Isn't this the second engine stoppage and resultant crash on that Jabiru engine? Seems like the story said that they are run harder than normal, and not maintained for longevity because someone else picks up the replacement cost. Even after a rebuild some of the remaining parts are too worn to be a bargain. Some of the bearings and surfaces can not be replaced during a rebuild. Maybe someone with more knowledge can fill in the blanks here about what pieces can't be restored to like new condition during a rebuild. If you do choose to buy one, then make sure of the extent of the rebuild and maintenance done before you receive it. That can help you decide on what it is worth or not worth. MANY of them have been run too hot and the heads warp...not even good for a paperweight...yea you can true the mating surfaces and reinstall but the bolts won't hold torque anymore, and things just aren't "right"... All this is second hand information, never actually laid my eyes on one myself...but was passed on to me from someone knowledgable of the subject. I DO KNOW that the Predators were all upgraded to 914 engines, for the power/weight reasons mentioned earlier... First I have never flown one with faperons. Generally speaking you have more flap power (drag) with classic flaps than flaperons. I don't think there is any reduction in roll authority with flaperons but the Kolbs with flaporons have a shorter cord in the area were the ailerons are most effective. Most people that have a choice will choose to have the classic flaps. Maybe someone that has flown both will add their experience Rick Neilsen Redrive VW powered MKIIIc ----- Original Message ----- From: Subject: Kolb-List: Re: Mk111 questions? > --> Kolb-List message posted by: DCulver701@aol.com > > What are the differences in handling between a plane with flaperons and > the > classic,s flaps? You would then have a nice clean high lift area with no extra mechanisms, gap seals and other bothersome trivia. To each his own, but I like flying without a bunch of lever pulling, switch flipping, radio bullcrap, navigation aids, etc, etc. -just lovin' the air flowing past my ears. -BB, happy with what I have. Took notes on some the improvements/mods he has made. Hope to get started very soon on my plane. Hope to be flying again in a couple of months. Plan to build a website on new field, rebuild and mods. May help others in same situation. I'll be bugging the list and some of you individually for pointers and recommendations. Some of you have found the best methods through trial and error. Hope you won't mind if I skip the trial and error part and just steal your good ideas. Stay safe, make good decisions every flight. Welcome to whatever this is... You're gonna love it here... Handsome Kolb airplane you have there. I hope that over time you can learn to develop the same sort of deep and personal bond with your machine that I have come to enjoy with mine over these past few months... especially the Rotax part... Say, that looks like a 447 you have installed there on yours...utterly fascinating contrivance, the 447... Last thing I think of each night, the 447... I count them to get to sleep... in my little fantasy, they are flying around in a circle and I am tied to the ground spread-eagle, completely naked except for the VISA card clenched in my teeth. Each 447 that passes over me gets slightly lower than the one before, seeking to be the first to grab the VISA.. When one does, they all fly several more laps, taking care to bury me under great globs of Pennzoil Air Cooled oily carbon. After I'm totally slimed in the stuff, the one with the VISA breaks the circle and they all fly off in trail formation up the nearby hill into the gate of the Lockwood castle, which closes behind them as they enter... I'm usually about asleep at that point. But, I bore you with this 447 talk... I'm sure you'll come soon enough to explore each and every aspect of the many unique features if this remarkable powerplant. From your snapshots, looks like you have a nice open sandy area in which to get the feel of 2-stroking.... Perfect. just keep your speed up...
