Remember, it takes a college degree to fly a plane, but only a high school diploma to fix one. (Reassurance for those of us who fly routinely in their jobs) After every flight, Qantas pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet," which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some actual maintenance complaints submitted by Qantas' pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by Maintenance engineers. By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never had an accident. P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement. S: Almost replaced left inside main tire. P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough. S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft. P: Something loose in cockpit. S: Something tightened in cockpit. P: Dead bugs on windshield. S: Live bugs on back-order. P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent. S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.. P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear. S: Evidence removed. P: DME volume unbelievably loud. S: DME volume set to more believable level. P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick. S:That's what they're for. P: IFF inoperative. S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode. P: Suspected crack in windshield. S: Suspect you're right. P: Number 3 engine missing. S: Engine found on right wing after brief search. P: Aircraft handles funny. S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious. P: Target radar hums. S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics. P: Mouse in cockpit. S: Cat installed. And the best one for last.................. P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding something with a hammer. S: Took hammer away from midget. ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 06:17:37 AM PST US From: "Larry Bourne" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Sensor --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Larry Bourne" Yah, I'm up early, too, and hating the thought of super early sunsets all winter. But not before this morning's excursion to the last local flyin breakfast. I knew it would be breezy and the trip sure was a busy one. I touched down gently on the airport's (shudder) paved runway, taxied gallantly to the parking lot where the FAA guy who inspected my plane for airworthiness helped me tie down. Glad the ropes were substantial. After wolfing down the usual cold vittles and talking to a Firestar owner who parks his plane there, I figured I better get going while it was only treacherous. I had a good audience and didn't want to disappoint them. Headwind? hoo boy! Full throttle and UPPPP. -followed by DOWN, fortunately just skimming the tires on the ground before whizzing back up again. After a roller coaster departure and a quick ascent to pattern alt, a downwind turn to mach I groundspeed. Home in the blink of an eye, 70 mph to touchdown (slow rollout) My brother helped me fold the wings and stuff it in the shed. When this little breeze quiets down I'll haul it down to the shop. All in all a good season, no bumps, no bends. A few more mods to go. -BB do not archive ________________________________ Message 13 ____________________________________ Time: 11:40:47 AM PST US From: "woody" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: aviation prints --> Kolb-List message posted by: "woody" Maybe a kiind soul in the vicinity could pick up a book for you ----- Original Message ----- From: "pat ladd" Subject: Kolb-List: aviation prints > --> Kolb-List message posted by: "pat ladd" > > Hi Listers, > > Because I collect signed aviation prints I have been sent the blurb reprinted below. > It struck me that there may be some listees in the vicinity in California who are interested in aviation art > So for your information, here it is. > > Cheers > > Pat > > Robert Taylor Signing Tuesday 1st November > > CAF Museum, 455 Aviation Drive, Camarillo Airport, California. > > To help launch his new book Air Combat Paintings Volume V, the world's foremost aviation artist, Robert Taylor will be joining us at the CAF hangar in Camarillo between 2 and 7pm for an exhibition of his work. Run it at 40:1, I used Klotz synthetic from snowmobile catalogue. Jet it to run 1050 full throttle, & 1150 cruise. Watch out for 7/8 throttle position, as it often gets real lean there. Make sure you go thru the trouble of removing the engine after 20 hours & retorque the base bolts or you will end up with a leak. -Richard Swiderski -----Original Message----- From: owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Mitty Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Cuyuna II-02 Motor --> Kolb-List message posted by: Mitty I have no info on engine,Warren, but sure would love some pictures... I have thought about flying in the winter, but I hate to mess with my carbs, since I have them dialed in for summer temps. Lanny Fetterman F.S. II 598 P.S. The EAA suggested that I get a student pilot license. N-number my airplane, and then take the practical test to get my sport pilot rating. So I made an appointment at the local FSDO to get the student license.
