Hi Jerry and gang, consider some research before redesigning Homers'
wing. That wing tip that you mentioned as causing extra drag may also be hindering
the high pressure from under the wing from comming up onto the low pressure
on top of the wing, therefor distroying lift on the main wing area.

I understand the reason it is there. I would think at cruise speeds the need
would minimize. I was thinking Vortex generators on both top and bottom at
the last rib may reduce this problem at lower speeds. I will probably leave
to factory specs. One concern I had with doing this would be losing aileron
area.

If anyone here is interested in buying tires of this size for their
Kolb, let me know. I have a set that I put on the Titan and they looked
ridiculous so I took them off. They will look and perform much better
on a Kolb. They have less than 10 take-offs and landings on them. Mine

Jerry, I shortened my wingtips by 7 inches on each
wing in order to get the plane through a 28' door with
a little clearance. I just pushed the tips in till
the curve started and riveted all the bracing back in
place. I saw Homer at Oshkosh and got his approval.

Remember the tips are at an incline to the relitive wind, same as the rest
of the wing, they are producing plenty of lift by deflecting air downward.

FireFlyers and Kolbers,
Yesterday the FireFly passed the 200th hour in the air.
The last ten flights have been used to dial a new needle and jet combination
in and to record gph flow rates for various engine speeds. The engine is
not running up to Simonini specs, which I believe are very optimistic. But
it is running to the specs published by the North American supplier,
Speedwing Aircraft. At 5,500 rpm the Victor 1+ will cruise at 2.25 gph and
below 5,400 rpm it will cruise at 2.0 gph or less.
The nice thing about this new jet and needle combination is that there are
no hot spots across the rpm range.
Looks like it is going to be another nice day for flying. Off to get
another data point.

As I have stated before, I'm not an engineer and this is worth exactly what
you paid for it.
All Kolb aircraft have a straight, rectangular planeform wing. For the
purposes of lift distribution in high speed cruise, it is the worst
planeform to use. For the purposes of lift distribution at stall it is the
best.
Discussing the Kolb wing tip as a lift producing device is, well, quite
frankly, the back assward view. If we could look at the airflow over the
wing starting at the root and working outboard we would see that somewhere
around 75 to 80 per cent of the way to the tip the air begins to turn, drawn
by the difference in pressure between the top and bottom of the wing, and
run spanwise down the wing. This effect becomes more pronounced as the wing
angle of attack increases. So it comes down to an inescapable conclusion.
Wing tips don't produce lift, wing tips reduce loses due to spanwise flow.
Now what is you want to do?
Do you want to land slower and shorter? Take a look at the work done by the
STOL speciality shops. To inhibit spanwise flow, they add wing fences and
wingtips with a down ward curl along the trailing edge. The benefits are
that you get to go slower AND maintain an unstalled flow over the ailerons
so they remain effective at the lower airspeed.
Do you want to go faster with very low induced drag in cruise? I hate to
break it to you, but you bought the wrong airplane. The Kolb has a boatload
of parasitic drag at all airspeeds and that is far more effective at
inhibiting its cruise performance than anything going on at the wing tips.
Even if you could clean up most of it, the Kolb would still be Vne limited.
I have no trouble at all reaching red line airspeed in my Mk III while
trying to maintain altitude in the grips of even a mild Kansas thermal.
My suggestion would be this, concentrate on the areas that will get you the
biggest bang for the buck. Streamline the lift struts, gear legs and control
tubes. Make a good sealed gap cover. Seal the gaps around all the
stabilizers and the gaps at the control hinge lines. These things can be
done very cheaply, will get you immediate benefits, and most important,
won't compromise the structure of the wing.
You will, of course, do exactly as you please.

58 hp/65 mph , 90 hp/85 mph + a lot more petrol.
But then I'm a slow guy, happy with a slow plane.
Buy a Sonex if you want a fast, simple airplane.
I like feeling like I'm riding around the sky on a barcalounger
instead of in a sardine can.

