Just inquire for the proper epoxy, not at WalMart !!! > UltraStar .. Tenn > David, A few months ago I had the chance to inspect the fuel tanks on Long_EZ N27SB. They have had constant exposure to AVGAS for over 22 years. The surface on the inside was still hard and crisp. These tanks were built using the original Safe-T-Poxy supplied by Aircraft Spruce. This material was also used for car gas tanks. I do not know if the new "Safer" Safe-T-Poxy will work. You are right that some car gas will destroy the epoxy matrix in some epoxy formulas. In the case of the Long-EZ this would be catastrophic because the rear wall of the tank is also the main spar. I would check with someone like Bever at AirTech. The spar riding tanks that they use for the Quicksilver are Glass. I have been wanting to build a new tank for FF#007 so If I research the material I will post it. If anyone else knows, Lend a hand. BTW, The real problem with tank degradation is not a mushy tank. The engine will usually quit long before the tank falls apart because the dissolved chemicals will create a gum or plate the components of your fuel system. Steve FF#007

This company carries many designs & sizes of fuel cells and tanks. I cut and installed my vent, fill, guage, and outlet openings to suit my needs. I did need to cut 2 fuslage tubings to install the tank and sleeved, drilled, and bolted them back in place. fly safe Bob Griffin

Here is Airnav's info page on MV: http://www.airnav.com/airport/UT25 Take a look at the photo of the airstrip. Looks pretty intimidating on your first approach with that 800 foot rock wall in front of you. However, note that the 4,000 strip is dirt with a short paved section at the south end. If there is no traffic on the ground, the Kolbs can land on the paved strip. The strip is low in the middle and has a nice rise to it to the south. Right center of the photo is the service station, snack bar, and convenience store. Directly above the service station at up on the foot of the mesa is the lodge, resturant, trading post museum, and gift shop. Take care, john h do not archive

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm *pretty* sure that most standard senders are sending analog signals. So, to get them into any kind of digital device -- like a Pam or laptop -- you'd have to have an analog-to-digital interface. If you build a glass "structure," when ordering cloth, foam and epoxy, get small amounts of glass beads and flox. This material is mixed with the epoxy for special points and applications. Easy to use but one probably should read up on building glass structures or get a friend to give you a quick course. I believe Aircraft Spruce has for sale easy to read booklets on the subject. Really easy to master and satisfying when the piece is finished. UltraStar ... Tenn Do not archive --------------------------------- Photo Books. You design it and well bind it!

It has approx 180 hours on the airframe and engine, BRS, EIS, ICOM A22, brakes, strobe, very strong 447, new tires, new fuel lines, new gap seal, and a few extras. Extremely well built and a blast to fly. I'm asking $9500 for the plane. When I get a chance, I will post some pics. Email me if you have any questions. Best Regards, Guy Morgan

    Subject: tach signal
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "boyd" <by0ung@brigham.net> George, Unless I am reading the schematic wrong, the tach signal is tapped off the input signal and that is what confuses me a bit. Why can I get a good signal from one rectifier but not another? Evidently, the signal to a Key West gets saturated (no cycles) at times resulting in some funky readouts. Inquiring minds want to know. Larry Tasker -------------------------- It seems to me that a digital tach is a signal counter. thus it must see some type of change in voltage level inorder to count the rpms. one possibility that could cause the tach not to work on the lighting coil is that the voltage change is not high enough. In ham radio my signal counter has a variable input trigger level... that makes it helpful in testing different types of signals.. If the tack has a signal trigger level of say 20 volts and the lighting coil is only showing 17. it may or may not count correctly.. An other possibility. could be the range.. Some lighting coils could produce 2, 3, 6, or more pulses per revolution which would give an invalid reading, or go beyond the limits of the counter, (tach) . So if we know the signal level and the output of the device we are trying to count we could then determine if the system should or should not work. As for why one rectifier would work and another would not may depend on weather it is a full or half wave rectifier. Guys I am grasping at straws on this one.. But if the rectifier has a lower level of resistance.. It may pull the trigger voltage down to below the level required by the tach. Do not archive boyd ps just read snuffy's post and we have said the same thing but he used fewer words. The output of a rectifier alone is a pulsing DC signal. When capacitors and other types of filters are added it becomes a smooth dc signal. Frequency and amplitude are the main concerns when feeding it into a tach.

