Several years ago I purchased a Mr.Funnel through CPS (California Power
Systens). Iuse it to filter the fuel as I fill the Firestars tank. Since I have
been using this funnel, the Purolator filter (with the see-through glass body)
has remained absolutely clean.
There has been no sediment in the fuel tank.

Dale Kramer may not be in Homer's class, but his Lazair was a dandy on
the butterfly side of
slo&light vs fast&heavy side of the aircraft divide.
Unsticking floats with twin 9 hp Rotax 185's was a challenge; how he
did it with the earlier
5(??)hp Chrysler's is beyond me. Switching 'twixt conventional stick
Series lll and overhead stick
Series l was also a challenge, don't ask how I know that.
A joy to fly with soaring hawks; had to be diligent about snow removal
from those big wings.

Morning Don/All:
Had forgotten about the Lazair with its two little engines and direct
drive piggy backed minature props. Also, didn't he use a clear mylar
cover on the wings?
There was a gentleman at Sun and Fun 1984, flying a four engine Lazair
out of a small ditch of water in the ultralight area. Was barefooted,
had his pants legs rolled up to his knees. Would take off and land in
a matter of seconds. Round and round he went, having a ball.
Last Sun and Fun was hard to recognize the ultralight area. Most of
the old standby type ultralights were not there. CGS Hawk, Kolb,
Phantom were the only ones I remember. The rest were expensive glass
airplanes to fit the Sport Pilot category.

Many years ago I learned a trick from the pilots that flew the JAARS
Heliocouriers at Lakeland and OSH. One of the Helio pilots had
stalled on short final, hitting hard, he was driven down through the
4130 pilots seat frame. Result was spinal injury and being paralyzed
from the waist down. Their response to that was build a seat that was
crash worthy. They "Z'd" the base instead of rigid mounting them. In
addition, they rivet a sheet aluminum pan to the bottom of each seat
to prevent the pilot and copilot from be driven down through the seat
in event of a similar accident.
When I built my MKIII I put rigid seats in it with sheet metal pans
riveted to the frame under each seat.

Bart didn't tell me about that, but a darn good idea.
I looked at their web site. They still have a Heliocourier in the
Phillipines, but don't know how many. I was told many years ago that
JAARS mechanics were already busy making parts from scratch that were
not available anymore.
Here are some photos of a couple airstrips in the Phillipines. One is
900 feet and the other is 660 feet. Both would drastically increase
the pucker factor landing in a MKIII, not to mention a much larger,
heavier aircraft like the Helio.

. No offence. I just found that the book method was the best and the
cheapest method. It can still be removed for repairs also. For those that
know me they know I am more than willing to experiment and change things
around (a lot). Plans are a suggestion not a law but they usually contains
good information.

Bob Erb and his very nice FS and I and my MKIII met this morning at
Geneseo
airport (D52). 4700' grass, don't know what to do with all that runway.
Still some leftover birds there from the weekend airshow (HAG)
Warbird adventures out of FL were selling AT6 rides. -Hope they got
that wing problem fixed.
He was heading out to his boondocks camp which was out of my test radius
but we joined up for a bit heading SW to compare our blazing
performances.
He with his 503 and me with the little suzuki will be a good cross
country match.
Bob, looking forward to an overnight at your facility when I can.

Finally got around to flying my Jabi powered MK 3. I've been too busy
flying other peoples Kolbs and I ignored my own. Very bumpy and windy today
but it felt good to be up again. I did notice a couple problems. My Engine
RPM does not seem to to get to it's full potential. It turns 2700 when I
should be turning 3300. I still climb out quite briskly but it should be
better with that extra 20% more RPM. Cruise around 70 at 2500. Any Jabi
owners out there know what could be causing it? I am spinning a 58/44 prop
that was installed on a Jabi Titan.
Other problem is that one egt is in the normal range (1300) and the other
is at 1410. On a dual carb engine I would play with the carbs but the single
carb seems to indicate another problem. All measurements are taken on an EIS
unit. Any ideas??

Woody/Gang:
Second paragraph is your answer. The engine was propped for a Titan.
58" diamter two blade wood prop ain't much prop for a MKIII. Need a
prop with less pitch cause us MKIII guys are not nearly as clean as
the Titan.
Probably the difference in the sensors. That is why I don't have EGT
on my 912 or 912S. Something else to worry about. The 912 series
engines will let you know if they get too lean or too rich. Don't
need a gauge to tell you.

The Lazair is one of the best true ultralights. I remember seeing one at Oshkosh
in the early 80's do a loop. I don't remember if it would fly on one engine.
I investigated building one, and decided not because of the lack of one man
wing fold. It needed a crew to assemble (or a hanger).