Another aviation legend goes west... this from the Cessna Pilots
Association e-letter, 4/20/06... just in case you haven't heard.
Legendary X-15 Pilot and CPA Member Scott Crossfield killed in
Cessna 210 crash in Georgia. Wednesday, April 19th, 2006,
Scott Crossfield, age 84, left Prattville, Alabama about 9AM in his
1961 Cessna 210A. He was alone & headed home to Manassas,
Virginia. A little before noon radar & radio contact with Scott was
lost about 50 miles northwest of Atlanta. There were Thunder-
storms in the area at the time. There's also an unconfirmed report
that there were engine problems. The wreckage of the aircraft with
Scott's body on board, was found by searchers about 1PM EST
today near Ranger, Georgia.
Scott was the first of the "Engineering Test Pilots."
An aeronautical engineer by education, he took test flying from the
seat of the pants days to that of an exacting science.
His accomplishments are many, including:
- First to fly at Mach 2
- First to fly the X-15
- Set speed & altitude records (later exceeded) of Mach 2.97,
& 81,000 feet, in the X-15.
- First to fly at Mach 3
When I was a teenager I read a book, "Always Another Dawn", that
Scott had written about his experiences on the Douglas Skyrocket
& the North American X-15 programs. That book was one of the
influences that steered me to a career in aviation. And when ever
I started thinking that I was a pretty good pilot, I would remember
the film of Scott landing the X-15, with a control problem. The air-
craft is bucking like a bronco, clearly not in full control. Scott is
timing the dips, so the aircraft can contact the lake bed, at the
bottom of one of the dips, before it runs out of airspeed & stalls.
He might have been the only pilot in the world that could have pulled
of that feat, but he did. Clearly, a pilot with skills beyond that of all
but the very best.
About 20 years ago a gentleman with a broad brimmed hat comes
in to the Cessna Pilots Association tent at Oshkosh and says he
would like to talk with "John Frank" about his 210A. He introduces
himself to me & I am dumbstruck & speechless. Here was the man
I had admired all these many years & he was asking me questions!!!
We had a very nice visit that lead to a close friendship these past two
decades. I found Scott to be a very warm person, who was totally
unassuming about his accomplishments.
When the news came to me this morning that Scott had been killed in
a plane crash, I found it almost impossible to believe. My hero, my
mentor, my friend, gone. And as I close this obituary with a safety
tag line I have used frequently, there are tears streaming from my eyes.
More than ever- LETS ALL OF US BE CAREFUL UP THERE.

I remember a Kolb Mark3 at Oskosh that had lengthened the wings
to slow it even more so they could do hang glider tows. Now that
was neato. I'd like to see leading edge slats on one also, slow it
down to about a 15 mph flight.

Been there, done that, on my Firestar II. I would not recommend it. I
thought that I would gain some speed but I could not see that it did that
but slowed the take off a bit ( Not that that hurt anything). I shortened
the bow about 8 inches on each side. In my opinion, you will not gain
anything worthwhile.

I did - to 26'9" - I'll send some pictures. I think it works fine. I have standard
Kolb Ribs (built on a wooden jig - the old fashion way) - different wing
bow ...a few other things different but not with the wings though - execpt VGs.

Must have been tricky to shrink.
Busy day of moving vehicles today. When you live in the north
country and don't have a lot of storage space it means shuttling
contraptions to and fro that haint run in 6 months.
-jumpering the dead ignition on the old Massey.
Took a gallon of Molson's but I did it. The Kolb is back up at
the runway, at the mercy of the rodents, bees, wasps, coons
walking all over it.
Now to get my good brother to help spread the wings.

Living just two miles from the airport really helps. Flew today for a
little over a half hour at 5,400 rpm, 52 mph gps, with an average fuel burn
of 1.91 gph. It actually is doing a little better than this, as the fuel is
measured in the hangar. So fuel used to taxi out, warm up, take off and
taxi back in is included in the total, while the time is kept from lift off
to touch down.
It is great to be able to fly without gloves and LLBean. I still wear a
neck sock, vest and a heavy zipper sweat shirt. It is fun to be up with the
hawks.

I have been flying rc since the late 1970tys dropped out for about 10 years and
saw a flying wing on ebay with an electric motor. bought it and have been flying
it with the new brushless motors. I do not think I could come close to
this kind of 3d flying. I have thought of buying a nice 3d ship because they
have become quite reasonable. check out the following link.

This comes with a brushless motor and the radio. It is made of epp foam and quite
well constructed. I still dont know if I have enought fingers to do all the

I have been in RC for about 2 years now, but not the sort of precision
on that video. Have gotten into using fan fold foam, and duplicating WW2
fighters and early/modern jets by using 3 views and a print program that
blows them up to full kit size. Then you lay the plans over the foam,
and start cutting - Currently flying an F7U1 Cutlass, a Sukhoi SU27, an
F14, and a Curtiss Helldiver. Had a great 38" span Kolb Firestar with a
brushless motor until a kid from church stuck in in the top of a tree.
Scratch building is what I really like, normally go from a 3 view to
ready to fly in 8 hours or less. Have been thinking about a web page
with some ideas on it...
