Hi,
This report on the Rocket list reminded me of the time when the US was doing its
best to protect its own turf by denigrating the Concorde in any it could.
The Concorde team had reported that they had tested the engines for birdstrikes
by throwing chickens into the engine intakes. The US said that they had conducted
the same tests and had smashed up the engines.
It was a while before the penny dropped and it was gently pointed out that they
should not have been using FROZEN chickens.
Cheers
Pat

Hey Big Lar / Guys,
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Hard to picture the weather you and Mike are talking about. The long, hot
summer is finally over - I think - and temps are in the 80's during the day.
Sure is nice. Oh, man, is it nice.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
At 7:00 this morning I looked at the outside thermometer and it read 30 degrees.....
It wouldn't be raining.......it would be snowing..... But it's not to cold for
things other than an Open Cockpit....
Your not going to see many motorcycles either....
Hey Big Lar , at 80 degrees.....all you have to do is climb to 25,000 ft to see
how cold it is here...
The WALL of Winter aproaches.........BRrrrrrr.

It is interesting how these stories get twisted. The way the story goes on
this side of the pond is:
When the British were testing the concord they borrowed the bird launching
cannon from the US to test the windshield. When fired at the wind shield it
not only went thru the wind shield but thru the bulkhead at the back of the
cockpit. The US pointed out that bird should be thawed before the test.

I, for one, felt embarrassed at the time by the pinheads in our govt
bureaucracy who were giving concord a hard time. A simple case
of dog-in-the-manger, techno jealousy.

And this is Kolb-related how...?
Nice try, Pat, but this is a piece of urban legend from way back. Why would
the U.S. be testing an engine they weren't using? Our 'rooster boosters',
as they're called, have been used in certification for decades and have
yielded much useful info.
Try not to get drawn into those conspiracy chat rooms.

Hey Mike, what kind of Minnesotan are you? It's 43 now and it's going to warm to
46 with light winds. Your wings are built (so you don't have to build them on
the way down), and you gotta fly, so all you have to do is dress up.
Wait until the lakes freeze up. That's when the real flying begins, and you want
to put that new plane away for the winter? Remember, we have our annual club
fly-in on Cooks Bay of Lake Minnetonka Saturday Feb 11th, 2006. See you there

I live in Michigan and the weather just got nice around here. Now I did plan
ahead and made my MKIIIc fully enclosed but don't they have jackets in
Minnesota?
In the days that I flew a Weedhopper and sat fully exposed behind the prop I
would bundle up in a snowmobile suit and fly it on skis all winter. Now that
I'm a old fart I spend part of the winter in Florida
It also seems like there are many in the south that fly and even work on
their airplanes when it gets warm. Maybe planes with animal names like
Bulwinkle or what ever it is, get extra hot.

Hey Ralph,
You got the wrong guy......I'm being held "Hostage" here in MN.....I'm
a California boy
( Born in Oakland - "Go Raiders" )
I know that after winter has frozen my butt off for a few months.....30 degrees
seems warm......
As far as Trailering my plane ANYWHERE during winter.....forget it , I don't want
to get Salt & Sand all over it and in it.
I don't have a enclosed trailer , I have to get rid of my Powered Parachute &
Trailer before I consider getting
one.....I don't have room for two trailers...
Like I said....Stanton has Pipers to "rent" during Winter, That'll keep me sharp.
Gotta Fly...

This "thing" has been around since 1972, and has a smattering of
truth, although the objects hit by the bird, as well as the
cannoneers vary.
.
See: http://www.snopes.com/science/cannon/htm
Snopes is a great urban legend debunker source...should be bookmarked
and used before widely disseminating urban legends.

Hey Kolbers,
Just got home from Ronnie's Smith's annual October fly in. Present were John Hauck,
James Tripp and Ted Cowan. Great day! John Cooley was at work but spoke with
his wife via telephone. Thanks to James Tripp for letting little Charley sit
in your Kolb... He talked about it all the way home. Attendance was down from
last year but Kolb aircraft were out in force and looking good! Ted's wife
provided little Charley with a chocolate chip cookie that made his day as well.
Be sure and thank her for that Ted.
One can't sit around a few of the likes of John Hawk or Michael Highsmith for very
long without learning something so I thought I may pass this note along from
the Kolb camp. Michael Highsmith brought up an interesting point concerning
the EIS that many of us use or are planning to use. And I noticed a post of this
topic on today's list of e-mail traffic.
Michael (great guy) said "We have had in our club alone 7 engine outs (can't remember
the time frame) and not one was detected by the EIS in terms of EGT" Please
don't quote me on that but you get the jest as to why I paid attention.
He further explained why. The EIS lags the actual readings of the EGT's by 30 seconds
to 1 minute. He also added that the problem is not the EIS unit it's self
but the probes that send the EIS this info. Interesting? I think so. John
Hawk added (In true "Hawk" fashion) "you can add all the bells and whistles you
want to.. I like my gauges..." Old geezer HA gotta love that guy!
My question is this... If this is true can it be fixed? Is there better probes
or sensors out there?
BTW all 7 were two cycle rotax engines.
Also the talk of 2 cycle engines being taken off the market for any type of motor
sports (for sale that is) by 2008. Hmmm is Rotax going to step up to the plate
an offer a 2 cyl four cycle engine in the 60-70 hp range?
Anyway just wanted to report in and say hi... back to the shop to work on MS Dixie
gang.. Take Care...

Hey Guys,
I had "shortened" the travel on my aileron control horn.....mostly
because I've heard people on
the "list" did it to "lighten" the controls......
Sometimes , while I was flying in winds 5-10 , I would have to correct a gust
with "FULL" right or left.....
My controls feel "Light enough" that I moved the aileron rod "Back" to the "stock"
position on the control horn.
After I moved it my "Wing Fold Bracket" had to be changed ( just the Top part
).....I know there's been a few
people interested in this area......So , here's some pictures of the New Transport
Bracket....
http://www.wingsforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3002
The top bracket keeps the wings from hitting the aircraft.....the bottom bracket
keeps the wings from flopping
outward while transporting it on my open trailer....

In a clip from Flying Tales... the following is noted:
In 1933 it was proposed to have an Amateur pilots license, about
midway between Student and Private. Sound familiar? An ad for Bader
Field (Atlantic City) touted the Hotel Chelsea at $28/wk including
meals. Not quite the same, except the hotel is gone as well as the
prices. Cowl flaps were the latest thing in 1934.
