Hey ya'll,
My Firestar II is tough to steer using the rudder pedals & tailwheel. I use
the brakes often to get it into a turn & most times have to use them
throughout the turn especially when turning the tail into the wind.
I've got the tailwheel chains snugged up pretty tight so that shouldn't be
the problem. I've also lubricated everything in sight in the tailwheel area.
Mine has that tiny 25 cent tailwheel...which I figure is probably the reason
as it doesn't have the tread to grip the surface & actually turn. The
tailwheel slides around a turn, on pavement or grass.
Thanks for any ideas!

Ed in JXN,
Good story but if this happened before BJ Maule moved to Moultrie, then it had
to have happened long before 1976. I went to visit BJ to see his amazing STOL
aircraft in the flesh in 1971 when I lived in Atlanta, and he was definitely in
Moultrie when I saw him there. I had some PA-11 tail wheel time at the time
so he took me for a spin letting me fly the left seat. Of course I babied it (180
hp model, not the big engine ones) and was amazed at its performance compared
to what I'd flown before.
We landed and he said get out an stand over there by the hangar door and watch
this, and don't move no matter what I do. So I stood there in the open hangar
door and he taxied out a ways on the ramp spun around gave it full throttle and
was taking off right at me and jumped off the ground and climbed out over my
head and the hangar. Yikes!
Of course this can be done with a good Kolb now days but it was quite an amazing
feat for a heavy GA airplane.
Looks like one good flying story leads to another. Wonder what will come next.

Jason and Rick other "off-brand" engine flyers,
I have two airplanes both with 912 engines but would LOVE to see a good competitive
engine at much lower price. I have the 912 engines because I'm not much of
an experiementer. They are great engines but I really like hearing about the
alternatives. Please keep us all posted on whatever your experiences are with
your experiements. This is not a competition about who has the best engine and
when the discussion degenerates to that I quit reading it. Just be sure that
there are plenty of us, even 912 owners, who want to know as much as we can about
others engines.

Gentlemen,
Just spoke to Clara Kolb and the word is that they are not going to be
there over the Father's Day weekend. They are going to Iowa for a
vintage tractor expo and will be gone for a couple of weeks. Those of
you that know him or were there last time, saw his collection of John
Deer's and his passion for them.
That precludes any fly-in to their place on that date, although she said
that they will look at other dates to possibly still have a fly-in.
They thoroughly enjoyed having the last two! I told her that it was OK
and it was never intended to become an annual event, but only if they
wanted to have it.
Will let you know if any other date is suggested by them,

Jason,
I would like to encourage you and other BMW flyers to post their finding on the
list. While a few on the list seem defensive, there are many that are open to
new ideas.
I just spent an hour searching the archives about BMW's on Kolbs. I found that
the cost is around $3000, the weight is about 146 pounds, the hp is around 70,
the thrustline with a Rotax C box in the down position is about right. There
also seems to be some question on the availability of adapters for the gear box,
and maybe the availability of the R100 itself.
But if I had the chance to put a BMW on my Firestar II for less than $4,000, I
would consider it. I welcome any information about alternative engines. If I don't
like what I read, I can keep flying with my 503. I would like to replace
my 503 with a 4-stroke before it is wore out.

Non-Kolb:
Hi Thom,
You're right, most of the production had moved down there in the
early '70's, but he still maintained his Napoleon ops into the latter '70's.
Some aircraft were still built here, plus repairs and such were done. Prior
to the 'plywood' takeoff technique, the customers needing floats mounted
would fly their Maule into Napoleon, the gear and wings were removed, and
the plane was trucked over to Maule's house on Wolf Lake. The floats were -
floated! - and the airplane was lowered on from a small crane or A-frame and
reassembled. Lots of labor for non-amphibious floats!
BD made his 'real' money with the Maule tailwheel through his
Mechanical Products Co.
The old logo of a Maule coming out of the hangar door flying was
from a picture taken at Napoleon. Similar to the takeoff he did over you!
There was a movie with Burt Reynolds where they land one in a city street, I
don't recall the name. Smokey II? Also, the 'Southern Aviator' did a nice
article on son Ray and his wife Rautgunde a couple years ago.
Oh, and it's BD.

