Michael,
I've just got to challenge you on this one. As already posted, the, umm, .... what
shall we call it 'degrading' of responses 'old' verses 'not so old' is measured
in milliseconds. Still the remaining responses are far far above any safety
threshold, and that's the only standard you should be judging this by. Dont
be fooled by the hype that is transmitted by some organisations or individuals
with another (hidden) agenda to follow.
Here are some facts/quotes for your consideration;
In an April 17, 1959 letter from FAA Administrator Elwood Quesada to the
Reverend Theodore Hesburg (urging Hesburg to serve on a board to approve the Age
60 Rule), Quesada wrote: "There exists at present no sound scientific evidence
that airline piloting, or any other aeronautical activity, becomes critical
at any given age."
In a November 24, 1984 letter from Dr. Frank Austin, the Federal Air Surgeon, to
Dr. Stan Mohler, a former FAA medical staff member, Austin wrote: "There is
no medical basis for the Age 60 Rule. I believe this and Admiral Engen (then
FAA Administrator) believes this. It's an economic issue."
On February 15, 1989, Dr. George Kidera, an original member of the panel promulgating
the Age 60 Rule, wrote: "Granting qualified pilots over the age of 60 exemptions
from the provisions of 14 CFR 121.383(c) will not compromise safety."
In May 1995, an Australian Judge who overturned the Australian Age 60 Rule stated:
"Given the time and effort expended in America examining the age-60 rule,
it is remarkable to say so, but it seems to me that none of the cited studies
supports any conclusion about the relationship between that rule and aircraft
safety."
And so on, and so on. I wont add any more quotes, this should be enough and there
are other forums where this is thrashed to death. Please just be aware that
there is a difference between the union type views which are associated with
career promotion and retirement benefits etc on the one hand and those such as
here on the Kolb list who do it just because of the sheer fun of it !
I'm 59 now, 20,000 hrs +, still love flying, still passing my medicals, still passing
my proficiency checks, why should I stop just because of the politics of
some union or companies economic agenda ! I'll continue to fly subject to medical
and proficiency untill I want to stop.
And surely the sheer fun of flying could be no better enjoyed than in something
like a Kolb !
That newspaper article comes under the category of;...... 'Dont let the facts get
in the way of a good story !'

There's a new engine being developed in Belgium that, I think, will challenge the
Jabiru, Rotax's etc, for market share once in production.
Ground runing is virtually finished and test flying is in progess now. (Wish it
had a PSRU though)

Hello,
I'd like to point out that the figures are slightly skued to appear that
way simply by economics.How many people in their 20's have the money to own
their own airplane compared to the numbers , say, in their 40's. I know they
are out there, but look at the pilots that are owners where you have your
plane at or at the county airport and guess their age groups. I think the largest
group will be in their late 30's to mid 40's so this will make all private p
ilots that are out there look old to those who simply read statistics. Age
probably does play a roll in slowing down a pilot's skills and I support the 60
rule. If you are over 60 you shouldn't be allowed to fly an aircraft like an
SR-71 or an F-18. But everything else should be fine. Okay, I'll go back to
lurk mode now.....

Two fuel pick-ups?
Unless the fuel level is above the fuel pump having two fuel suction lines will
not gain you a thing. If the fuel level is below the fuel pump, when one of the
two pick-ups is exposed to air, air is all your pump will get. This is why
on low wing airplanes like Piper Cherokees, there is not a BOTH position on the
fuel tank selector, but is on the high wing Cessnas where the fuel pump is gravity
fed.
If you don't believe this fill a glass half full of water (or Scotch if you like)
and suck on two straws simultaneiously with one below the top of the liquid
and the other above the liquid. You'll never get drunk doing this but you might
hyperventilate trying.
Of course if you have a submersible pump like in the bottom of water wells, then
this is of no consequence.

Man did an excellent job of saving his buns. He had everything
working against him long before the engine quit. After it quit, power
transmission wires, lots of trees, another power line, and then a
borrow pit that had more cast iron than a junk yard. Don't worry
about the airplane until you get yourself on the ground.

I recall 40 years ago after I earned my private pilot ticket that I did some really
stupid aviating things, and survived anyway. Experience, age, and recognition
that I am not physically immortal have done a lot to tame my approach to
flying.
Plus I fly a lot more now in any calendar period you want to use than I did when
I was younger. Recent experience (as in the last month or so) is a pretty good
indicator of competence, so more active fliers are generally safer than less
active fliers. I had surgery recently and laid off flying for three weeks, the
longest spell of not flying in the last 4 years since I retired. Was I a safer
pilot on my first flight after a 30 year hiatus or now that I'm four years
older and fly an average of 80-100 hours a year?

