--> Kolb-List message posted by: russ kinne <kinnepix@earthlink.net> Does anyone know the answer? Of course no Kolb pilot would ever fly under a bridge -(tho it sure is fun) -- but if on floats, on takeoff, you see you're not going to make it over the bridge safely, only safe-and-sane thing to do is to fly under the bridge. Is this legal in view of the 500' clearance exemption "during takeoff and landing"? I would think so, but what does the Friendly say? Perhaps "land and water-taxi under the bridge" -- but this isn't always possible. Russ Kinne Do Not Archive

It is always best to check the FARs but during my training we were not restricted from close proximity to boats, docks, bridges while on Step Taxi or Approach and departure. They did stress using common sense. In other words, You CAN overfly a house at 10 feet on approach to land, but you MIGHT have to deal with the complaint whether valid or not. In either case though a seaplane must yield to all water vessels whether powered or not. I think I will pull out my Training Book and brush up. Steve B FireFlys on Floats do not archive

The plane had once belonged to Capt Ladd.(no connection) who ran an organisation of float planes and amphibs, charters, fishing, sightseeing etc. `A shower of spray and we`re away` was their slogan. One of their pilots, in that plane, had done just as you suggest. He had carried out a prolonged take off run which resulted in him flying under the Auckland Harbour Bridge . That was his defence and he stuck to it./ I think the guy got away with a severe dressing down. Incidentally a few years ago the Japanese were engaged to widen the Auckland Bridge by addding a road to carry an extra lane of traffic on either side. What did the Kiwi`s call it? The Nippon clip on. Incidentally Russ, one of my most treasured memories is ghosting up through Auckland harbour after a days sailing out to Kowhai island with just enough breeze to fill the spinaker with the lights of Auckland all around.Nosing into the mooring and having a cold beer while the Southern Cross shines overhead. Sheer Magic. Pat do not archive --
