Prop is quiet and is the best looking I have ever seen, we use the carbon one as it only weighs about 2.4lbs, and the service is excellent. They are listed at 1.5 amp and 12 volts, works great on the 17amp gel cell, not as well on the marine battery in my boat. I guess the more power a charger puts out the better, however they can get really expensive as you go bigger and more powerful. Performance also declines if you have a month of cloudy days in a row. I placed the battery in the nose cone to offset the weight of the VW. Originally the battery would last only one year. I thought it was because I was drawing too much juice from it and shortening its life. Three years ago I bought a battery maintainer (float type battery charger) and I plug it in after every flight. It has allowed the battery to live for three years so far. At Oshkosh this summer I even flooded the engine and it started the engine after quite a bit of cranking. I think my airplane sits too long between flights especially in the winter. The float charger seems to solve the battery life issue for me. For what it is worth, I ran a regular Gelcell like you buy at the battery store for years on my EZ. I ran a fairly small one because of the limited space in the nose. As I recall the advantage of the Gelcell is that due to a lower resistance than a lead/acid it can produce a higher current. The down side was that if you let it go dead and uncharged even for a day or so it would fail. It would easily turn over my Lycoming 0320-E2A even on a cold morning. (geared starter) Steve do not archive BTW, My Long-EZ just got back from a trip to Roatan. That's an Island just off the coast on Honduras. EP Dalton flew it Non-Stop from Key West. The trip included over 800 nm each way and transitioned 5 countries including Cuba. About 35 gals of fuel each way with about a 4.5 hr flight time. Average altitude was 12,500 ft. Not bad for a 21 year old aircraft built in some guy's garage. ________________________________ Message 21 ____________________________________ Time: 11:33:07 AM PST US From: "Silver Fern Microlights Ltd" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Jabiru Prop Choice --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Silver Fern Microlights Ltd" Woody, The prop you have is 63" dia 30"pitch. I found it on the web, and after talking to Rick Thomason went ahead and ordered it. He was great about checking up on me to see how it was working out.. I think most of these are actually used on Pulsars (tractors instead of pushers), where the cowling is a tight fit over the engine. I believe I was actually the first to use it on a pusher, but I have no regrets. I think John H.s analysis about its advantages is on the money. Okay, it does sound different than the Titan. If he was wearing a decent headset, he wouldnt notice : ) Not that I really needed it, but I believe Im getting a little more power than with the Titan system, as after installation, my max RPM went up a little and I had to adjust the prop pitch to take a slightly bigger bite. First, lead acid batteries can explode and do. Second, they give off a certain amount of acid vapor no matter what they claim about valving, porting, etc., and over a period of time you can have unseen corrosion on metal parts in the plane, even control cables in an enclosed area. The preferred battery usage in an enclosed area these days is a sealed jel cell. Just my personal thoughts and not to be taken as the last word or authority. Do not archive. I've used motorcycle batteries in the past (in motorcycles) and they only seemed to last a year. They were lead acid and I assume that I will need a sealed battery. The thought of being bathed in battery acid isn't appealing to me at all if it should spill. I would think a gel-cell or one of the newer type batteries would be better but which one? Suggestions? Thanks in advance! John Murr 1987 Firestar DO NOT ARCHIVE What size, make and model battery shouldI get for my recently purchased TNK starter?
