--> Kolb-List message posted by: Robert Laird <rlaird@cavediver.com> The term, I believe, is "congested area" and, as far as I know, the FAA never defines what that means. The yellow parts of a sectional, from what I understand, are the light patterns you're likely to see at night. And light patterns don't necessarily mean congested, so we're stuck not really knowing what the FAA means. This, I've been lead to believe, is by design so that they have the latitude to decide on a case-by-case basis if you did anything wrong, in their eyes. This reminds me of that old joke about, during your PPL training, practicing emergency landings at night. The instructor says, as you get closer to the ground, turn on your landing lights so you can see what you're about to land on... if you don't like what you see, then turn the lights off. :-) -- Robert On 1/26/06, David Key <dhkey@msn.com> wrote: > --> Kolb-List message posted by: "David Key" <dhkey@msn.com> > > Negative is you can not fly over densely popluated areas, the yellow part on > a sectional. --> Kolb-List message posted by: Thom Riddle <jtriddle@adelphia.net> Kolbers, "... allow you to annually inspect an Experimental-LSA or Special LSA that you own...." This did not sound quite right to me so I asked EAA's Joe Norris and got his response which confirms my suspicion that the Inspection rating is good only for E-LSAs owned by the certificate holder, not S-LSAs owned by the certificate holder. S-LSAs require the as yet non-existent Maintenance rating or A&P ticket. See Joe's response below: Thom in Buffalo Hello Thom, The LSA Repairman certificate with an inspection rating does not allow the holder to perform condition inspections on aircraft certificated in the Light-Sport Aircraft category (commonly called "Special LSA"). The inspection rating will only allow the holder to perform condition inspections on experimental LSA that he or she owns and that are listed on the certificate. The regulatory citation is 14 CFR 65.107(b), which states: (b) The holder of a repairman certificate (light-sport aircraft) with an inspection rating may perform the annual condition inspection on a light-sport aircraft: (1) That is owned by the holder; (2) That has been issued an experimental certificate for operating a light-sport aircraft under =A721.191(i) of this chapter; and (3) That is in the same class of light-sport-aircraft for which the holder has completed the training specified in paragraph (a)(2)(ii) of this section. This regulation clearly states, in item (b)(2), that the aircraft must hold an airworthiness certificate issued under =A721.191(i), which is the experimental certificate. Light-sport aircraft category (aka "special light-sport") are issued under =A721.190, so the repairman certificate with inspection rating won't apply to those aircraft. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have further questions. Joe Norris EAA Aviation Services EAA Aviation Center, Oshkosh, WI 888-322-4636, extension 6806 jnorris@eaa.org

I will try to later post a short video clip of Boyd landing at MV which is really cool! Thanks guy's! Bob Dalton ================ Bob, Your Welcome..... I don't know how large the video file will be but it is quit good..... I remember when you showed it on your laptop while still at mv.. there was a good discussion on when the mains hit the ground... it was so smooth that there was no jump in the camera... they should all be like that. I will have plenty of padding under the wings between the wings and floor. I will have the plane facing forward. I have already made steel chock blocks for the main gear. Are their any suggestions for hauling on an open bed trailer. I will be hauling it 1500 miles. Thanks for the help from ya'll, it may just be what keeps me from making another mistake. Rick, After looking at the headphone adapter I think I have figured out to set up to hear in coming messages. Now I want to be able to transmit. I dont quite have that one figured out. I see how to hook up a remote push to talk switch, but I dont know where to start to find an external microphone that would work over the noise of the rotax. Are you able to transmit with your set up? I have the Icom IC-A5 handheld if that helps you any. I guess if all else fails I could get one of those headsets like John H has Ed Diebel (447 Firefly).

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Guy Morgan" <morganguy@hotmail.com> I hauled my Firefly on an open trailer about 400 miles. We built a simple stand, out of 2X4's, that the tailboom and wings rested on. Be sure to support the tailboom. Do not let it ride on the tailwheel. If you're trailering with the prop attached, be sure to secure it. When I got home I noticed my 2-blade prop had cut about a 4" slit in the underside of each wing from the wind moving it side to side. Pad your tailfeathers well, also. We used some industrial sized/strength Saran wrap around the cockpit/fuselage area to minimize wind in that area. Just wrap the whole thing several times. It worked very well. Kept the water out, too as it rained part of the way home. Hope this helps Guy Morgan Galveston, TX based Firefly P.S. It's still For Sale. Email me for pics and info. Are their any suggestions for hauling on an open bed trailer. I will be hauling it 1500 miles. Thanks for the help from ya'll, it may just be what keeps me from making another mistake.

