Denny, fellow Kolbers
Sorry that it has taken all week for me to reply, returning to work and preparing
a new home (well, sprucing up a 31 year old house that is new to me) can keep
you busy!
I want to express my most sincere thanks to Denny for the all the help he provided
me this past week in making the purchase of my Firestar II a complete success.
The hospitality he and his family extended, the careful guidance and wealth
of suggestions, tips and recommendations he offered were invaluable. He willingly
shared his time, years of experience and knowledge, making my transition
from Kolb dreamer to Kolb owner an enjoyable reality.
I made the long drive to PA from TN with an empty Nissan Pick up truck and returned
with a beautiful airplane, memories of an exciting journey and several new
friends. The old saying that you will not find any nicer people than those among
the aircraft community was once again proven correct.
I also want to mention the seller of the plane, Mary Lib Saxion, who is quite an
amazing woman. She had such a level of energy and enthusiasm, truly a breath
of fresh air. I hope to be half as spry when I near her age! She welcomed me
and ensured my short visit was comfortable and made me feel completely at home.
The only sad note, were the circumstances that caused the sale of this plane,
but she handled the emotional stress with dignity and pride. She left an indelible
impression upon me.
Now I will begin the preparation of the Firestar for use. Since it has basically
been in storage for roughly the past 2 years I will give it a complete going
over. As well I will be seeking some training time in a Kolb like aircraft (if
anyone knows of a willing instructor in the middle Tennessee area please let
me know!) I am excited at the prospects of many hours of enjoyable flight ahead.
I have posted a few pictures at http://members.aol.com/tnfirestar2 of my trip to PA and of my gracious hosts. (Beauford, I was told to be sure and mention for you to visit and see an old friend of yours!)
Well its back to the task of working on the house, these weekends just dont seem
to be long enough for all the chores that have to be done!

Kolb group,
I want to welcome Mike Schnabel also, known as "Tenn Metfan" to the world of Kolb
ownership.
Mike is the new owner of Jesse and Mary Lib Saxions Firestar II and trailer.
He is a real Gentleman and I am glad to see Jesse's bird going to a good guy like
Mike.
I spent the day with Mike and Mary Lib today helping to prepare the plane and trailer
for the long trip back to TN and hopefully Mike is well on his way by now.
He plans to spend the winter going over the bird and also has to complete his hanger
and home before he is ready to commit aviation, it sounds like Mike has
a real nice new place nearly ready for him and his new aircraft.
Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in the aircraft and trailer and here
is hoping you all find the Kolb you are seeking, they really are fantastic aircraft.

Glad to hear he's OK...
My escapade with the cornfield Cuyuna engine out has been solved... Piston wrist
pin bearing began making metal and got the PTO piston and rings....I had the
pistons out for a decarbon about 35 hours ago ....I never took the cageless
bearing apart to look at it when I had it out.....Dumb ! Could have saved me
a lot of grief....Looks like I may need a new crank because of the contamination
which is very little....The problem is the middle crank and main rod bearing
that can not be changed...don't know if they got any metal but don't want to
gamble...any of you Cuyuna experts got any advice ? I don't know the availability
of a new crank but I understand that all the 2SI parts are interchangeable
with the UL202 except ignition parts. ....I think a new crank and bearings
are what is needed....I have the OEM pistons already so the Wiseco's are trash
anyway....I will call Roger at ZDE (Cuyuna parts ) in Indiana in the morning....
gotta go back to work welding a couple new tubes into the
Ultrastar right now....
