Beauford,
The guy who parks his 503 Challenger behind my hangar had a recent problem
with CHT's making strange indications on his EIS. He would get spikes over
400 and then drop to normal ....all we did was bend the sparkplug gaskets away
from the head and "bingo"....back to normal.......?????

Is Thom still on this list? I am curious how the Titan flys compared to
the Kolb? I heard that they glide like a brick with the engine off. But
they are probably fun to go cross country in. ~ Earl (friend of your

Earl & Others,
I'm still here and will always like and fly Kolbs whenever I get a
chance. I had to downsize to a single airplane so ended up buying
something between a Firestar and the Cherokee 140 that me and three
others used to own and fly. The Titan Tornado 2 with 912UL (80 hp) fit
the bill.
Mine is one of the few Tornado II 912 around that has the short (20')
wing rather than the standard 23.5' wing or the long 26' wing. It is a
little faster than the standard wing on both ends of the spectrum. I
really like it except for the tiny back seat. Fortunately, the only guy
brave enough to fly with me is small enough to fit there without too
much discomfort. He and I flew from Buffalo to Cape Cod for a few days
in June, a distance of 414 miles one way. We did it in 4 hours with no
wind.
The Tornado with the short wing does not glide well but in most other
respects it handles like an original Firestar but with much quicker and
somewhat lighter control response in all three axes. I fly a typical
UL type pattern, high and close. On final I put in full flaps and point
the nose down and hold 60-65 mph until flare. The very effective flaps
are great for getting down in a hurry.
With the in-flight adjustable prop solo on a hot day, it climbs at
1,400 fpm, even with the short wing. When I'm flying with Ed Steuber
and other slower aircraft, I put in about 1/3 flaps and cruise at an
indicated 65 mph or so. The stall speed with the short wing solo is
about 52 mph clean(TAS, ~45 IAS) but the nose is so high that I have to
put in a little flap to get the AOA down to near normal cruise angle.
If it did not cost so much to change out, I'd probably put the 26' wing
on it and fly just about as slow as the Kolbs without flaps and still
get a comfortable cruise speed of over 100 mph if I cared to fly that
fast. Most of the time, even when flying alone, I slow down to 80-85
mph so I can enjoy the view better, right down on the deck when the
situation warrants.
Even with the short wing I can operate (solo) in and out of Bob Bean's
1000' long cow pasture he generously calls a runway. BUT the long wing
would be much better. I'm not selling Titans and probably would have
bought a 912 Kolbra if one had been available in my price range, but
the Titan was available in my price range and located only about 1 1/2
hours flying time from here, so that is what I did. I don't regret it
but do miss the lower and slower Kolb world. I just might pop for a
long wing after all!

If the information hadn't already posted on this list several times already,
you might have a valid point. BTW the same information is available on Kip's
Kolb list, the phone book, and pretty much anywhere else if you look hard
enough. I was just trying to cut Paul's search as short as possible.

Beauford,
Is it possible you don,t have enough pitch. I know it is a long shot
but maybe it needs more pitch. Just a thought, as it seems to be giving you
fits. When you solve this one it definitely needs to be archived.

Ed, too little pitch gives you high EGT's.
Beauford's problem is high CHT's, which might be happening
if he has too much pitch, his climb out is at 6250.
Same as my 582, except a 447 is not a 582.
Rereading his previous post, he has a level WOT at 6400,
which is not too bad, but peak power comes at 6500.
Book says that max rpm of a 447 is 6800.
Could take out a hair of pitch, except that since he is already at
EGT of 1020 to 1100, less pitch would require raising the needles.
Hmm... mutter, grumble........
Tell ya what Beauford, if nothing else works, take out a little pitch and
raise the needles a notch and see what happens.
Shouldn't have to do that, since it worked at the current settings before,
but as long as you are out there sweating and grinding your teeth anyway,
why not?
Wheee.....