You do want to support the boom, lessens the bending moment from, and damage to, the tailwheel assembly. Of course, tie everything down well and check frequently. It's a looong over-the-water approach if you come straight in from Volks. BTW, I live right down the road from Volks, on Fairwood Rd. Lemme know when you're gonna be there. I'd love to see your plane. How'd you get in there anyway? I talked to Dave and he said there was a waiting list. Scholes is free for me, but there's alot of traffic and it's windy. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "kfackler" <kfackler@ameritech.net> I'm an instructional systems designer for a division of EDS called Learning Solutions. We design and develop training for other companies. The joke used to be "have flipchart, will travel" but most of what we do today is web-based training. So, yes, I'm both a desk jockey and a computer geek. I've been in the human performance business for nearly 20 years, but it's a second career. Before that, I was in the retail produce business, having my own store, Ken's Greengrocer, back in Dallas. I do website design and development for small and home-based business as a sideline. I'm divorced, but in a long, steady relationship with a wonderful woman who supports my desire to fly. I have one child, a 22 year old daughter named Jennifer of whom I'm as proud as can be. I'll be 49 next month and have been flying since 1982. I've flown 15 ultralights, having started out in the weight-shift Eagle. I've also flown five different types of GA airplanes and one glider. However, I've only owned three aircraft, all ultralights. The others were either rented or loaners. In all that time, I've had some precautionary landings, but only two unintended engine-out situations: one due to running out of fuel and one due to throwing a rod. I'm politically conservative and theologically liberal. I'm chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf. -Ken Fackler Kolb Mark II / A722KWF Rochester MI

I have a laptop with a larger hi-definition monitor plugged into it for home use, and play videos that people send me almost every day. This one didn't want to show on the external monitor, and a minute ago in desperation I tried dragging it over to the laptop screen, and.......wall-la........video. Strange how that worked out. Yah, they *almost* made it. Too bad, but at least they didn't land in the spectator area. Lar. Do not Archive. Larry Bourne Palm Springs, CA Building Kolb Mk III N78LB Vamoose www.gogittum.com

Here's a little of mine: Went from teaching Scuba Diving in L.A. to driving a Kenworth logging truck in WA state, then logging (falling timber) in Idaho. 20 years ago got into refrigeration/air conditioning/restaurant appliance service and was self employed for 12 years. For 9 years now have been an engineer at a Palm Springs luxury hotel and was recently promoted to Chief Engineer. Also, for 9 years, have been dabbling at building a Kolb Mk III and frustrating all those waiting to see an end to the B.S. and wondering if it'll ever fly. :-) Lar. Do not Archive. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "TNFirestar2" <tnfirestar2@yahoo.com> OK, I do like this threads concept, so heres my humble introduction... Kolb fan since I first watched them fly at Sun'n'Fun / Oshkosh 1994. Been back to Oshkosh every year since, have watched many different planes fly as I dreamed of which one would some day be mine to enjoy and after all those years, the first impression still stands as the best! No finer light plane found yet that can beat a Kolb! So, after 11 years of dreaming, I was lucky enough to find the right bird (Firestar 2), with the irreplaceable help from this very group (thanks Denny!!)... and awaiting the spring for my first flights. Occupation wise, began working during High School in restaurants, most famously for being the kid that worked at the Playboy resort in northern NJ... once I became an adult, worked in the auto collision repair field for 5 years, that led to a job building cars at the factory, when the Nissan plant found its way to TN. Been there since, right at 20 years now. Still dabbled in car restoration and repair on and off, and probably always will. But I have a new house, and when the big shop (foundation going down this spring) is finally built it will be more a hanger than an auto shop. And of course, RC airplanes are always buzzing the back yard as well! Next big step will be getting some instruction in a like type aircraft, despite on and off again training over the years, do not have a PPL yet, but am thinking the new Sport Pilot route may best suit my aviation interests. So, are there any MKIII's nearby that are willing to show a newbie around in a Kolb? Hope to hear from you soon, and thanks to all for a great list, and source for so much valuable information!
