Bob,
This has to be a milestone event. By that I mean it is the equivalent to a
birth, death, graduation or a wedding. It is tough enough to get a plane to
fly well as it was originally designed with a prescribed engine and engine
mounting system. But to develop and mount an alternative engine raises the
difficulty bar to another order of magnitude.
At 112 hours I am still dinking around with the Victor 1+. It seems the
next change will make it run just a little bit better and to get it to
perform as well as the Simonini advertises. It is almost a disease, but my
short list is getting much shorter and hopefully it will disappear.
I cannot imagine the difficulty of building a new plane and developing and
mounting an alternate engine both at the same time as is Larry Bourne.
But it is fun to fly your own hand crafted plane.

All,
We have fitted VG's to both of our Xtra's there 98 in total per aircraft.
We have found that the pre stall buffet is much more noticeable , the low
speed handling is much better, T/O and landing distances reduced, the stall
is not much different except much slower but as it occurs from a higher
angle of attack it looks different.
The PFA & CAA were so impressed they approved then on all Kolbs in the UK.
Regards
Mike

Mine didn't pick up any bad tendencies either. Just a lower stall
speed. A lot more control a just above stall. I used the little lexan
"Landshorter" ones - about 42 + per wing, used the pattern they
sent for the layout. They're even hard to see unless you look close.
It takes two of these to make one of the homemade ones.

Rex,
They are 3" pitch spacing placed at 10% of chord, the 3" pitch pairs are
placed between each rib in the 'valley'.
total weight is 98gms.

Gang,
I got to wondering if perhaps I didn't hold mine in the stall long enough
and perhaps if I did hold it longer then it would do something nasty. So I
decided to go up today and test it really well. Some of you may remember
that I have to fly out under a power line (residence line with a cable
hookup that brings it down even more.) We had a fire on the mountain a bit
earlier in the year and the guys at the ranch drug every thing mobile into
the field that I use and cut a fire line around it. The guy drug it a bit
smoother with a plank and knocked out most of the humps. (I didn't walk it,
DUH!) I fire off down the runway and hit a dip that catapulted me into the
air sooner than I wanted, but I was able to fly it back down close to the
ground. Got about 1000 feet under me and cut back to 4400 and started
pulling the nose up. Found that I had made a mistake, it stalled at 28 MPH.
I held it back and nothing dropped except the nose. Did it several more
times just to make sure of the speed and the drop, (using the rudder of
course to keep the wings level ) and found that even in a hard stall there
was not much drop before it was flying again.
Now for the interesting part! I have been flying out of that field for at
least three years and have made very few of what I would call great
landings. I usually have a tail wind, its rough except for the part just
under the power lines. Trees too tall to go around again and other things
that seem to conspire against an over active mind, but they are generally
quite safe, if not pretty. When we are out at the Alvord or on a regular
runway, I generally do wheel landings because it is easier. Should have done
a few stall type ones! Out of habit I approached the strip in the same
manner as I had always done and found that the plane instead of dropping on
the runway too soon, was floating. I pulled the throttle off, shoved it down
towards the runway again and started to flare- back up again to about 4 feet
above the runway showing no sign at all that it wants to quit flying. At
this point I knew that I needed to go around, but knew that I would only be
stuck in a Ponderosa about 50 feet up if I tried it. In those situations
time seems to freeze, but it is just your mind running amuck. I remember at
that point that I grabbed the brakes. Mind you my wheels are at least four
feet off the ground. I let go of the brakes and shoved the stick down and
when the wheels touched, then I applied the breaks - hard! Of course the
tail comes up and my nose cone is just barely off the ground. Let off the
brakes enough for the elevator to drop the tail, hit left rudder and left
brake and skidded around in a circle tight enough to miss my trailer and
come to a stop. Not a ding anywhere on the plane, no dust on the nose cone.
( we won't discuss the condition of my shorts) That particular landing from
touch down to stopping was less than 150 feet.
I am only using 27 VG's total on the wings. Of course they are the home made
ones with Shack's pattern. The first set are with the back at 11 inches
measured over the curve, the second set is set with the back even with the
front of the first set. There are five of them in the false ribs on each
wing. Before this second set was added I had to hold 4400 to 4600 RPMs to
keep it flying, then cut power and it would drop on the ground. Going to
have to rethink that.
