I have a question about your 1000' ROC at 55 mph with 5800rpm. Are you climbing with your throttle wide open? With mine I'm getting 6200 - 6400 rpm on climb out with WOT. I climb out with all the throttle I have to take advantage of all the cooling of the main jet has to offer. WHAT GOOD IS THE ARCHIVE IF THE PEOPLE WITH THE QUESTIONS ARE DRIVEN AWAY? Using the option of not archiving is completely voluntary for each individual but is a totally unnecessary. A good search engine can deal with all the drivel you will ever write. YOU can not control what others write but you can make them feel unwelcome on the Kolb list whenever you try. Has been for as long as I can remember. Local to the Atlanta area though, the Corp used to allow seaplane activity on Lake Alatoona, on a limited basis. Not sure if it still does. It went something like this: During the summer months from Memorial Day to Labor Day -- Monday through Friday during daylight hours, No weekends. During the Fall, Winter and Spring months -- 7 days a week during daylight hours. I don't know why they didin't have similar rules for Lake Lanier since it's so much larger. I guess the boat traffic was the problem. I once landed a single seat amphibious Buccaneer UL on Lanier during an emergency landing. The single banger, Rotax 277, shook so much on it's soft rubber mounts, that it vibrated the carburetor out of the rubber mounting flange and of course the engine quit. I had just been doing some low altitude "cruising" out over the lake when it happened. I had taken off about 20 miles away from the lake and shortly after arriving over the water, it got quiet. I was quite a ways out in the lake with no way to reach the engine from the cockpit (The engine was mounted on top of the wing). The hull started taking on water from the waves of boats and jetskis. Things were looking grim. The carb was "dangling" from the throttle cable but not in the lake. A fisherman stopped by and let me stand on the front of his bassboat while using a butter knife out of his tacklebox as a screwdriver, to tighten the carb back on. Cranked it back up and since it was almost sunset, I flew over to the beachside of Lake Lanier Islands. Taxied up on the beach and tied down for the night. Next morning flew it back home. Changed the engine out to a 447 the next week. Another one of those, "I learned about flying from that" type of stories.......... As Murphy would have it, he was at the end of a low pass over the runway at the time. Anything else but a Kolb would probably not have made it over the trees at the end of the runway. (He couldn't reach the ignition switch to shut it off; he will be relocating the switch.) (He might give himself a little more leeway next time too----.) The problem was in the splitter. It's a three into one on an oil injected 503DC. The single throttle cable that enters the bottom of the splitter was prevented from being centered in the brass plug (inside the splitter) because the slot in the brass was not wide enough (at the bottom of the slot) for the cable to fit more than 1/2 way into it. The resulting sideways pull on the brass plug eventually scored the soft aluminum barrel, and finally built up enough of an aluminum ridge to freeze the unit solid. The splitter was bought about 5 years ago. I have the same engine setup on my Flightstar, and it's also around 5 years old. We found the same problem in mine, only not yet scored enough to seize.