Hi Rev,
No, they still had a small crew here. Still got my logbooks! Ray
closed the remains in 1977, left me and a few others on GI Bill flight
training in the lurch. It all worked out, I finished in 1980 at a local
community college. BD had rocking chairs throughout the hangar, he'd sit
and watch workers and figure out designs, or improve production methods.
Similar to Thomas Edison, who had cots throughout his buildings where he
would take cat-naps throughout the day.
I've been accused of being psychic though. (Or was it psychotic?)

Ed/Gang:
Some years ago, on a flight in the MKIII to OSH, got into some typical
cruddy weather up around the Tennessee/Alabama state line. Got to the
point I found myself scud running, following valleys through the low
mountains to maintain a reasonable ceiling. I was not alone out
there. A Maule was also trying to find a place to weather the storm.
I heard the Maule talking to the FBO in Fayetteville, TN. I was also
heading that way. The Maule landed just ahead of me at Fayetteville,
in a frog strangling down pour. When I finally got into the FBO I met
Ray and his wife. We spent the afternoon together at Fayetteville,
including a good country lunch in town. Real nice down home folks.
After that day I always make it a point to go by and speak to them at
Lakeland and OSH.

Non Kolb-related Maule history follows - (slow day here-)
I went to work for the FAA in 1973, air traffic controller at Albany GA,
just down the road from Moultrie where the Maule factory was at.
Sometime in that period, BD Maule dredged a lake right between the
factory and the road, planted a few trees here and there around the
edges, and was well on the way to having a nice scenic little seaplane
base to view as you headed out of town. Unfortunately, the lake sprung a
leak, a sinkhole or something opened up, and his lake went dry for a
while. Eventually he got it plugged and able to hold water, turned out
nice, but for a while there it was source of humor for the locals...

Bill,
I still use the stock tailwheel on my Firestar II and the only time I have to use
the brakes for steering is to spin around a wheel (u-turn?). I do not use stock
springs and that may be the difference. My springs are compression types,
like found on a screen door.

FWIW - all the time I flew my 170, I nearly always had to tap the
brake to make a turn . Even with that big rudder! Tightening chains
wouldn't do it. Maule tailwheel. I just considered that a brake-tap
was simply the way you had to do it, and it always worked..
In a crosswind, sometimes there's just no way to keep it straight;
you have to gun it & do a circle. Once at Des Moines , they were
expecting the C-5 to come in and there were several thousand people
watching (of course!) I made a good landing but had a long taxi with
a strong crosswind. Ended up doing SEVEN circles on the taxiway. Most
embarassing. Maybe they thought it was a show, the Flying Farmer or
something. Hope so.
Tower: "What are your intentions?"
Me: "you ever fly a taildragger?"
Twr: "No"
Me: "Just be patient then, I'll get there eventually"
And I did, all ended happily. The C-5 came in & maybe they forgot
all about this spinning fool.
I wouldn't keep the chains real tight as it has to wear bearings,
bushings, shafts, whatever. Doesn't seem to work anyway, IMExperience
at least.
I doubt tread is a big factor; I've flown quite a bit with bald
tailwheels.
Good luck

Folks;
Reading the article about the Beemer, Wonder why they change the camshaft to
a reverse camshaft when it would be a bunch cheaper to have a prop built for
tractor configuration.
Only thing I can think of is the Beemer turns the wrong direction for the
gear box.
Wonder which way that sucker turns?

Hi John,
Your and Rev. Pike's stories help on this slow day. (Sorry Kolbers,
another story...)
I and my wife had gotten in a flight one late-summer day in a
Cherokee 180 at Ray's flight school here in Michigan. Was awakened about
3:00 A.M. by the phone, and Ray hollering, "What'd you do to my airplane?"
When I woke up more, I realized his 180 had been in an accident. I was the
last one on the sign-out book, so fingers were quickly pointed at me. The
plane had been taken out later that night, flown to nearby Brooklyn's grass
field and had an encounter with some power lines. Brooklyn's power was
knocked out, and the Piper staggered home somehow with the stabilator nearly
wrenched off. A testament to the design if ever there was one. Still had
the wires wrapped around the tail after landing. They surmised someone,
possibly tipsy, had 'borrowed' it. My bacon was saved when Rautgunde
remembered seeing us leave and waved from the window of the German
restaurant they owned on the field.
They also hosted awesome Oktoberfests on the airport, with tents and
"Oompah' bands, but those are some more stories! You're right, John, they
are great folks.
