don't understand your question,
had someone on the list asked if they had any concerns about flying over trees
I wouldn't have asked what does that have to do with Kolb Aircraft just
because there are no trees where I fly. I have to fly my FireStar near the ADIZ
all
the time and a Kolb is great for flying the ADIZ. That in my mind would make
it Kolb related and since you asked how the Air Defense Identification Zone on
the Mexican border has to do with Kolb Aircraft here is more about flying the
border in my Kolb and flying the ADIZ. Defending our borders covers many
issues and I will try to cover only some of them but I am sure glad you asked.
The ADIZ was created to protect our borders, I fly the border all the time in
my Kolb, it is very rare I see someone illegally crossing the Rio Grande, but
I never fly at night. I do see people wandering the desert with guns, most
of the time they are out doing some target practice. If I fly over someone who
looks like they need help or I see something suspicious near the ADIZ I will
get on my cell phone and call for help. The only time I have called is when I
spotted a dump truck illegally dumping roof shingles out in the middle of no
where. Like I said there are no trees here so it's hard to hide from a
FireStar II.
Dave and his FireStar found a South American wandering out on the range, had
he not found him he would have died of dehydration. There are pilots around
here that fly the desert border looking for illegal immigrants and drop bottled
water or else the immigrants would surely die. The desert is a desolate and
forbidding area for anyone to wander around without provisions. Illegal
immigrants are lured by coyotes (people smugglers) with the promise of great wealth
if
they pay the coyote to take them across the border. The coyotes then abandon
the immigrants in the desert to fend for themselves. The coyotes are the ones
who should be taken out and shot.
Speaking about illegal immigrants, this is the fault of our politicians, call
them up and tell them to stop selling out to special interest and take back
our borders (ADIZ). The military is not the answer, they are trained to
neutralize not arrest people. We need more border patrol personnel manning our
borders, flying in Kolbs would be better.
Speaking about our military and why it's not the answer. The following is a
tragic story of an American boy accidentally killed by Marines guarding our
borders. The Marines were doing what they were trained to do which is neutralize
the enemy. This was the fault of our politicians who do not fund our Border
Patrol with more personnel and Kolb aircrafts to patrol our borders. These
days, had this boy been Arabic Muslim we would have heard our politicians calling
for senate hearings and congressional investigations.
ON MAY 20, a U.S. Marine shot and killed Esequiel Hernandez Jr., an 18-
year-old American high school student in Texas. This tragedy took place because
the
U.S.-Mexico border has become a war zone. Hernandez was not a drug smuggler
or a terrorist. He was not an immigrant. He was an American high school
student, born and raised in Redford, Texas, where he was killed.
He was a hard-working student, a typical country boy who enjoyed riding
horses. He planned on becoming a game warden or park ranger. He loved to watch
over
his family's 45 goats with his grandfather's .22 caliber rifle, keeping them
safe from wild animals.
That's what Hernandez was doing the day he became the first U.S. citizen
killed by military troops on U.S. soil since 1970.
The Marine who shot Hernandez was part of a four-person squad of the Joint
Task Force Six, a military unit assigned to anti-drug operations under the
jurisdiction of the Border Patrol.
They were on patrol looking for drug smugglers. They were dressed in
camouflage battle fatigues and hidden in the bushes.
The Marines followed Hernandez for 20 minutes before they shot him. More than
likely, young Hernandez never saw them. The Marines were trained to remain
invisible to the "enemy." He lay bleeding for 20 minutes before he died.
According to the Marine who actually shot him, Hernandez fired at them twice
with his rifle. The Marine shot in self defense, he said. Those within earshot
said they heard only one shot. And people who knew Hernandez all testified
that he was incapable of hurting another human being.
The Texas Rangers have uncovered serious inaccuracies in the Marines' story
during their investigation of the incident. A ballistics study indicated that
Hernandez was shot in the back.
BTW, Bryan you forgot the Do not Archive and hope this was helpful.

This morning was the only nice day we have had in weeks. I hauled the
FireFly on floats to the lake about 7:30 am. The first flight was the first time
I
flew out over the dirt and trees at 1000ft. I finally ran out of lakes in sight
after 30 minutes so headed back to the big lake. After an hour in the air and
about 4 gal I landed to refuel. Decided to head down the river and check out
the Gators. 50ft off the water is the only way to go. Nice and smooth and lots
of places to land. Not many Gators were out this early except for one big fat
b@#%%
&$%#d. As I flew over, he had his tail and head out of the water and
his mouth open. Bet he was grunting. Headed back to the beach. 50 minutes and
about 3.5 gals. Went out two more times for about 20 min. each to practice
landings. Back to the beach and pack up. More questions from the local inhabitants.
A guy with an Adventura landed and visited for a while. He lives on the lake
and gave me directions to his place. Told me where the Beach Bathroom and
Fridge was at his place. He said to stop by anytime and If he was not home to help
myself. Airplane people are great.
4 flights and almost three hours logged and back home by 2:00pm, days like
this make it worth while. The Kiev prop still does not have a mark on it.
BTW, did over 40 landings but only logged 35. Three or four of em were real
close to each other. :-)

That is a really good point Will. The area that I described that I fly over
at low altitude has plenty of fresh water but if someone is broke down or lost
they are there for a while. I always file a personal flight with someone I
know before I fly this area. You can not walk out of this area. I have also
prepared an extensive survival kit in case I get stuck. I am sure that sooner or
later I will come across someone that will be really happy to see a little Kolb
come dropping in. Kolbs are a terrific way to patrol a remote area.

Hey Guys,
I have an "Airworthiness Cert" Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!
I have to change some bolts with nylocks to bolts with holes , castle nuts ,and
cotter pins on the Elevator cables,
Rudder cables and the bolts at the front of the horizontal stabilizers....( it
was built to plans )
Also the threads on the aileron control horn , DOESN"T call for a nut....he wants
me to drill it and cotter pin it...
Now I have to go and apply for my "Repairmans Cert"
Hey Big Lar,
Play with that "engine combo" on a STAND .....Put a "proven"
582 , 912 or whatever...and git that thing
in the air..... ( just my thoughts )
Now I gotta find another taildragger to finish my endorsment ( last one
was sold...)
I know somebody that's close by to get 5 hrs in a "like aircraft" and then I can
get insurance...
Gotta Fly...

John W., et al;
I'd be damn proud to work as yer groundcrew
or ground support personnel for that operation
ya' spoke of earlier.
I think it should have a proper name tho ..........
Maybe sumpin' real appropriate, like, maybe
"BS" & "WILBER".
Of course ya' prob'ly already could figer out
the offishal gov'mint terms there, but, for the
less edjucated it means:
Border Security &
Wantant Illegal Law Breakin' Efforts Recinded
I'm thinkin' 'bout gettin' one o' them perty new
t-shirts, in my favoryte color, with the BS etc.
logo on it, just to show my support.
Whatcha think, bro.?
