For me in Arizona, it is the opposite. I was away from my plane, traveling, during the summer. My flying season is just getting started. It actually started last month, with my first flight after the summer. But with 100 hours since my last de-carbon, I decided not to fly again until I got that chore over with. So, yesterday was my second flight of the season, and it reminded me of the first motorcycle ride in spring, after a long winter up north. Everything about the flight seemed to be more enjoyable. When I taxied in and shut down the engine, I sat there for a minute and contemplated: Can there be a better toy in the world then a homebuilt airplane? I had 100 hours since my last de-carbon. I have never been able to get a good feeling from checking through the exhaust port, and this time was no exception, so I took the engine off and pulled the heads and cylinders. I found one oil ring stuck on an end and the other oil ring had a 3/8" piece broke off the end. I have no idea what caused the ring to break or how long it had been that way, but I was glad that I decided to do a complete check. As far as the stuck ring goes, is this normal after only 100 hours? After my last de-carbon, I switched to oil injection and Pennsoil air cooled. Also, I try to keep the rpm's and temps up to avoid carbon. All I can think of is that maybe I didn't remove enough carbon from the ring lands last time. I used to use Amsoil and the carbon from that oil is really hard. I always feel better about flying after I have seen the pistons and cylinders. Carbon may be a concern for me but wear isn't. The rings and cylinders measured well within new specs after 200 hours. Looks like the MKIII is very much repairable. I know what it feels like to lose a MKIII, a brand new one. For that matter, I know what it feels like to lose an Ultrastar and a Firestar. It hurts! Was tough to get started on the rebuild of an airplane that had just been built. Finally got started about 6 months after the loss. Rebuilt the MKIII in 1992 and 1993. Must have worked. It is still flying! Good luck on your repair of the MKIII. john h DO NOT ARCHIVE ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 05:59:09 PM PST US From: Matt Dralle Subject: Kolb-List: What We Are Thankful For... --> Kolb-List message posted by: Matt Dralle Dear Listers, In the United States, Thursday is our National day of Thanksgiving. Many of us will be traveling to be with our families and friends and share in generous feasts of plenty. Many have expressed over the last couple of weeks how thankful they are for the Aviation Lists here on the Matronics servers and for all of the assistance and comradery they have experienced being a part of the Lists. I think one of my favorite comments is when someone says something like, "Its the first thing I do in the morning while I'm having my morning coffee!". That's a wonderful tribute to the purpose and function of these Lists. Its always great to hear I'm not the only one that jumps out of bed each morning to check my List email!! I'm not sure why, but the number of Contributions have been a little low this year compared to years past. Hopefully people are just waiting until the last minute to make their List Support Contribution this year. Won't you take a minute today and show your appreciation for these Lists and for their continued operation and upgrade? Don't make me beg... :-) lol The List Contribution Site is: http://www.matronics.com/contribution Thanks to everyone that already made their Contribution! I have had my left wing to lift off twice at about 40 mph. Is this normal for a Kolb that is adjusted properly? Is this a result of the prop blast on the tail surface? It smells a little like mineral spirits, and dissolves almost everything except Polytone. It's recommended between coats when you're painting. For regular washing I use car wash concentrate, whatever's on sale. Do not archive > --> Kolb-List message posted by: DAquaNut@aol.com > > List, > > I checked the archives and found nothing. Sounds about right to me...and I'll tell ya pard...keep practicing those fast taxis and you are gonna bend something...that FireFly was meant to fly...not drive! You will see just what I mean as soon as you get the nerve to pull back on the stick... Now that ya know it will run 40mph...if you have some more throttle...let her have it! Remember...there is very little in the air that will bend your airplane....and a whole lot below the air that will. The Flight characteristics of a FireFly are 10 times better than it ground handling Good Luck....you are about to get that big ole Kolb grin.... I'm reading off the label of a can of C-2210 as I sit here, and the contents are labeled as: Toluene, Acetone. It cleaned heavy oil deposits off Vamoose almost instantly, and did no harm. Jim and Dondi supplied it. Lar.
