ability or the probability of the hd tv towers. yep, those can go up higher
than two grand spaced where-ever they want. hd digital needs line of sight
transmission and will replace free tv -- ooops, analog tv transmissions. ya
see, the big boys want to rope us into paying for MANDATORY hd digital
whether we want or need it. clintons baby it is. line of sight doesnt mean
a KOLBS line of sight, but transmission wise. that means we gonna have
towers everywhere and this is a good thing for them cause we HAVE to pay to
use them or forget tv. us with sats will already be in the loop but we
still gonna have to watch our eyes off for unlit, new and old towers. good
thing our Kolbs really fly well cause we gonna have to yank and bank to keep
away from them when they strart growing which I understand will be mandatory
tv transmissions by 08. wonder if anyone ever gave thought to the use of
our emergency broadcast system which works analog in rain, wind, storms,
supposedly bombs. wont work in line of sight when a little rain blanks you
out. our government, the eighth wonder of the world! Keep your eyes
rolling and your heads a spinnin cause we gonna have wild ride some times.

Seriously, my first tightened sphincter reaction from one of them was
about 1994
and I hadn't done much flying for a spell. I was up doing happy low
level
circles in the air and one of those freshly sprouted things came into
view.
That put a damper on my cheery mood. But a real wake up call too.

Betcha the FAA/FCC has bought off on the group scenario. The XXX
in the above is mine since various lighting types have different
standards, and even within the same lighting type, depending on
heights involved.

I put trailing edge material (from Aircraft Spruce) on the trailing edge of
my ailerons and flaps for a cleaner more streamline look rather than use the
recommended method. I got the approval from Kolb to do this but they
suggested that I put the optional (at that time) balance weights on to avoid
flutter caused by the minor increased weight (couldn't have been more than
an ounce if that). I installed the balance weights but only used about two
inches of the heavy balance weights bolted to the ends of the balance arms.
While flying with my direct drive VW I never had a problem but when I
switched to my redrive VW I experienced a low frequency flutter. The redrive
VW cruised a good ten miles an hour faster using the same horse power. When
I started nudging 80 MPH the flutter would start. I then changed the balance
weights too ones that are app. four inches long with only one inch in the
balance arm. This has fixed the flutter problem and I have seen app. 95 MPH
for a few minutes and not even the hint of flutter.
I try to keep my empty weight down. I have read that people slide the
included weight in and out of the balance arm till the ailerons balance. I
suggest that the ailerons get balanced but they be balanced so that when
they are balanced there is only a inch or so in the balance arm with the
unneeded weight cut off rather than slid into the balance arm.

There may be unregistered structures involved as well. I
haven't found the cutoff data/date or anything definitive but get
the impression that there wasn't a big push to get these
structures registerd except to get a "No Hazard" determination
from the FAA. The FCC controls the radiation of signal, not
the reception of signal for the FAA would be the sole arbiter in
reception structure cases.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it... ; )

Now Ted, that really scares me and I'm sure when MZ. Clinton wins election
two terms out (cause, well we seem to forget the past only weeks ago, and
she seems so sincere), she will be able to mount the additional "big
brother" cameras on each one of them as an added bonus to the tax payers.

Charlie, Terry, you're right on!
The present cell trechnology is obsolete, but it works (sort of) so
everyone keeps it and uses it.
I don't think it will be too long before the MESH system or
something similar, replaces the cells. But the towers won't be torn
down --they'll be rented out as antenna platforms for business radio
and other stuff. One of the ones in Westchester County has had green
fiberglass branches added to it -- for purely cosmetic reasons. I
have to admit it looks better --
If a cell tower is a danger to you, you're flying pretty low! --
might be good to get a little more altitude.

I used to play a pretty mean pin ball game but in a plane, not! The area I'm
taking my lessons in has tower farms, power company transmission main line
trunks, little cell towers and a few AM and FM high towers. Add to that the
telephone wires, local power comp wires, cable comp wires and assorted
"unknown" wires and then put on the new and improved HD TV towers Ted Cowan
was talking about and only in 2008 and we will all need more powerful
engines to get us out of the jams. I remember back when I was hot and heavy
into Astronomy. I had an observatory dome in my back yard, same place I live
now. Traffic lights, street lights town lights, home lights were minimal and
the southern sky's were a great view. Now 15-18 years later I can barely see
the moon, because of all the lighting. What price we pay for progress. Oh
well we will continue to adapt our ways to fit our needs in order to
continue our loves.

Being such a high time Kolb pilot, 7 take offs, 7 landings and two go
arounds so far, and this is the one thing I really remember about the fifth
circuit around the patch. There was some light to moderate thermal activity
and I sensed a low rumbling and a little feedback from the stick as I
approached 85 MPH while trying to maintain altitude in the pattern. I looked
out the left side, 46 Hotel is flown from the right, and saw waves in the
wing skin and the left aileron flapping up and down. I pulled the throttle
back and watched the amplitude of the aileron excursions decrease and quit.
It was a bit unnerving but I made the landing, looked the aileron over for
any damage, inspected the hinge attachment rivets, and generally calmed
down. There was no damage and I didn't experience any more flutter during
the remaining two circuits, but I did use throttle to control my altitude
from then on and didn't approach the critical airspeed that seemed to bring
on the flutter again. I've done a better examination of the aileron and
hinge line since and have confirmed that there was no defprmation or damage.
I didn't build 46 Hotel, so I can't attest to how heavy or light the left
aileron is compared to the right. I'll put counter balances on the ailerons
before I fly it again.

Thanks for the information everyone !!!
After reading what everyone had to say I did a bunch of research on the net and
read about a lot of cases of flutter caused by loose trim tabs, etc. etc. [Shocked]
The more I read the more adding trim tabs scares me.... I will just
use the bungee trim system Kolb provides. I was really looking foward to electric
trim, I just dont think its worth the very real risk of a catastrophic fialure
caused by flutter.
Richard, I remember your nav light causing your rudder to flutter a bit, but I
did not know ailerons were also so prone to flutter. Hopefully Kolb put ailerons
counterweights in my MK-III kit, but if not I will add them.

Please gents, spare the partisan politicking. If the present prez were such
a wunderkind, he would repeal all these 'onerous' regs. IMO, he's the worst
prez ever, but you don't hear me whining ad nauseum about it (til it gets
unbearable like now). Is it me, or has the tower thread pony been flailed
enough?
