Lar,
You don't need to defend yourself from this kind of bullshit! You're a
friend and Kolb building/flying is a hobby and we "play" with our hobbies in
our own way and in our own time. We take ribbing from our friends but it is
all in fun. When someone turns it into venom, then that person has a much
more serious problem then not getting Vamoose in the air. Tell ya what,
something tells me that you've got a hell of a lot more friends than he has
and it seems to me that's a bit more important.

Hey Gene,
If you only need 1-time transport, I'd recommend a U-Haul 26' box

i want to personally thank mr bourne (big lar, as he is affectionately known
on the kolb list) for the many years (maybe 10 now?) of intelligent,
experienced, clever, witty, if not down right funny, contributions to this list.
there are several people on this list i've come to "know" mostly in an cyber
sense, except for mr. john hauck & mr. john williams whom i've met briefly
analogically speaking at sun n fun & reklaw, & to appreciate for their vast
experience with these lite home built aircraft, esp the kolbs, & their most
generous willingness to share "the whole picture", both "good & bad", that is their
triumphs as well as their missteps. this knowledge has been invaluable to me as
a potential home bldr& driver. I count mr bourne as foremost among these.
as for the kidding he takes for moving with care n caution, & with proper
priorities for other important agendas in his busy life, i relate all too well
to
that. but without his inspirational perseverance, i might not now be actually
bldg my own kitplane. it seems i bought my boys a "folboat" way back in the
late 60s which we addressed with enthusiasm until we got the keel laid and the
ribs in place, but suddenly fell heir to a ready to float sail boat, at which
time we ceremonously hung the folboat from the garage ceiling with all parts
neatly stored for the time when we'd surely finish it. well 25 yrs later &
increasing grief from all who saw or even heard of it, esp my boys who began to
hear my early mutterings about bldg an airplane.
without mr bourne's example of pressing on in spite of serious obstacles
(having a prop fly off in one's yard if i recall correctly seemed not an
insignificant caveat), yet there he was day in & out, slowly but surely working
his way
back from such a scary happenstance. so if he, why not me. i now feel like
the time is right & i'm working steadily myself just as is mr bourne. for
that i am deeply indebted to him and the other great folk who share with us all
on this list.
if n when i ever get this thing in the air, i plan to seek out mr bourne
whereever he is and give him a demo (a ride may be pushing it; he is obviously
a
very prudent and careful kind of guy). hopefully that will happen at one of the
upcoming MV outings which look n sound so great. (mr hauck & mr bourne have
always said that any & all are welcome ! even if they're astride something
other than one of homer's great flyers.)
so mr bourne, please dont let these bitter slings & arrows, probably driven
by jealousy, dismay or distract u from ur chosen path. some of us are depending
on u. (no pressure tho) btw: some guy bought the folboat when we had a
garage sale to move to a new house: came back 2 wks later with his "new" folboat
all done, shiny & seaworthy, to thank me for providing him with such a classic
water craft!
& finally, congrats to the kolbers for another "monumental gathering" of
eagles recently. it seems to get bigger n better each year. i can hardly wait.
all the best ! john bowman, baton rouge, la-- about to start covering an
avid flyer from airdale LLC. (i'm already way past my folboat project! eh
wot....)

Hi Lar/Robert/Dave/Everyone,
First of all I think Robert and Dave said it best:
"Let us hear no more of this kind, it adds nothing and
takes away
everything."
-BB
"You don't need to defend yourself from this kind of
bullshit! You're a friend and Kolb building/flying is
a hobby and we "play" with our hobbies in our own way
and in our own time."
AzDave
As for Lar,
I think everyone that has met him, and/or followed his
project, respects his character and engineering
abilities, and realizes he likes to invent and
improve. That causes the project to move slower than
someone intent only on 'getting into the air'. We all
benefit from this experimentation by learning what
works, and what doesn't. He is also particularly
friendly and helpful with all his friends, a quality
far more important, I believe, than the speed at which
he builds.

This is of interest to Kolbers and all other pilots as it shows how the system
works when we really need it. As you know, Memphis is home to all Fed Ex planes.
This 45 second video shows the approach of about 90
aircraft into Memphis, starting from about 22:00 in
the evening of Aug. 8, 2003. A fast moving storm
arrives from the northeast of the airport, forcing
aircraft into holding patterns around the clouds.

