Here is some info from but not much. Not sure what type aircraft was involved.
LILLIAN, Ala. (AP) One man was killed and another injured Wednesday morning
in the crash of a small ultralight plane in a rural area of Baldwin County near
the Alabama-Florida line.
Baldwin County Sheriff's Department spokesman John Murphy said the aircraft with
two men aboard crashed about 9:15 a.m. near an airstrip off Shields Road in
the Lillian community.
The pilot, Scott Hanft of Lillian, died in the crash. Friends said he turned
50 years old Wednesday. The plane owner, Charles Bingle, was badly injured in
the crash and airlifted to a nearby hospital.

If that Hoerner Style wing tip does to a Kolb what they do for a
Cherokee, the results must be wonderful. Of course the original shape
of the Hershey bar wing tip on the Cherokee is not as good as the
original Kolb wing tip.

Kolbers/Jerry,
Sorry for my late opinion on wing tips, but something to think about and
maybe someone will glean some info from this. Im sure you are thinking
about aerodynamics of shortening wing tips but when I was building my
firestar II I knew the length of the standard fuselage would fit in my
garage. But with the wings folded the firestar would not fit. I had to
reduce the wingtips by 5 inches each side for a total of 10". This
brought the folded wings right to the end of the rudder, plus don't
forget to accommodate an inch or so for the counter balance tube that
sticks out of the aileron, or wingtip strobes. Now, with my firestar
tucked away in my garage, the nose barely misses the closing garage door
by less then an inch.
Just a note, when I had to cut the wing tips down, a then visiting
renowned Will Uribe(firestar owner/builder) advised me to take off as
little as possible, for I will need all the lift when loaded down and in
the middle of summer heat(density altitude).
This reminds me of a story about one of my favorites-Ben Ransom. He was
building his firestar kxp and shortened his tail boom tube to make his
firestar fit in the garage/trailer. He didn't think about the folding
wings at the time. When he first mounted his newly finished wings and
folded them, that is where he realized that shortning the boom tube was
for not. I'm glad he shared that experience with all of us at the time,
it made me think...
Feel free to visit our website, I have pictures of the shortened
wingtips there.

Looks Good.
I found some "push/pull" cables that were accidently the right
length. They take a lot of slop out of the Brakes. Most brakes don't have
much room between being to loose and dragging/rubbing anyway.

Hi Possum,
It also looks like yours is "higher" than mine....Mine were
so low I was scraping the bottom pan pretty bad....
Yes, the brakes have a "Short Range" ...I already had to shorten my adjusters
a little....

It was a Chinook two seat. It had been rebuild and test flown about two weeks prior
to the accident. It is suspected that there was some type of engine failure
or power loss.

I would like to see the nicopress sleeves doubled up. On every wire
pictured. Nicos are cheap for the benefit that redundancy provides.
Maybe the factories have enough quality control that they can get by
with just one... we are amateurs, nicos are cheap, and redundancy is a
good thing.

My guess is you're looking at those single nico press sleeves on the
horizontal stablizer landing wires as well as the control cables to the
rudder.
It's an OWT that two nicos are needed on a cable. I suppose it got its start
with DIck Eipper or one of his contemporaries who first started selling kit
hang gliders. I know it was in the plans for the Seagull III I built in '73
/ '74. At least Mike admitted that the second nico was only there to contain
the cable end so you wouldn't snag the sail or yourself. In actual fact the
cable should be left sticking out the end of the sleeve 1/4" and a single
sleeve, swaged per spec's and checked with the gauge that came with the
swaging tool is all that is required to make a cable termination that will
hold past the breaking point of the cable. Wills Wing always used a thick
heat shrink tube over the sleeve and raw cable end to protect sails and
fingers. It was clear enough that you could inspect the sleeve and check the
cable end for any slippage after that last wing over.
One sure way to make a wire termination that can fail before the breaking
point of the wire is to put a bubble, the two cables do not lie flat along
side each other between the nico sleeves, in the termination between the two
nicos. I've made a few bubbled cable terminations over the years, all it
takes is to put a slight twisting moment into bringing the handles together
while swaging. I cut up every one of them and made new cables. I would
advise anyone who asked to do the same.
