Hello Josh,
My name is Noel Bouchard, and i also live in Mtl ...
As far as i know ... there is no Kolb dealer in Canada ...
(But i may be missing something ...)
I am the proud owner of a Kolb MK II (Twinstar) since 1999.
Now ~ 320 hours on it ... and i love it !
You made the right choice in choosing Kolb ...
Feel free to contact me at (514) 723-6663
(or by email) if you want ...
Nol
Dear Kolb Group,
Just joined this group, I don't own an ultralight yet but I am in the
process of finding one. The Mark lll XTRA is what I have in mind. Do any
of you know if there is a Kolb dealer in Canada, specifically in Montreal
or
Toronto or that general vicinity.
Your help would be greatly appriciated.

Need a bit of help from some of you MKlll X builders on two issues.
1. Which BRS unit are you using on the Xtra and does BRS supply the proper
mounting hardware?
2.The fiberglass fairing on the wing gap seal is giving me fits (probably a
mental block). It appears that it will not fit over the windshield if I trim
it enough to fit the contour of the wing LE and sit on the top windshield
bow. I do not have the wind shield in yet and am trying to get the fit close for
now and do the final fit after engine and electronic's testing (radio's,
etc.) after which I will install the lexan. Does it help or hinder to install
some velcro to push the gap seal out from the LE a bit?
How to handle any other sticky issues on these last few weeks would be
appreciated. Have Gap Seal, Nose Bowl,& windshield as last remaining large items.
Thanks in advance

Hi there,
`fits` in this case is not the word to use. Mine didn`t fit any where, about
like my army boots, in fact I was convinced that it was for another aircraft
entirely.
Glad someone else is finding it odd. I thought I was the only one
Good luck

Don't know how handy you are with f'glass but a fairing is fairly easy
to make. We used to get a chunk of foam insulation -- here it's 1-2-or
4"thick, and blue -- and
simply carve & rasp it into shape -- then cover it with newspapers laid
on with casein glue -- here it's Elmers, watered down some -- make sure
no gaps. Then lay the glasscloth on & saturate it with the resin.
Finish with "angel hair", a finely woven f'glass. Can even make a
custom gas-tank; after the resin has cured, pour gas (sorry, petrol) in
& it will dissolve the foam & it all can be poured out. (Doesn't do the
gas much good tho) Hat-sections and stiffeners can be added to the
outside if needed.
Egad! if adversity strengthens one, you're Charles Atlas (do you know
that reference?)
Sorry you're having all these complications -- has your prop arrived
yet? And they didn't send a left-handed one??
Good luck, keep the faith,
fair winds,
Russ

I had to build up my fiberglass fairing at each side where it starts to turn
in at the side. I laid about 1 1/2 " of glass cloth on the inside and
sanded the outside down so the thickness was about 1/8 ".
Good luck

Kolbers,
Probably a once in a lifetime sight here in the middle of New Mexico two days
ago. My brother calls me from my west and says there is an interesting aircraft
that just went over him going west to east. I jump out of the dump truck
and look up and at about 3000-3500 AGL is the space shuttle piggyback on its 747
headed back to Canaveral. We don't get many interesting visitors here at the
ranch, but this one was certainly welcome, even if he was in airspace normally
reserved for Kolbs. Wish I'd happened to be up in the Kolb instead of the dump
truck - then I'd of had a camera, too. One of those things that makes you
proud to be a U.S. American. I guess the enormous weight of the shuttle kept them
from flying higher. Anyway I was glad for the show.

Thanks for all the input. Lots of good pros and cons. Should help one to

Subject: | St. Clair's Bottom |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: Richard Pike <richard@bcchapel.org>
Had a most excellent flight this afternoon, and thought I'd share the high
lights.
About 50 miles north east of Kingsport, Tennessee is the little town of
Chilhowie, Virginia, right on I-81, and about 6 miles south of there, right
where the creek loops back on itself is a place called Saint Clair's
Bottom. During WWII, the guv'ment put in a grass strip about 2500' long as
an emergency field for airplanes traveling through the area. Back in the
50's, Virginia decided they needed an airport in that area, and planned to
turn St. Clair's Bottom into a real airport. Unfortunately, word got out,
and the land that was selling for $3 an acre jumped up to $3000 an acre,
and Virginia looked elsewhere. That resulted in the Mountain Empire
Airport, up near Marion.
So the grass strip languished, until about 6 years ago, when a bunch of
ultralighters started keeping their craft there and fixing the place up.
Three years ago, they figured out that it would be a good public relations
ploy to have an annual picnic and invite the locals around the area to come
and eat free, and look at all the little airplanes.
So today after church, Kolb's 20P and 82EF headed NE into the best flying
weather we have had here all summer. Blue sky, a few little puffies,
friendly thermals, and good food waiting at the destination. By the time we
got there, the burgers were gone, but I had a 'mater sandwich on light
bread, (there's just two things that money can't buy, and that's true love
and home grown tomatoes...) baked beans done with brown sugar, chicken n'
dumplings, cold macaroni salad and the last best piece of carrot cake with
sour cream icing. By then I was ready for a nap, but there were too many
airplanes to look at, and too many friends to talk to.
Some old fella with a beard down to his navel and a red and white Kolb
Twinstar MKII was giving kids rides, he flew for two hours straight, and
the kids loved it. There was a Hatz doing barrel rolls and hammer heads, a
sure-nuff aerobatic expert in a Citabria wearing it out, and about a
hundred and fifty people watching little airplanes, teenage boys watching
girls, teenage girls pretending they weren't watching boys, old men and
women sitting in the shade and trying to keep cool, and drinking from the
never ending supply of iced tea. There was even a do-it-yourself Bluegrass
band on the porch providing entertainment (?) or something. It was great.
About 6 PM, it had cooled off a lot so the two Kolbs and the Aircam set off
down the valley picking out various winding and interesting looking back
roads to take the next motorcycle ride on. Got to South Holston Lake and
flew down the lake about 100' up, all the girls on jet skis waved, and we
rocked a wing or two.
Landed at South Fork, the Aircam's home strip and looked at the
under-construction-CGS Hawk, it will have an HKS engine on it. Ought to be
done next month, looks like it will make a fine airplane. Discussed the
price of gas, and wondered how the Aircam would do with two HKS 700E's on
it in place of it's two 582's, since the 582's are approaching TBO. Decided
that it would probably do fairly well. First get the Hawk flying, and get a
better appreciation of the HKS.
Headed home about 7:30, by then it was cool and smooth as glass. Got home
and actually made a decent landing for a change. Nice. Decided that it only
takes one day of good weather and a good flight to make you forget about
all the crummy ones you had for the rest of the summer.
