912 installation manual calls for a fuel fliter with a mesh size .1 mm
between the tank and the fuel pump. Where did you find the fuel fliter with
the .1 mm mesh size?
I'd like to know your thoughts on gasolators and the brands you use. I can
not put one in the lowest point of the fuel system, it seems to me that one
anywhere would trap water as long as it runs through it. Is there something
I don't understand.
Thanks,
David

David K/Gang:
Water is heavier than gasoline. If you pull fuel off the top of the
tank, water remains in the tank. Pull it out of the bottom of the
tank and it will then go through the gascolator, which can be drained
periodically.
I have a homemade gascolator. Fuel tank outlet is in the lowest part
of my fuel tank. Everything comes out of that hole. Even the last
drop of fuel. From the outlet I loop the fuel line under the tailboom
and back to the Facet Fuel Pump. At the lowest point of the loop, I
installed a "T". From the "T", I run a line forward to the lowest
point in my fuselage, which is between the gear legs. I have a Briggs
and Stratton nylon valve at the end of the line just prior to a 90 deg
fitting and short piece of fuel line to exit the bottom of the
fuselage. It is right next to the vent line from the top of the tank
that vents out the bottom of the fuselage. Water and contaminants
collect in the fuel line that lays in the keel of the airplane.
I have been using a Purolator Fuel Filter, same one, since 1984 on my
Ultrastar. Uses nylon mesh filters.
This is the filter:
http://www.midwayautosupply.com/searchby.asp?txtSearch=Purolator&select1=mfg
I did replace the glass cylinder with a piece of aluminum tubing of
the same size. First night it was on the Ultrastar the glass cylinder
cracked and I lost six gals of gas. I may have overtightened it, or
it may have been a defective glass part. However, was not going to
take another chance of it cracking. I believe John W flies with the
same filter, glass cylinder and all.

When John's 912 heads west and he puts a two cylinder John Deere
engine on the Kolb, that's when he will really need some vortex
generators.
That would sound better than a Harley twin poppin overhead.

Guess I could go with the 1937 JD B. It has a 149 cu in two cyl.
Runs good too. A little heavy though. Probably need VGs top and
bottom of everything.
BTW: It would sound good. Running a straight SS stack on it now.
Have to wear ear plugs when I work it hard.

John,
<<Did your homebuilt fly?>>
In my imagination I flew all over the Western Front along side Rickenbacker.
We showed those dirty Huns a thing or two. Incidentally, part of my inspiration
came from the fact that just two years before, Lindberg and the Spirit of St.
Louis flew directly over our house on his good will tour of the states. Can
still see it in my old mind.
I threw in the pic of the Jr. because I'm impressed with the simillarity to our
late model Kolbs. Homer should go down as one of our best U.S. aircraft designers.
Where did you do your for pay jumping? We share something there. I'm sending
to your e-mail address a note about some of mine.

Hi Russ,
We had our disagreements and pissing match on the list months ago, but shortly
afterwards you took the time to email me and send me some really good advice about
trim tabs on my MK-III. I figure anyone that can get over a disagreement
on the list to help a fellow Kolber out has got to be a pretty descent guy.
I am not going to get drawn into the current dispute with Max. And even though
I am not thrilled about you linking my name with Max, I am not going to take
you apart . I appreciate the good advice you sent, it helped me make an important
building decision and thats what this list is really all about.

Ray/Gang:
Went through Jump School at Fort Campbell, KY, 48 years ago. Was
assigned to Co D, 2d Abn BG, 187th Inf, 101st Abn Div. Jumped for 9
years. Then got my first "leg" assignment when I returned to the
States from the 5th SFG in VN. A couple years into the "leg"
assignment my dream to fly was fulfilled when I got orders for Rotary
Wing Training.
First flight in an airplane was an Aeronca Champ. Probably 1945 or
1946. My oldest brother had returned from WWII and the Navy. Used
his VA to get a private ticket. I was 6 or 7 years old. That ride
sparked my desire to fly that never went away, even to this day.
Next flight was after AIT at Ft Carson, CO, 1958, on a DC3 (civilian
C-47 Goonie Bird). We got weathered down in Indiana or Illinois, and
bused the rest of the way to Ft Campbell, KY. Up until the time I
went to Jump School, I had made two takeoffs and landings as a
passenger. For the next two years at Ft Campbell, I made a lot of
takeoffs and very few landings in an airplane. I liked jumping and
jumped every chance I got. Never got into sky diving. Could not
afford it back then. All my jumps I got paid for.
Used a hand deployed parachute twice since flying ULs. Both times
that parachute worked just as good as the old Army T-10 parachutes
did.
Take care,
john h

Of course, and drive a car too. The airlines don't advertise it, but

Yeah, Brother Possum... and furthermore, when the difference is
expressed as a percentage of the totals, you're clearly gaining on me...
You're gonna love geezerhood.... let me the second to welcome you...
right after your urologist....
Thinking about this list of Brother Fackler's... and reflecting on the
biggest difference between a 65 horse Aeronca and the Firefly... The 7AC
definitely "flew" on the wing and not on the engine... Every time I fly
the Firefly, can't help but get the impression that it is almost the
exact opposite -- it climbs like hell whether the ball is in the middle
or not. Personally, that wing v.s. power perception about any given
airplane is probably the single most defining characteristic stuck in my
head when walking away from one... And it makes sense that a machine
with stingy power will tend to force a student to learn more, faster...
and have a better feel for what is happening under his butt...
Ah, the good 'ol days...
If Airport Manatee isn't flooded tomorrow, will go insult the rotax
until it caves in and permits some limited aviation.

My first airplane ride, at age 12 was in a Curtiss Condor, a big (to
me) twin engine BIPLANE. I can remember being helped up the steps and
into the wicker seats, Think it had 10, maybe 12 seats. Ride cost $3,
lasted maybe 20 mins. Not many passengers.1935 was still The Great
Depression. Afterwards the Pilot took a few minutes to answer some of
my zillion questions, and pointed out the many various gages. I told
him I made balsa wood flying model airplanes and wanted to grow up
and be a pilot. He said he still wasn't grown up yet!

And Wiley Post, famous pilot, round-the-world flyer, had only one
eye. John Hauck, two eyes, flew right up to the very spot where Post
and his famed passenger, humorist Will Rogers, fatally crashed at Pt
Barrow Alaska, 1935. That makes this Kolb-attuned.

FireFlyers & Kolbers,
I have finished Bing leaning out studies for the Victor 1+. Basically, I
have been able to validate the fuel consumption curve provided by Speedwing,
the North American engine distributor for Simonini. When I can keep the EGT
up the engine walks the line. I do not believe it is possible to fly my
engine and obtain the fuel flow rates that Simonini publishes.
I have added an update to the bottom of:
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly121.html
The next problem is how to keep the EGT up without having to fool around
with the needle, shims and clip, and do it while in the air. I am going to
revisit variable pressure reduction over the float bowl.

I hope all had a good July 4th. Big family gathering here at my daughter's
house. Typically, I do a flyby but the weather was horrible. But the sun
broke through and opened a thirty minute window, and so I got to fly.

Jack, I have most of the important parts for a Dial-A -Jet kit in my
garage, and just reading between the lines of what you are doing, if you
could run a way to adjust the Dial-A-Jet while in flight, (Old
speedometer cable?) you might be able to get your mixture to do what you
want.
Send me your address and I'll box it up and send it to you, it's yours
if you want it.
Here are some details of the thing -
