I have a friend who is telling me the same thing, but he has no Kolb
experience to base his suggestion on.
I have a 503DCDI and sometimes get close to 80MPH for short periods. Do you
fly that fast?
Your input makes me feel better about removing the bar, but I'd appreciate
your speed info.
Thanks,

Lar/All,
Sorry Lar, This was just posted on AvWeb.com on older pilots. Just remember
the saying, about making ststistics saying anything you'd like if manipulated
properly.
AVERAGE PILOT AGE INCREASING -- ACCIDENTS, TOO
Statistics compiled by The Associated Press suggest that the older you are, the
harder you'll fall. The news gathering organization pored over FAA and NTSB records
and determined that pilots older than 50 have a significantly greater chance
of crashing than younger pilots. The stats perhaps take on even greater
significance considering the fact that the average age of pilots is now 47. The
AP report also found that the accident rate went up with age, and that those
in their 60s were at a roughly proportional greater risk of crashing. Older pilots
were also in more fatal accidents.

I assume that you are talking about the factory enclosure. If so it will not buckle.
To check it close the windshield, put your hand in the middle at the furtherest
point from any support and push. If it feels squishey, don't do it. While
I took out the center post, I did retain the screw that held it at the top
of the pod. Remember the wind is not hitting it at a 90 degree angle. I have
seen 90 on mine, but not on purpose. Or you could do it like this, it is a lot
more trouble.

Well I see I still don't have the hang of the attachment part of this BB. I don't
seem to be able to preview my post, and have to do it by trail and error. Seems
mostly like error. Here is the other picture. I decided that I wanted doors,
so I built this one. I of course had to order chromoly, hinges, and a sheet
of lexan. Weld the new doors and fit the lexan. I like it, but I wasn't able
to get the thickness of lexan that I would have prefered. (0 is too think and
the one that I have is a bit too thin, but is still usable.

I didn't like it either, so used a tube on each side of the insturment
panel, back up to the steel framework behind my head. I then used the right
new tube for the hinge for the door. I no longer have the plane or I could
send you a picture.

I'm finding more and more on the subject of blended ethanol/gas as I go -
most
of it not good. Here's a very good research paper done by Onan Engines in
Australia
that Jim Baker recommended:>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I will throw this out and see what ya all say bout it.
The simple test for alcohol in gas is fill a test tube 1/2 with water and
mark the level on the outside. Then fill the remainder of the test tube
with gas. Shake it up and let it settle. If there is alcohol in the gas
the level of the water will go up from the mark. The difference will be the
amount of alcohol that was in the gas. Now if you pour the gas off the
top, you should have alcohol free gas. With a water alcohol mix left over.
If this principle works?????? You could use a 50 gal test tube. And render
out 20 to 25 gal at a time.
Alcohol should attract an equal amount of water before it will separate out
of the gas.,,,, 10% of say 50 gal should be 5 gal.... you would probably
want to start with 10 to 15 gal of water then fill the 50 gal test tube (
DRUM ) with gas. If you prop the tank up on edge and siphon out the water
from the bottom till the gas starts to run clear. Using the last bit to
start your next batch. You should be left with the good stuff.
My daughters father-in-law, drives a 18 wheeler gas carrier, and tells me
that the storage tanks where he gets his gas will have 2 ft of water in the
bottom... but when they fill his truck they draw the fuel out at the 5 ft
level. Now if they were using alcohol in the gas this would not work.
Also when they pump petroleum products through underground pipelines they
use thousands of gallons of water to separate the different grades of fuel.
When the operator sees the difference in color he will switch the fuel from
one tank to the other. and the water will separate out in the bottom if the
large storage tanks.
Maybe it is easier to buy av gas or av gas mixed 50/50 with mogas. That
would take a 10 % mix down to 5%.
Worth every cent you paid fer it.

I have been following the "old pilots" thread and thought it had a familiar
ring to it. Sure enough, I found an article in my April issue of IFR that is
similar. It is however; relating to weather related accidents, age of pilots
and age at which they learned to fly. I am on the East coast and wonder if
these two articles are related(?).

Subject: | Improving Roll Control on the FireFly |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Jack B. Hart" <jbhart@onlyinternet.net>
FireFlyers,
I made some new aileron yoke control arms to improve roll response. How it
was done can be seen at:
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly122.html
I recognized there was a little play in the system at the "Tee" bar, but I
did not believe it caused enough of a problem to be worth the effort to
change it. But, after moving to I22 with a different runway orientation, I
discovered that most of my flights start and stop with a cross wind. Also,
the average wind speed seems to be greater here than what I experienced in
Missouri at K02.
With a little bit of play in the stick, you lose the hand pressure sensation
as the ailerons rock from one side to the other. While this is happening,
the FireFly tends to get a little ahead of you because you have to move
through the control dead space to keep the FireFly side slipping down the
runway center line. As result you keep hunting and wobbling from side to
side of the center line. Removal of the play removes all stick displacement
and all one has to do is add or reduce pressure to keep the FireFly side
slipping right on down the center line.

Tom,
The information that I gave you about using .090" Lexan without the bar was from
the old Kolb company. I have flown 90 mph many times without the bar, but I
know of no one flying without the bar and .060 Lexan.

Dave,
We have a similar wing and spacing. From what I have read about VG's, the 1 inch
difference from the LE should not cause our difference.Where is your CG? Are
you near 37% like I am? Maybe that could explain the difference in stall charactoristics.

Actually I guess I mislead you, about the "not on purpose." The incident
came about when I was dropping down to a area that I wanted to see from
about 2000 feet agl. I throttled back to midrange and pointed the nose down.
I finally got back to my gages and saw that I was doing 90 or better. We had
just had some discussions about shock cooling and I was overly concerned
about that. Now if I am that high, I just spiral down in a steep turn,
trying to quit before I get too dizzy.

Interesting idea, Boyd.
I wonder if the water grabs all the alcohol, or leaves some behind. I remember
reading about this test 15 or 20 years ago in Untralight Flying magazine when
"gasohol" was the rage. Actually, the idea of using a 50 gallon drum to separate
out a supply of real gas might just work.
So, the question remains about what to do with the ethanol/water mixture left over?
Could you drink it? Perhaps you could sell it to the "Sea Foam" company?
