Same here. I think it probably has something to do with the ever advancing cost

17 years ago I bought a complete Mk2 kit for just over 10k including engine. I'd
hate to even guess what those of you flying new Mk3's with 912's have invested.

Dick,
I'm sure you would use a 4000 series diode as there more commonly available
In your suggestion, I assume that the activation terminal (connected to the
starter energizer switch) would be raised to 12 volts level when the
starter is to be activated, or is it taken to ground? Solenoids come in
both flavors so this can be confusing and the smoke will be let out of the
diode if placed in the wrong direction. (Folks, for safety make sure you
stay clear of the prop arc when wiring this.)

Sorry to have to pop your bubble and have make you aware of this fact there

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
not sure how this is going to come out but here goes.
in the starting solenoid there is an electro magnet..... when it is
energized the plunger of the solenoid is pulled in to close the switch to
the starter. when the solenoid is de energized the stored energy in the
windings of the solenoid will cause a reverse voltage to be applied across
the windings. this reverse voltage can cause a high voltage electrical spike
on your system..... a simple way to eliminate damage caused by the high
voltage spike is to give it a place to go, ( a diode ) ...
now how do we install the diode so it will work the way we want it to... on
each diode there is a line on one end that usually goes all the way around
the end. when the connector closest to the line is connected to the
negative side of a circuit and the other connector connected to
positive,,, it will conduct electricity.... when the connector closest to
the line is connected to the positive side of a circuit it will not
conduct....
on a negative ground plane the coil of the solenoid is fed with a positive
voltage from the start switch and the circuit is completed to the negative
ground. if we place the diode so the connector closest to the line is
toward the positive connector and the other end toward ground (-) when the
solenoid is activated ( the start switch on ) it will do nothing.... but
when the magnetic field in the solenoid winding is turned off ( the start
switch off ) and the high voltage reverse voltage spike is present. ( only
for a split second) the positive post will show a very high negative
voltage, and ground will be positive.... the diode will then conduct this
reverse voltage spike to ground, thus keeping it out of your other
electronics.
if any would like a picture let me know.

Thanks Steve,
not quite there yet. The Xtra with Jabiru has now been `type approved` as
the result of the work and experimentation that Kiwimick has put in as
dealer.
This means that provided all the builders construct there machines exactly
the same as Kiwimicks they will come under that approval. The individual
machines will be signed off by the Inspectors who have been watching the
building of that particular machine. He will have approved the workmanship
in progressive stages and may or may not do the first flight. He will also
check that the Cof G is within limits and weigh the plane to make sure that
it is still an ultralight etc.,
In my case the exhaust and intakes will have to be modified so that they
match the changes which Kiwimick has had to make to get the Xtra through the
noise tests.
Another couple of weeks..I hope.. then.....
Cheers

Dew point 67, 80+F, slight linear breeze straight from the south.

but lacking enthusiasm. Once at an altitude good enough to keep
the neighbors happy it felt pretty good, the breeze from my
open doorway inflating the left leg of my shorts, cooling
the jewels nicely. The last bend I put in the aileron trim

Hi to all on the list,
Please consider this a heads up to everyone that has an electric starter on
their PLANE, PPC, PPG or what ever you may be flying. We have been seeing
an
increasing number of expensive electronic equipment failures caused by high
voltage spikes. This problem is easily solved by simply installing a 15
cent
device called a diode that can be picked up at any Radio Shack. The coil
that operates the starter solenoid of your electric start circuit will
induce a
high voltage spike into your electrical circuits if not properly protected
with this diode. If you have a left right both type, switch the
instructions
tell you how to do the installation of the diode. However, there are so
many
variations of start switches being used that it doesn=E2=80=99t get
mentioned in all
of their instructions.
It is real easy to do, just wire the diode at the start circuit solenoid
activation terminal with the line on the diode toward that terminal on the
solenoid and the other end of the diode to ground. How simple is that?
Might save
you $$$$$.
PS: If you are using our Hot Box it had already been done for you.

FireFlyers & Kolbers,
I put up some photos on:
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly118.html
The next page includes photos of the Victor 1+ problem that stopped the
flight.
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly119.html
Today, I scraped a little very soft carbon off the top of the piston and off
the upper exhaust port surface. No carbon under the rings. Cleaned the
plugs and then I put most of the engine back together. I am making a new
lower coolant hose support to over come a chaffing problem.
I did not include any photos of how the FireFly traveled the last 100 miles
in a truck. That will have to wait for another day.

John and All,
In my humble opinion, the discusions of trips are more suited to the
matronics chat room than here.

After waiting for that perfect atmosphere to fly in again,
this evening I had to lower my standards a touch.
Dew point 67, 80+F, slight linear breeze straight from the south.
-Like climbing through soup, the engine turning a happy 5000
but lacking enthusiasm. Once at an altitude good enough to keep
the neighbors happy it felt pretty good, the breeze from my
open doorway inflating the left leg of my shorts, cooling
the jewels nicely. The last bend I put in the aileron trim
tab has the stick in neutral with only a touch of back pressure
at 65. -very comfortable. Come January I'll be missing these
shorts and T shirt rides.

In my humble opinion, the trip reports are the best part of this group and
are great filler for the list between times when someone has a question or a
solution. If those several people that seem to annoy you were to leave this
list or just keep quiet, this list would be to soon, a silent empty shell.
If those of you who are attacked by these few people decide to form a list
where you will be welcome as will your trip reports, please be sure to let
the rest of us know where you are moving so we can follow.
DEC
who even tho only a lurker has an opinion as valuable as yours.