Thanks James,
Talked to Ken and Bobby this eve..... heck I am plastered all over the
internet.. I have no probs... met many nice folks VIA the net... even old

BTW did you all know the post to this list are retrievable VIA goggle LOL
.....
As for an update on Ms Dixie we are going strong.... NOT to put down TNK
however the plans at this point are useless.... For the record books TNK
kits are well put together however the Kolbra is not a first time builder
friendly kit plane...
As of tonight I rigged the front rudder pedals to rear pedals push pull
tubes.....this is a mod... in the comic book they call for cables....yeah
right... My prob is there are two thimbles that the rudder cables go through
in the fuselage that are not mentioned in the comic book......... I am not
sure who this fella who made the pretty plans book for TNK is but I am sure
he had the best of intensions. His colorful illustrations are pretty and
helpful when it comes to hardware but a for solid dimensions well....... way
off...:-)
Enough bithcin because us Kolbra builders play WAY out side the sand box!

Ed...
How ya doin...?
Good thinking, but I don't think pitch is the problem at this juncture... I
de-glazed and honed the cylinders and reasembled the engine this afternoon.
There was just enough glaze present to have caused the problem, I believe...
they look better now.
Tomorrow morning I will tie the tail down and run the break-in sequence on
Pennziol AC... we'll see what happens.
I did add half a turn of pitch into the Ivo this evening, just to make sure
the BMEP was high enough to encourage ring
seating... It was turning about 6080 to 6100static... the change should
bring it to 5950 or 6000 static...about right for break-in.
We'll see what happens... If they seat, I probably will not bother with
archiving... I'll just erect a granite monument
on the tiedown... thanks for the note

Richard...
As soon as the rings seat, I will restore the prop to give 6400 at wot in
level opns. Am getting enough carbon on things to believe that it is
succiciently rich... may actually consider leaning it out one notch if I
ever get these rings seated.
Thanks for the experienced input, Sir...
Will give a full report when it either explodes and burns down, or when the
rings seat.

Richard. I guess I am confused. I sure thought someone on this list said If
your rotax gets too hot when you are breaking in a new engine you need to
crank more pitch in the prop. Wont to high of EGT readings cause the heads to
get hotter too? I am paying attention because I might need to know the remedy
myself.

For those interested in the Firestar II I mentioned a few days ago, here are the
vitals.
503 DI DC
Electric start
Oil injection
BRS 750 Soft Pack
Kuntzleman Dual Magnum tip strobes
15" 6.00x 6 tires
Drum heel brakes, cable activated
IVO quick adjust two blade prop (Black blades)
Hobbs meter (.5hrs) thats point five, not five :-)
2 1/4" analog tach
2 1/4" Winter ALT with Kollsman window
3 1/8" 0-100mph ASI
2 1/4" Dual anolog EGT
2 1/4" Dual analog CHT
Ritchie compass, questionable? but seemed to be pointing properly
Ultracom inercom
1 brand new never been used Comtronics helmet/headset combo (Blue)
1 used Comtronics helmet/headset combo (Red)
Two seats and four point harnesses
Aileron counter balancers
I am 6' and 186 pounds and wedged myself into the back seat, there was no way
I could have fit a helmet on nor would I have flown there as a passenger, children,
midgets and very trim women folk are all that are fitting in there!
It has both the full enclosure and door, including the rear Mylar, and also the
smaller windshield with no doors. Everyone I have showed it to agrees they would
probably remove the full enclosure and install the windscreen only.
Velcro on Dacron gap seal over the BRS
The plane was completed by Kolb and comes with the factory supplied Bearcat enclosed
all aluminum trailer that only has miles from London KY to Palmetto FL,
than to Ford City PA, aprox 1500 miles total, it is clean.
There was some trailer rash done to the wing leading edges during loading that
the deceased owner pretty much had patched up minus a little more finish color,
he had also splashed some Polytone bluish silver paint on some white areas so
a little touch up will be required. Paint, Polyspray and MEK come with it.
Also some assorted odd tools that are in the trailer tool shelves go with it.
All the sales receipts add up to over $35000.00 ( it does not pay to have someone
build your plane for you)
The asking price is $21000 for the whole works.
I should have photos ready to send to those who have inquired in a day or two.
Due to running out of memory space in my wifes camera, I have a lot fewer than
I wanted.