with my T_Bird. I landed behind a House .The plane was bent up bad but I

In the UK there's a wee (small) Welshman in or approaching his senior years and
what's his job ? ..... He takes up young sprogs in a 1950's era Hawker Hunter
jet fighter (the two seat version) and teaches them how to recover from flat
spins ! ! ! You know that manouver which is basicaly impossible to recover from
without something like a recovery chute ! But he does it, time and time again.
Guess he's the UK's version of Bob Hoover ! But no doubt on hitting 60 he'll loose
his marbles !
Just thought I'd mention it. [Wink]

Hey Guys,
Yes, I'm not really happy with my fuel pick up system, Later I'll
probly try the system where the vent is in the second tank.....The only thing
that I don't like about that is drilling a hole in the bottom of the first
tank.... But then again.... I do want to add a drain cock on the bottom of the
tanks....Somethin like the one Paul Petty put on he Kolbra....
But I've been on the look out for a fitting that will allow the very bottom to
drain..... I might have to make something...
Plenty of time for improvements....

One thing I like about that system is that it requires no holes in
the bottom of the tanks.
A drain cock in the bottom of the tanks may be a good idea if a
fitting can be installed that actually drains the very bottom. All
the fittings I've seen used on these poly tanks stand up inside the
tank preventing the very bottom from draining.
What I like about a tank without a bottom hole is that it can easily
be removed periodically for complete clean-out.

I am a bit interested in what the variations are in this distance, if there

Hello all,
I would like to hear from you if you're a builder who has successfully
installed and flown an alternative engine in your plane. I'm compiling a
builder's roundup for Kitplanes magazine, and am looking for an
installation that's flown for a minimum of 300 hours, and is currently
flying. Also, we will not address any rotary engines, since a separate
article will cover those engines.
For the builders that we profile, the magazine will also be able to pay
you $100 for the write-up. I'll be at Sun 'n Fun until late morning on
Friday (April 7), so if you fly in, I'd be happy to take the photos
there. If not, we would also need at least 2-3 good photos, including a
close-up of the engine and an overall shot of the aircraft. Additional
photos would be great, and all photos will be returned. If you have
digital photos, it is very important that they be high-resolution, at
least 300 dpi. I have a list of specific areas to address if you'd like
to participate, but we can handle that off-line. Please feel free to

When I took my check ride for my PPL in 1999 the examiner was 89 years old.
Last Spring I attended her "retirement" dinner at the Tennessee Aviation
Museum. Her mind is still very sharp but she just doesn't get around now
like she did when she was just 90. She announced at her "retirement" "not"
dinner that She was real pleased that the city of Morristown had renewed her
contract to manage the airport for another year. If you are ever in NE
Tennessee stop by and see her at MOR. She had around 58,000 hours when she
quit instructing. Evelyn Johnson is her name.

Hey Guys,
You might have read about the trouble I had with my Windscreen
on my second flight....
Someday I'll make a "Full enclosure" , but for now I put a brace in the windscreen....
I cut the Aluminum Tubing at 4' 10" and bent it around something 15"
Dia.
I put some tape on the Lexan to make my marks....
I used 1/8" SS rivets , and I drilled the Lexan bigger ( 5/32 )
Afterwards I pulled off the tape , some of the adhesive stayed on...
I cleaned it off with Mineral Spirits....Then I cleaned the whole windscreen with
some of my disposable CD cleaner cloths....( Rubbing Alcohol ) It cleaned it
VERY GOOD and didn't scratch it....

I shows you how far a dead engine will take you .... all the way to the scene
of the crash ....bet you'll get there 30 minutes before the EMT guys. etc.
Really - it is a "streaming video" so it's hard to tell how big it is.
Must be pretty large on the server.

I'll place Miss Evelyn right up there along side my friend Ed Long.
Ed died in his early 80's. However, when Ed died, he has more flying
hours than any other person on earth, 63,000 I believe. Will have to
go look it up. NOTE: Can not find any info on Ed Long and his
record. Far as I know, he still holds that record for most flight
time.
Had the honor of flying in my MKIII with Ed Long. He liked the way it
flew, but did not like the seat. Well, since that flight, I fixed the
left seat to be a tad more comfortable.

PS: While I was searching for Ed Long's record, I did find that an 82
year old man in Ireland solo'd a Robinson helicopter. Now that is
indicative of how old farts fall apart. I sure this elderly gentleman
is an exception.

How are you? For this purpose, anything other than the standard
certified-type engines (Lycoming, Continental...), generally,
experimental engines not allowed in certified aircraft, and engines that
were originally meant for other vehicles, such as auto and motorcycle
conversions.

That is correct.
It is a characteristic of the Kolb design.
Depending on the situation, it is an excellent way to lose a lot of
altitude in a short period of time at minimum airspeed.
To recover from the mush, I release some back pressure on the stick
and it is flying.
Does not work nearly as well with full flaps.
