Rick/All,
I've run Pennzoil AIR COOLED 2-stroke in all my engines. Never a
problem. I don't consider it a 'cheap 2-stroke' oil tho.

Thanks to all who responded to my brake problems!
As Rick Neilsen and John Hauck suggested, my brake line likely blew out due
to my own ineptitude in assembling the thing in the first place. Live &
learn. Sounds like these "Nylo-Flow" fittings are acceptable, if installed
correctly. Will make sure the fittings are well & tight next time.
On the question regarding protecting these nylon (not plastic) brake lines
from UV, I keep the sun off by wrapping spiral wrap (typically used on wire
bundles) on all exposed brake line. I copied this idea from someone else on
this List (but I don't remember who).

FWIW -- I used braided-stainless brake lines on my Cessna -- they
worked fine & looked great but after a few hundred hours sprang a
leak. Apparently the braid can fracture & punch pinhole leaks in the
teflon tubing -- after quite a while. The drip gives you plenty of
time to correct things before any serious leaks occur.

Rick,
I dont mean to be ugly but if you read my question above you will see you
did not answer my question. I did not mean to start an oil war. I just am
trying to find out if it is true that Pennzoil goes bad after sitting on a
shelf for a year or so. It seems to me if it had a shelf life it should have a
warning on the bottle. PLEASE This is not a debate which oil is best!

Your nylo-seal fitting problem and Rick N's is the first time I have heard of anyone
having a problem. Instructions indicate not to overtighten the fitting,
so it would be easy enough to not tighten it to the properly.
Like I said yesterday, the right hand main wheel broke off when I crashed at Muncho
Lake. As I continued crashing, the 800X6 tire, wheel, brake, and axle were
being drug along by that little plastic brake line. It did not fail, but did
put some permanent kinks and bends in it. Have been flying with it that way
for the past 5 years or so with no problems. The stuff is tough.

Hesitate to jump in but there might be another cause of failure at the
fitting. Most of them work better with a special brass ferule inserted
into the end of the plastic tube. Or a short length of brass hobby shop
tubing works just as well. Just be sure to smooth the ends of the tube.

Since I have had such unique success in using Pennziol Air Cooled (note

I have it on good authority..... a person who knew a person who was in the
same county with a person who attended the
Rotax 2-stroke seminar at Sebring a couple of months back.... That no less
than Phil Lockwood, the east-coast Rotax
magnate, in his 2-stroke seminar.... made remarks to the effect that
Pennziol air cooled would indeed deteriorate in the plastic bottle if left
in storage too long... and that "too long" could be assessed by the
condition of the plastic bottle... The Gentleman is reported to have
opined that if the sides of the yellow plastic bottle showed evidence of
beginning to collapse inward... it was time to run that oil in your
weed-whacker, but NOT your mighty Rotax...
That's the way it was relayed to me the weekend after the seminar... that's
all I know about it...

Hi Ed:
I am fortunate. Do not have to fold. If I did have to fold my Kolb,
I would still use the same system I use now, AN bolts, washers, and
nyloc nuts.
Probably the most vulnerable attachment is the lower tailwires on the
tail post. On other than a manicured airstrip, safety pins and safety
rings are at risk of becoming unfastened. A 3/16 bolt inserted from
right to left, when standing behind the rudder and looking forward,
with washers and a nyloc nut make me feel much more comfortable.
Previously, I inserted the above bolt from left to right from habit.
Had occassion to come very close to losing the nut which was unscrewed
by alder bushed in my first off field landing in Alaska, 1994. From
tht time on, I always insert from right to left with nut on the left.
That way, the nut will be tightened as it is subjected to bushes and
heavy weeds, etc.
Doesn't take much longer to spin off or on the same amount of nyloc
nuts as it does to fumble with safety pins and rings, in my opinion.
Take care,
john h

Do not use a safety ring or safety pin on that lower tail wire bolt. Do
what John says, use a real bolt. For the other pins, the easiest way to
get a circle pin is to make your own. Go by Lowes or any hardware store,
get a spring with at least 1/2" to 5/8" ID, and cut out some rings with
a pair of side cutters, or best of all - a Dremel tool using a cut-off
wheel. You can easily make a half dozen of them in 20 minutes. Or spend
an hour doing it and give some to all your friends. They will think you
are a great guy.
Richard Pike
MKIII N420P (420ldPoops)
PeeEss to John: Are you sure about that right to left stuff? You got me
thinkin' (always scary) and I went to the garage and got a nut and bolt,
and if the bolt goes in from the left, and the nut is on the right
(looking from tail to nose) a wiping motion against the bottom of the
nut tightens it. If the bolt comes in from the right to the left, the
nut on the left end is loosened by a wiping motion on the bottom... Or
am I missing something? Again?

Hi John H,
I am trying to understand how the nut would be "tightened", when mounted on
the left side (as standing behind the tail looking forward). If I then stand
on the left side of the plane and look face in to the end of the bolt and
nut, it seems as though the bushes & weeds, as they pass from front to rear,
would rub against the bottom edge of the nut trying to turn it
counterclockwise, which would in effect screw it off the bolt. Am I misunderstanding
something here.

Awright, awright, don't rub it in --- Y'know I'd do anything ('cept spend
money) for that combo.

Brother Richard P:
I was backassward. Put the bolt in from left to right. As the nut on
the bolt, not the nut on the control stick (that's me) zips through
whatever it is zipping through, it will tighten rather than loosen.
Hope I didn't screw folks up too badly with the first iteration.
hehehe

Matt why don't you consider a Suzuki engine list. It seems to be catching on
as a conversion motor. In fact I am converting one for use on My Kolb.

Hi All,
I hope this doesn`t break the rules of the list but I thought some of you
hot shot pilots might like a try at this.
My best so far is 11.025 secs
Good luck
Pat

You are the pilot, how long can you go with this? I'm good for about 8
secs. Jerry
Very difficult at first. However, all you coordinated folks should master
this game in short order! The object of the game is to move the red block
around without getting hit by the blue blocks or touching the black walls.
If you can go longer than 18 seconds you are phenomenal It's been said that
the US Air Force uses this for fighter pilots. They are expected to go for
at least 2 minutes. Give it a try!!

Anyone interested,
Just checked out McMaster-Carrs web sight for Safety Rings.
They call them "Cotter rings" so that is what you want to search for on their sight.
They sell them Dirt cheap and have them in Steel and Stainless steel and
two differant finishes. Also have several differant sizes.
If you have never ordered from these fine folks you are in for a treat, they are
the fastest, best service in the world and the shipping is very reasonable.
Check their sight for just about anything you might want to buy, they probably
have it.
