Not necessarily. In fact, most of my rigging is on dirt, grass, or ???. It's a rare occasion when I rig on asphalt or other flat surface. The stand does jess fine, thank yew, on just about any surface. It doesn't have to be exactly straight up and down. Dag nab-it son, now I nowed wear i readed that kinda-ritin! In 1969 I had the wonderful pleasure of visiting your fine state for a little Uncle Sam R and R. I't seems like the government saw fit to bless your fine state with a bunch of Northern boys for a stay at Fort Polk (hell hole of the U.S.A.). I was honored with new cloths, three squares, bedding, an M-1 (all the good guns 14 and 16 were goin to Nam), and clean socks and boots. I spent many a day and night in the mess hall runnin the buffer machine and aligning salt and pepper shakers on the tables, for some unknown reason. Fort Polk was closed after WW-II and it wasn't quite up to snuff when they reopened it for us new boys. But they did set up some GP medium tents about 10 clicks from the mess hall and with our back packs filled to the brim, like we were intending to go somewhere in a hurry, our D.I's quickly amassed us in formation, so to make sure there wasn't nobody a-missin and would thereby be malnourished. We then ran to breakfast and dinner each day to enjoy the 16 minutes of dining pleasure available. For our "in-field" lunch, it was served from prepackaged "K-ration", sill avaliable after Korea and WW-II. Love the cigs. and always to this day carry a pocket P-38 opener. I'm sorry, government, if your a readin this, I owe you for one I took from my mes kit. I vividly remember with great fondbess the packet of crackers that some how made it from the manufacturer, to the packager and through the militray aquision facilities and out to us in the field, still intact! For 10 weeks plus one (hell week), I was honored to meet some of the finest human beings in the world, and they was from your fine state. As a matter of fact, between the cagins and the coonasses, I didn't have many other friends. They all had bouey knives and hated the New England boys (all of the New England states). They said cause they talked to fast and way to funny. They considered it an insult to have to listen to them talk. Now there are probably more Northerners in your fine state than there are natives speakin like you do. To wrap this story up, I then left your beautiful state: sleeping in tents, running everywhere, sweating and grunting and hurting, without enough time to even think (I think they wanted it that way), and then flew (this is a web site about flying) to beautiful Fort Sam Houston, in Tex. via TTA, Trans Texas Airlines, or as we referred to them "Tree Top Airlines" where you don't need no entertainment other than watching the rivets vibrate lose and fly through the air from the wings of our poorly maintained, but under Government contract DC3's. These mighty machines filled to the brim with troops was heading to the Medical facility "on the hill" at Fort Sam. At Fort Sam, we had brand new barricks, two men to a room, air conditioned, and carpeted, with windows all around and fine Doctors teaching us new medics the wear-a-bouts of the body innards. Evenings off, weekends were ours and the PX had lots of goodies for us to spend our "over-paid" income on. I still remember every moment awake in Fort Polk, but can't recall much from Fort Sam. I would never trade that time for any other experience in the world. I also, in the same breath would ask the good Lord to make sure I never need to experience that experience again. Anyone that served in the military knows what I am talking about. Not the service time, just the basic training. And for them spell-checker fans, I ententionally misspelllled some of the wurds in this to pay homage to my brother in Louisiana! Armed and dangerous, well trained and over equipped Ralph of Ohio! Oh well. You know since this board isn't doing a great deal right now I thought I put in a little plug for our beloved Kolb line. I think if anyone ever needs to know if TNK Company is a good company to deal with, there is certainly a bunch written here as testimony. My ramblings will be more about the plane line; Ultra, Fire, MK. and the others. I guess I'm not much different than any other man (I can't speak for the women), in always looking at other planes, "eye candy". It seems like from day one after acquiring the thing you couldn't live without, you see or hear of other better, faster, cleaner, cheaper planes or what-have-you's. It never fails, then being a man, you look , like, desire, need , demand and then posses. that's our make-up. Here I am after 11 flights in m Firestar and still looking on Barnstormers for that ...."God only knows what". I mean, after all, there isn't any way on Gods green earth that I know half the things this Kolb can do, or me with it. And I haven't been able to "wean" myself from that site. Every day, like getting up, I go look there for, again "God Knows what". But yesterday was different, and this morning I did pretty good. I didn't visit Branstormers until late mid afternoon. Why, a few more weeks of this persistence, and continued sessions with my phicitrist, and I won't even remember what the name of that site was. Also yesterday, I took my camera with me. I took 10 or 12 (large 1 meg ) pictures of the area around my field, as I ventured out past the point where a man should fall off the edge of the earth, 5 to 7 miles range. Like a new Eaglet booted out of the nest, I flapped and flapped and grew ever increasingly more confident of my new ability to fly and "remember " where the field was. I still remember the first 3 or 4 times up for instructions, I lost the field every time, and all we were doing in retrospect was making a square circle! Now I'm up with stick in hand throttle at 5400 RPM, flying level and straight in attitude. Hit the"on" button, wait for the lens to pop out and aim. Now something advertised in the Kolb catalog that I read time and time again, but didn't recognize that it would be a rarity in most planes. Ready? Are you on the edge of your seat sweating in great wonder if he will ever tell? "GREAT VISIBILITY" the advertisement says for Firefly, Firestar, Kolbra, Mark III Classic, Mark III Extra and Slingshot! Now I understand something about flying that I didn't even consider before, because I expected it in any airplane....Great Visibility! I could take a picture for others from most any angle in the plane, but for me the pilot (driver to the ultra light people), "I HAVE great visibility. I think that make the Kolb line of planes the premium line. Enclosed yet open. What a feeling, It wasn't anywhere that good in the Challenger, and most assuredly not that good in a Cessna anything. What a view. If only the world knew our little secret, everyone would be flying. Can you remember finding that great little restaurant, with the great service, food and prices. Your own little secret. Well do you? And what did you do? You went and told all your friends! Now they make you take a number, pay high prices and slow service. Therefore...DO NOT TELL ANYONE HOW MUCH YOU LIKE FLYING! But if you slip and do tell your most intimate friends, tell them only in a Kolb! I can see Everybodys house from up here, in Ohio, Ralph Do not archive the ramblings of an old man! Calling it rig or fold doesn't change anything but may make some folk feel better -- I was told at the TNK factory that one chap 'unfolds" in 6 minutes! -- that's a goal for me. I flew it initially with the 5gal tank and after installing the 10gal tank I couldn't tell any difference in the way it handled. It's pretty much right under the CG, so it didn't cause any undesired changes in handling. I carry another 2 gals in the aft V.... no problem.
