I'm flying a Firestar with a 447. I use a lap-mounted Icom A-5 and a David Clark
headset for com. I'm trying to find a good antenna type and placement. Some
suggest folded back beneath the cockpit, attached to the aluminum floor. Others
say maybe out on the wing or back on the empennage, pointed straight up. Still
another idea is to use a flat bi-pole behind the seat. It seems a larger problem
then I'd anticipated. Anyone have a good placement they'd like to share?
Thanks.

In my M3X the antenna will be mounted as far forward in the nose pod on
the inside as I can. I have a small alum plate as an anchor base plate,
that also serves as ground. Trial and error till I find the quietest
static free area.

Judd I have mounted a stainless steel plate between the landing gear legs a
bit forward of the tube that connects the bottom of the gear leg sockets to
mount my antenna and strobe light on the under side seems to work great for me

Gang,
As you might remember I just got a DRE 6000 headset. Visited a FBO about
68 miles from here and the guy complained that he couldn't read my radio at
all because of the static. I contacted John via the list part of his reply
is above. I also contacted DRE and got a reply from a nice fellow named
Garth Wilson. Well this morning I went to visit a guy with a Gyro and set
the wife up with a spare radio. She said that the radio almost scared her
out of her skin, no static, just a bit of motor noise. I tried transmitting
at 6000 and then at 6600 RPMs I then hooked up the Sigtronics that I have
been using and the transmission was the same, but the difference was very
apparent in my ability to receive. Sig was very quiet and hard to understand
and the DRE was booming and clear. I don't think I will switch back. It
appears that you were right John, although most stations can receive very
well, most do not transmit half as well. The FBO was booming, while he
claimed that he could not understand me at all.
I also had a interesting happening this morning on my trip. It is only 19
miles to the airstrip that was my destination, but over some pretty hostile
terrain. I landed and we looked at each others planes and then decided to
visit another strip that belonged to another EAA member. I pulled on the
starter rope and it did not start. I pulled the enrichner circuit, still
nothing. Then I happened ( duh) to notice that the throttle was at full on.
Cut it off, gave another big pull, and the starter rope broke. The remainder
of my rope was long enough, but I didn't have any tools to repair it with
me. Of course the guy did, but I will never leave the ground again without a
basic set of tools. Could have been a long walk to some metric tools!

Anybody know if Kolb is going to be at Oshkosh? The EAA Exhibitor
listing from the web side does not list Kolb or The New Kolb.
I sent an email to Travis but have not heard anything.
I should be there Monday and Tuesday. Hope to meet some of you.

Hi Rex/Gang:
TNK will be at OSH, however will not have a display in the Ultralight
area.
They will have a display in the main area. Check the program for
location.
Dick Rahill will fly the Firestar and will tie down with the gang that
flies in and camps on the far side of the UL airstrip.
Miss P'fer and I will not make this years OSH. Got some stuff that
must be attended to that takes priority over little airplanes,
friends, and OSH. ;-(
Take care,

John,
Since you are not going to Osk. and as you have probably noticed the sudden
burst of activity with the US and Cuyuna, and since you have probably the
greatest amount of time and experience with the combination, how about writing
a long treatise on the care, keeping and feeding of the beast.

Hi Ray/Gang:
Think you propably have the wrong guy ID'd with Ultrastars.
I have 385 hours in mine, 125 hours in my old buddy's (Rest in Peace
Ed). That's barely 500 hours.
Also, of utmost importance is the fact that the last time I flew mine
was October 1985, and Ed's was June 1987.
Guess I am like most of you all, time has a way of fading the memory.
Soon as I get a few minutes I will be glad to share some of the
memories I have of my Ultrastar experience and its power plant, the
Cuyuna ULII02. Although a fun little airplane, it did have some
problems as well as some darn good points.
Take care,
john h

The Baltimoe, Md. news had a clip on an "Homebuilt" crash this evening. It
occured around Salisbury, Md on the eastern shore late this afternoon. The 80
yr old pilot was on his madin flight. That is all I caught but keep your eyes
open for more news.
Kolb is supposed to be there in force according to Travis and hopefully
there will be a MK lll X there. I am about 60 days from launching mine (N615RT)
and want to fly one before hand if possible. It will be interesting to see if
any other Delaware Kolbers show up (or even exist) .

Larry Cottrel, i sure enjoyed reading your post doing some recon for your
upcoming elk hunting trip. I'm not a pilot yet, but appreciated the article
because of your utilizing your plane instead of a backbreaking trek through the
mountains. I've been following the Kolb list for a few weeks now, and
especially enjoyed the x-country post. Been looking at different planes, for about
a
year now. Checked out Sonex which i liked but, at 66 years of age now,
getting in & out of it will only get harder, especially for my wife. ( That is
if i
can ever get her to fly in a small plane.) Something low & slower seems to
appeal to me more, along with the easier access in & out of the cockpit. From
what i,ve read here, there are some pilots here my age & older. For me, thats
very encouraging! I got excited reading the story in Sport Pilot, july edition
about Steve Boetto,s Firefly on floats. That would sure work out at our Fl.
winter home which has lake access. Keep it at the house & use the lake for my
runway, love it! But then i start thinking how nice it would be to be able to
take a passenger to share it all with. Just not sure i can afford a new 2
seater with a 912, if i have to hangar it. I sure would appreciate hearing
from some of you , about your former planes, or just other planes you flew
before deciding on a Kolb. Enjoy the thread, best regards. Dave Culver

Kolbers and Kolbettes...
Just to close the 447 carbon saga, today I allowed a VISA card to carry me over
to the dark side.... Today, dear Kolbers, I bought Amsoil
synthetic 100 to 1 oil...cases of it.
I might end up doing Pennziol air-cooled penance later on, but tonight the Pennsylvania
carbon remnants are still too fresh under my battered fingernails to
feel depressed about this... Henceforth, I refuse to permit distant, arrogant
Austrian technocrats to dictate an established schedule of pre-planned misery
to me every 50 hours of operation...It's bad enough that they extorted all that
money for the pleasure of owning this wretched thing... The mere fact that
they slyly "recommend" the paraffin based P-oil @ 50 to 1 on the one hand, while
some pages later in the "bible" casually informing the hapless victim to mentally
gird his loins for the grotesque and highly painful 50 hour decarboning
ceremony which results from that very usage, is patently ludicrous... The only
thing more ridiculous is how I failed to recognize this fiendish little loop
until it slapped me between the running lights.
Make no mistake.... I will likely feel deep sympathetic pain in my tailbone as
I fire up for the first time on that skinny new mixture...listening subconsciously
for the metal-on-metal symphony...but I have a feeling I'll get over it quickly
and the contraption will survive. Too many other pioneers have successfully
gone before...
I plan to routinely peer into the plug-holes every few hours as this new (for me)
adventure unfolds... Who knows -- maybe I'll even be able to see the reflection
of my Macanudo-stained front toofies as I grin in through the holes at
the tops of those recently hand-polished Austrian pistons...