Subject: | Advice on repairing UltraStar Wing |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "David Kulp" <undoctor@rcn.com>
Hi All,
Last fall I spent weeks on my UltraStar, replacing the boom tube with a =
thicker Firestar tube and reconfiguring the nose more like a Firestar. =
I also repainted it to make it snazzy, rather than a boring yellow with =
black metal paint job. Then I folded the wings and tail, and tarped it =
and tied it down for the winter.
We had a few days of very high wind and one morning when I awoke and =
looked out the window I saw my beloved project laying on its right side. =
The wind tore a tie down loose and flipped it, causing damage to the =
right wing. Between all my necessary Spring projects and total =
discouragement I didn't untarp it until Saturday to take some pictures =
and get some advice on how to go about repairing it.
When you sight along the leading edge, which is on top on a US folded, =
you can see a bend in the leading edge tube from the front (inside) of =
the wing to about 7' back - it is about 1 1/2" out of alignment at the =
center of the bend.
I made a 2 X 4 rig of two cross-members cut and padded to fit over the =
folded wings and a 2 X 4 "ridge board" extending between the two =
cross-members to create a drainage rake in the tarp to prevent melted =
snow and rain forming an ice block in between the wings. When the plane =
flipped, the rig managed to strike and bend the trailing edge of the =
aileron and the innermost tube that forms the shape of the wing.
Additionally, where the drilled bolt which fits into the folded wing =
"carrier" is screwed into the wing, it is out of alignment and the =
drilled bolt doesn't slip effortlessly into the carrier.
I didn't build this US, so there is a lot of experience I'm lacking, so =
let me run my thoughts by you, and those of you with experience and =
knowledge can say whether it's good, bad, maybe, or DON'T!!!!!!
To minimize cutting the fabric, I have considered making some cuts along =
the leading edge and clamping a 1 X 3 or 4 with no knots to it to =
prevent the tube from kinking. Then carefully bend this unit past =
straight, loosening the clamps, re-clamping and rebending, etc., until =
the leading edge tube is straight again. The aileron repair I thought =
might work is to splice a new tube to replace the bent section, using =
two short pieces of tubing where the i.d. of the short pieces anchoring =
each end is about equal to the o.d. of the replaced section and slipped =
over the stubs of the bent section and the straight new piece, and =
fastening with rivets or epoxy.
The inside wing end I have considered opening the fabric and seeing =
about just replacing the piece that's bent, or the entire thing, if that =
would be simpler.
As for the receiver for the folding wing drilled bolt, I don't know if =
there would be any structural damaged involved, and may re-shape the =
folded wing "carrier" rather than mess with the wing at that point if =
it's not necessary.
Again, I didn't build this plane and I know that many of you will have =
knowledge, suggestions and cautions I never thought about, so let it =
fly!!
Thanks in advance for your help and advice; most of you I've had =
previous contact with seem to be friendly and respectable folks!! I'm =
attaching a few photos so that what I've written can be more easily =
understood and commented upon.

I suspect Lar created that fictitious dude, even opened a Matronics
account in his name
just so's he could find out who loved him... hehehe
Since my entry precipitated all that calamity, here's an update:
The hiccup that got my attention was the hose blowing coolant on
my ignition parts. There would have been no indication of problems
before that event so I don't feel guilty about that.
I started looking for a decent nesting spot right away but didn't notice
the temp for about a minute. I didn't have a stopwatch going but
not a lot of time elapsed before shutdown. Yesterday I refilled it with
clean oil and ran it for a few minutes. -Seemed pretty smooth
on a pull through afterward. Compression felt ok.
It flew out ok, so there is hope, time will tell.

To All:
Just got done with four days of flying in Florida. I went to the lake house
I bought in Winter Haven a few months ago. I am still in the planning stages
but I still go down there every week or so to check the house and mow the
grass. It was hot but calm much of the time.
I managed to take a trip up to Lake Jesse and stop at Jack Brown's Seaplane
School. It was fun to plop into the lake and taxi up to the beach for a visit
at the place that I got my rating a few years ago. Winter Haven is a great
place if you have floats because there are so many lakes that you are always in
glide range of one.
It is really fun to tie the Firefly down in the back yard on the beach and
just head out any time you want.
It is amazing to see how much attention the Firefly gets even if it is in the
middle of big fancy planes.
And Yes John, I got one of those fancy power inflatable life vest.

Richard
I have been out of touch for a week now, that's why I didn't respond till
now.
I have a 4 into1 exhaust system that I think makes the exhaust noise fairly
quiet with the prop noise being the major factor but I have never heard it
fly bye. I did have a glass packed motorcycle muffler on it at one time and
it cut the power way too much and didn't help the noise much. I will just
have to get my plane down to the Kolb Homecoming so that you can hear it and
make your own decision. The Valley guys tend to run with four short exhaust
stacks and that does make allot of noise but they do perform. I think the 4
to 1 produces more power if it is done right. I bought a dune buggy system
that I cut and welded up to fit being careful to not change the pipe lengths
much. I still have the baffled muffler that came with the original system
that I would be happy to donate to your project. It was just too heavy for
my tastes.

Group,
In the Rotax engine manual for my 447 it says to put 3 cm of preservation
oil into the carb and run briefly before shut down if you dont plan to run
it for at least a week to 4 weeks. I have not been doing this and feel it is
more important than ever with mandatory alchohol in our gas here. What do
you use for preservation oil? Will Marvel Mystery oil serve the purpose??
Any suggestions?