If there is auto gas safe expoxy, make sure you do your research and buy the right stuff. I remember reading about an experimental airplane with built in wing tanks, they ususally used Avgas which was fine, but when they used auto gas it started eating away the epoxy, and the foam inside the wing etc. They took off and before they departed the airport area the wing broke off and killed them.. I've been using mine on my boat, (! ! !....Robert :-) hooked to my VHF radio to give lat/long readouts on the VHF's panel. Mostly for gee-whiz, but there's a faint possibility that it may come in handy some day. Now, if only the fishfinder could talk/listen to it. Lar. Do not Archive. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "Larry Bourne" <biglar@gogittum.com> I just gotta rub it in a bit, ol' buddy. This is the weather I paid the dues for last summer, here in Furnace Springs. I just got back from 2 days on the Colorado River, where I ran the boat from Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mojave up to the base of Hoover Dam - 38 miles each way. Beautiful trip - after I get thru editing over 150 pictures, I'll send ya some. It was sunny and fairly warm there, with quite cool evenings. I'd guess 35 low and 70 high. Gitcher self out here and wallow in it a bit. We can rent a plane this time and go exploring. Hadta do something........tried to fire Vamoose up last weekend, and found that the fuel pumps were dead. No idea why. Last time I ran it, only to find that persistent oil leak in the redrive, the pumps were brand new and both worked fine with regulated pressure at 45 psi. Now, after sitting for a few months, both of them show "open circuit" on an ohmeter. Called the dealer, and they said the warranty is expired. I think it was just 30 days. Called Walbro, the mfr., and the engineer I talked to said he's real interested, and would love it if I'd send him one or both.........but won't replace them. Soooo.........new pumps are ordered, and will be here next week. Over $200.00 worth. Sigh. Lar. Do not Archive. If not, wewill tent camp down in the tent camp area. Soon as we confirm this, then the other folks that are coming in with RVs will know where themajority of the tent campers and folks that fly in are going to be.We like to get as many of the attendees as possible camping as closetogether as possible. Part of the Kolb family thing at MV, ya know.3-John W, Gary H, and I are planning on stopping off at Moab again. We camped out on the tarmac for three days last year with Jim Hefner. We would like to know if anyone else is interested in camping with usfor a few days. This will give those that may be driving to Alvord achance! to make some road miles while the "birdmen" do a little flyingand messing around the Moab area.4-If Larry and Karen C drive down to MV, we need to know when toexpect them back at Alvord so we can establish dates for thatflyin/campout. We had a blast up there last year.Anything else we need to do prior to the MV 2006 Unplanned/UnorganizedKolb Flyin, let us know.Take care,John h and John WDO NOT ARCHIVE

If you guys are stopping at Moab we will have plenty of time to get back. Where is this alternate camping spot. I think we will be tent camping this year rather than buying all that diesel for the BAMH. Actually I didn't care for the exaggerated rocking motion caused by the Motorhome that seemed to be multiplied in the plane trailer. Larry

There is a designated tent camping area in the RV park down the hill (inside the RV Park) at the far end. Probably the east or SE end. If Jim Hefner brings his Kolb trailer, we will camp up across the road at the entrance from the bath house and camp store. I believe the year you all were there we tented down in the normal tent camping area. Does that make sense??? I hope so.............. john h DO NOT ARCHIVE

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Larry Bourne" <biglar@gogittum.com> You said it right, Ray. It's easy to master - with a little help - and very satisfying when done. There are many fillers to use for different purposes, and each has its' place. System Three resins in WA state has excellent articles and video tapes available, too, as does West System Epoxies in (I think) MI. I dealt with System 3 extensively when working on boats in WA, and found them to be very helpful. Good Folks. I'm also *quite* sure there are epoxy formulations to handle almost any fuels and additives you might find anywhere. Once again, research is the key. Lar. Do not Archive.
