Jim,
I'm 75 years old, have been flying a Firefly for 4 years and have
accumulated 300 hrs so far. It has been to Florida the last 4
winters and is housed most of the time in its trailer.
I had a hangar about half of its life and have flown out of the
trailer the other two years. I am currently flying out of the
trailer again. If I don't have help, I can take it out of the
trailer and have it ready to fly in about 30 minutes. that includes
loading fuel and doing a preflight. I can put it back into the
trailer in about 15 minutes. My best time to date was 12 minutes.
If I have help, it takes quite a bit longer.
I would be glad to share my experience with you if you are interested.
I had never flown and started flying lessons after I lost my wife.
After 55 hours in a Cessna 172 with instructor, the FAA told me they
would not let me have a medical so the Firefly was the best alternate
option.
I would be glad to answer your questions if you would like to call.
I live in Cincinnati and the number is 513-752-0119.
My web site has some information on my Firefly and trailering and it
can be found at:

I tried to send this to you offline but the message bounced....

Kolbers and Kolbettes...
Interesting 30 minute ride today... rear cylinder CHT was running 40 degrees hotter
than front...360 on rear, 320 on front. When I played with it a little I
found that it was possible to induce a decreasing RPM condition without moving
the throttle... Classic stuck-ring pre-seizure symptoms... The EGT's both remained
normal at about 1080 at 5600 RPM. Gave it PLENTY of gas to cool it down
long enough to get back to airstrip.
Tomorrow morning I will pull off the cylinders to take a good look and de-carbon
the top end.
I have a question... I searched the List archives, but could not find an answer...
I recall that there has been some List correspondence and references in
the past about the near- commonality of part numbers between Bombardier Ski-Doo
parts and Rotax parts... Is there any sort of cross-reference to readily
identify the Ski-Doo part numbers which will fit a 447?
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: | Old thread- Trips |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Larry Cottrell" <lcottrel@kfalls.net>
I retired in June and have been hopping ever since, there is just so
much to do now that I am not hampered by having to go to work every day. I
have not been able to fly other than the little trip that the wife and I
made to meet John W,John H and Gary Haley at the Alvord. My wife, Karen,
managed to draw one of the elusive Oregon Antelope tags this year. I got
mine last year and thanks to an extensive Firestar scouting trip with the
help of Rodger Hankins, managed to kill a nice buck Antelope. There was a
nice buck that managed to snooker me every time that I attempted a stalk.
Naturally over the course of time a plan has emerged wherein I might be able
to put the wife in a position to accomplish what I could not. First however
I needed to make sure that he survived the winter. Since I am so awfully
busy and do not have time to do a lot of intensive driving, glassing and
camping that it would take, the little wonder toy- Dart the Firestar, seemed
to be the logical course. I spent last evening getting the plane fueled and
ready, installing a power hot point for my new DRE 6000 headset. I got to
the field where I fly at 0630, and having a recent post about "trailering
and setup time", I noticed that I left the ground at 0645. The area that I
wanted to check was 65 airmiles away. The air temp was a bit chilly so I
turned on the heater a bit and was quite comfortable in my tee shirt.
Terrain required that I fly at 6700 msl. I was very pleased to find that the
DRE allowed me to listen to my cd player through the Sigtronics intercom, so
the time passed very comfortably. Arriving at the sage flat of my earlier
defeat, no Antelope were immediately observable. The Flat is located at
about 5700 msl and is surrounded by Ponderose Pine. There are two small
creeks flowing through it and three bunches of cattle grazing there. The
flat is about three miles x three miles. I dropped down to 50 feet and
started going around the perimeter of the flat. Nothing but cows were
observable and my hopes were dropping. I was flying low enough that I was
going between the Pine trees that were growing sparsely around the flat, and
flying at 5600 rpm. chasing my shadow. Finally on the final leg of my
tightning circle I saw them. The buck and five does were in a little crease
right in the middle of the flat and near enough to a creek to water when
thirsty. I was able to pick a spot that I was familar with for a blind for
the wife, and then was on my way to Lakeview to refuel. I was carrying five
gallons of fuel in the back "seat", and wanted to refuel. Upon landing the
operator at the FBO kindly held my gas can on top of the wing for me while I
redistributed the fuel in the tank. Quit worrying, I refilled it with $3.50
a gal. LL. I was glad to get it too.
After a visit to the bathroom I visited with a Trike pilot for a bit and
got a update on the weather. He was telling me that the forcast was for 20
mph winds about noon. Since they always blow the wrong direction for me I
got on my way as quickly as I could. I departed 0950. I choose a route that
would take me over some other possibile hunting area which required me to
get up to 7000msl. My ground speed was down to 32 mph while I was climbing
and only improved to 48 mph after I leveled out. Going to be "tough
sledding" for the trip back to Klamath Falls. The air was a bit unstable and
coming out of the North. Very little lift at all which was a bit unusual, I
had to constantly fight for every foot of altitude. I have been heard to
complain about Oregons logging practices, but there were the little logging
roads that would at least give me a chance to survive a engine out. ( I have
instructed the wife that if I don't come back from one of these trips to
draw a straight line from my last known point to my objective. I called her
at Lakeview and gave her my route.) Thankfully the little 477 kept on
purring. At 1045 I brought her to a stop in front of my trailer with a
stiffning tail wind. I logged 3 hours 30 minutes of flight time, burning 10
gallons of fuel, covering 200 or more miles of forest, meadows and ponds.
Having done my scouting trip, I can now get on with some of the more
pressing things that I need to do. A road trip to look at a prospective
horse for the wife, camping trip on the Rogue River for the Oregon Falconers
Assoc., fishing trip to a mountain lake that I know of, and then it should
be time to visit with the buck of my flight of fancy.

Hi Larry C/Gang:
Even at 32 mph ground speed, still beats walking, especially in your
neck of the woods! ;-)

Hi Kolbers,
I have a customer who purchased a Kolb MK3, 583, 3blade Ivo.
She stalls at 55 mph in any configuration, tailwheel touches as well before the
plane
stalls.
Any obvious places I can tell him to look?
Thnx,

Peter, that one is difficult to believe. Airspeed indicator
calibration?
Short wings?, No center section?
Extremely heavy aircraft/pilot? The tailwheel touchdown isn't
unusual at a full stall a foot or two off the ground.

Hi John,
Have you had any problems with the DRE and transmitting noise. The guy
at the Lakeview FBO said that I was coming in loud but with gobs of noise.
So much that he couldn't understand me. I have not had problems with my
other Sig headsets. My plugs are new resistor types.
Will check the next time I fly and check with the sig headset and see if
they are clearer. Hearing is swell.
Larry
