(Bob) Hoover at a York, Pa. air show in "Ole Yeller" when he accidentally took out a major power line with his landing gear on a low level sneak in pass. Bob then did a slow pass while the tower did a visual check to see if there was any obvious damage to the gear, he then came around and landed, walked around the plane for a "look see" and took off again and finished his routine. Ole Yeller must have been one tough old bird.

Try easing the stick back at full throttle and see if it feels like your pointing up at almost a 40 degree angle before it stalls or "mushes". Then try a "high bank" circle at 30 or 32 mph. That's what impressed me the most about the addition of the VGs.

The problem with trying to take to much weight off a structure is that it starts to get weak, fatigue, and is not as durable. 30 pounds of airframe weight is 3% at my flying weight, that is not enough to make any noticable difference in performance... --> Kolb-List message posted by: WillUribe@aol.com Mike, Not smaller, the tail is the same as the MK-III classic. If you want it bigger then you can build it bigger, after all your the builder. But I suspect the bigger Horizontal Stabilizer was add to keep the airplane balanced after all that weight was added up front. Once the fuselage's extra weight was removed there was no need for the bigger tail. I also suspect the extra welding and materials on the early model Xtra was more added cost then what they wanted to add to the price of the kit. --> Kolb-List message posted by: WillUribe@aol.com Michael, There is no problem with structure weakening or fatigue. Had you seen the early Xtra and the new model you would have seen the difference. Most of what was removed, as I recall, was the chrome-molly steel that made up the cosmetic rounded edges on the fuselage. As I posted before this was originally done for aerodynamic reasons, it had nothing to do with structural. Now, I don't own a MK-III Classic or a MK-III Xtra but I do my homework before I purchase. After I decided on the Kolb product I couldn't make up my mind about which model to get. I don't remember how many times I called Dennis asking him about the Kolb models. It was until Dennis mentioned that he preferred flying the FireStar and as we say the rest is history. Hope this helps, Guillermo Uribe FireStar II N4GU El Paso, TX --> Kolb-List message posted by: "JetPilot" <orcabonita@hotmail.com> <snip> As far as the weight, I would rather have the heavier model. --> Kolb-List message posted by: "pat ladd" <pj.ladd@btinternet.com> My Mac can't open this one either!>> Hi Russ, perhaps you just have to be patient. I don`t have a Mac but my comp took a long time to download. Just surfaced after changing addresses. Phew! I have been through death, birth, marriage, divorce and moving house tops them all. The last time I moved, fifteen years or so ago it didn`t seem too bad, but this time...... Perhaps it is just age that robs us of the capability of keeping about two dozen balls in the air at once. Perhaps things are just more complicated. Just advising everyone, friends, Bank, utilities, insurances, investments,. seemed a full time job and a simple card just will not suffice for many corporations. Change of address has to be on THEIR form and signed. What a load of cobblers! However we are actually in residence, still surrounded by builders etc, `just finishing off`` their jobs. Surrounded by boxes full of heaven knows what including hundred of books. Nowhere to put them until I build shelves. Shelves cannot be erected until the decorating is finished...etc., Still, I am within 4 minutes walk of a good pub, 5 minutes from a top class restaraunt and 10 minutes closer to my airstrip so its not all bad. I fired up the old confuzer and had nearly a thousand posts waiting. I deleted quite a few without paying much attention but did I correctly pick up the fact that there would be no Kolb Family Fly in this year? Somebody confirm please. Cheers Pat do not archive --
