--> Kolb-List message posted by: "PATRICK LADD" <pj.ladd@btinternet.com> By rigging I'm assuming you mean preparing for flight >> Hi Dave, Quite correct. Thanks for the info As an ex glider pilot I am well up on wing stands. Glider wings tend to be a lot heavier than those on a Kolb and even with a strong and willing crew a stand is a must. I had hoped that it would be possible to swing the wing into position with the tip on the ground and the strut attached at the fuselage end, then get your back under the wing and lift it until the other end of the strut can be fixed. Anyone do it that way? Incidentally to support and steer our gliders on the ground we usually made a fibreglass gaiter about two feet long which clamped around the fuselage at the tail. This had a large single castor bonded to the lower half of the gaiter. The gaiter was hinged horizontally. The top half of the gaiter closed with a couple of over centre latches. The fibreglass gaiter was laid up to include a fairing around a few inches of the bottom of the fin. This stopped it rotating around the fuselage. Cheers Pat do not archive --

Yes, Thanks to Rick Neilsen and also all who contributed with their comments and pictures. This is a great article and a major incentive to get my plane done so I can have some fun too. In regard to Dave Culver's question about Kolbs. I looked at many different planes for about 12 years but always seemed to come back to a Kolb. A good and proven design, strong and good at the type of flying I like to do. An added bonus has been the support from the great group of people building and flying Kolbs and also from the factory personnel. Rex Rodebush Do not archive

Anyone do it that way? I always do it that way on my Twinstar and mk 3's. First rest the wing tab on the pin that is still in the fuselage mount. Then remove the pin and reinstall it through the wing mount then lift the wing up. Do not allow anyone to help you lift the wing. It makes it harder to get the strut pin into the wing. The rest of the set up is pretty straight forward.

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Hauck" <jhauck@elmore.rr.com> plane it | would be the Kolbra instead of the mark III extra. | Bryan Green Hi Bryan G/Gang: First of all, I like the way the Kolbra performs over the way the Xtra performs. The Kolbra is a little faster in climb, cruise, and top speed over the MKIIIc. The down side to the Kolbra is cargo space, and places to put stuff I use and like to have within hand's reach in the cockpit. My MKIII suits me just fine. Was never impressed with changing a good airplane for the sake of change, i.e., making the nose big, flat, and long, so my feet would be pointed straight ahead, and making a center mounted instrument panel on a pedestal. I look more at functionality and less at style, and keeping up with the Jones. My MKIII has been modified to suit me and my flying tastes. It does a great job. That is why I am still flying it. As for the MKIIIc, I wouldn't want to fly one in the stock configuration either. No place to put your stuff, like tent, sleeping bag, clothes, tools, chow, etc. The Kolbra was being tossed around in my Brother Jim's and my head many, many years prior to the initial Kolbra being designed and produced. We would have built it way back then had we had the time and the money. john h MKIII, 912ULS

--> Kolb-List message posted by: Richard Pike <richard@bcchapel.org> Depends. It only took me three months to build my MKIII to the point of being ready to cover. It took another 15 months to cover, wire and plumb. But then my MKIII is day and night VFR legal, with Class B airspace legal avionics, modified fuel system, modified gap seal to fit an out of production ballistic parachute, etc. - delays, delays, delays. If Woody kept his wiring and plumbing to the minimum necessary, I can see 150 hours happening. I once saw a hyperactive neighbor completely fabric, paint and finish all four wings of his Easy Riser biplane in a weekend.(!!!) --> Kolb-List message posted by: Richard Pike <richard@bcchapel.org> Well actually, he figured out that if he totally modified the landing gear, wheels and brakes, then he could postpone committing aviation for a bit longer, so he did, and sold his original gear. I bought his gear, tires and brakes, and yes the tires are dry rotted. But that's OK, because now when I go to fly-ins, people look at my tires and immediately assume I have the first MKIII that Homer ever built... Richard's cost sounds about right for a new spacer from what I recall from when I ordered one. jerb At 10:09 PM 7/29/05 -0400, you wrote: >--> Kolb-List message posted by: ElleryWeld@aol.com > >thanks Richard Yah I guessed right the guy wants double that for it is there >anything special about it and pics would help if you have any > > Ellery Batchelder Jr. >Do Not Archive > >
