Just an update. I have finished the inspection on the US and found several problems.
Both lift struts are cracked, left wing drag brace tag cracked, tail wheel
cracked. The engine rebuild was not necessary but I know it is good now. The
drive belts have been replace and the prop balanced, installed an instrument
pod and instruments cleaned and molly lubed all rod ends. As soon as I get my
order from Aircraft spruce I will make the parts I need and rig all flight surfaces.
My US should be ready to fly in a week or two.

I'm removing the original 15-6:00x6 tires that came on my Firestar II. The
wheels are the standard kind for Firestars, I think, using drum brakes. I
think all that are go-cart equipment originally, but I don't really know.

Dave my experience has been that when I changed from 15-600 x 6 tires to
the 600 x 6 that my cruise speed went down 3 or 4 mph. When I land on soft
field conditions they seem to roll easier and absorbed the bumps better.
Instead of buying new tyres ( pat should like that) I went to one of the
fbo at here and asked them about tyres, and they sold me a used set that
come off a super cub. They came with only a minimum of tread but they seem
ok for my use. I paid $35.00 for both tires and tubes. I guess that the
worn tread saved me a few pounds as well.

1. I have read that black rubber lines are fine with pure gasoline, but not
OK with pre mix...
The inner lining eventually delaminates and then disintegrates. I
personally experienced this
with a Gates rubber line... it put a large number of tiny black rubber
-------------------------
The black rubber fuel line that came with my boat has been in service for
over 15 years. When I have removed it from one of the fittings and looked in
side it looks like new. For a while I ran a clear fuel screen between the
squeeze pump and the engine and used some black fuel line purchased at the
local auto supply store. It would break down in short order, a year or two
is all I could get out of it. I never noticed the delamination, but it
would start to leak with pinholes through the sidewalls of the tubing. I
tried a few times then went back to the original tubing and have not had
trouble since.
I guess the moral of the story is ,,,,,, if you are using premix, buy
your fuel line at a marine supplier. And tell them it is for premix.

Just what is the dimensional difference between the 15-600 X 6 and the 600 X
6?
What are the pro's and con's of each, assuming both sizes are real
"aircraft" tires?

Group,
When I weighed my Firefly the first time it weighed 252 lbs Legal! After
adding bigger wheels and brakes, 2 strobes and a ballistic chute It now
weighs 286 lbs. Legal would be 276 when you add the 24 lb allowance to 254. My
Question is what will the FAA do if you are flying 8 lbs over? Does anyone know
of someone that was weighed by the FAA and were less than 10 lbs over, or
even a little more over??? Has ANYONE ever been weighed by the FAA? If so what
was done?

HI to all members of Kolb list.
I have been monitoring the list for a while now, since
I have purchased a 1985 Firestar. I have not responded
to any emails on the list since I am new to Kolb and
to building planes and know very little or nothing
about them. I am repairing the Firestar I bought which
was slightly wrecked. I noticed that this(1985 model
only has 5 full aluminum ribs and the new design
models have I think seven(?). The distance between
ribs is 26.5" with 3 false ribs. I was wondering if
this allows the fabric covering to billow in between
the ribs. Would it be prudent to put another rib in
between each of the 5 ribs that are there. This would
add only a couple pounds to each wing.
Any thoughts?
Thanks Mike

Hi,
The 5 rib wings are for "single place aircraft"
The 7 rib wings are for " two seaters"
Are you talking about adding "Ribs" or "False Ribs"

I know of one of those old firestars having a wing leading edge fail due to those
ribs breaking which resulted in a crash [Shocked] The plane I am talking
about had LOTS of hours and hard use on it. But Kolb put more ribs in the new
firestars for a reason...
If it were my plane, I would add more ribs... A couple of pounds to have a stronger
wing is a bargain. If you do not put more ribs in that wing, you will
always be wondering when you fly it :?

Just wanted to let you know that I installed the English u-joint today, and
it made a considerable difference! Hoo-ray! Based on your photos, I
started with 3 washers on the bottom, 2 on the top, and that nearly was
perfect. The plane still needs a bit of trim, so I'm thinking about making
it 4-and-1, just to see what it does. I'll be flying left-seat solo about
99% of the time, so I might as well make it neutral for that 99%.
Thanks for your help and encouragement!
