you could also "ghost ride" it, like when we'd jump off our bikes and see
how far they would go without a driver.>>
Hi, that brings back old memories. A friend and I used to take his old flat
tank Sunbeam motorbike, which was old even in those days and start the
engine and set it off down the runway of a disused airfield. It would slowly
turn and take off across the grass, wobbling and eventually fall over,
usually on the runway. Crunch. Straighten things out and do it again!
When I think what that bike would be worth today.......

Hi Thom,
unless I am reading this wrongly you have to go through Master OFF position,
which kills the engine, when you check left mag and then right mag. That
can`t be right surely?

Wind forward of wingtips - stick into wind (tail dragger and tricycle Gear).
Wind aft of wingtips - forward stick away from wind (tail dragger).
aft stick away from wind (tricycle gear).
It's intuitive and obvious with the wind forward of the wing tips. Once it is
aft of the wingtips, you need to picture the control surface positions - you'll
see why then.

Hi Pat. In the Cessnas I fly, from all the way counter clockwise and
turning the key clockwise, it's Both Off, 1 off, the other off, both on,
start. Can't remember offhand if it's Off, Right Mag, Left Mag.....or Left
Mag, Right Mag. Lar. Do not Archive.

Dave,
This is not good advice for a Kolb. Propeller air flow does not influence
the horizontal stabilizer but the wind does. You want to hold the tail
down or stick back when taxiing downwind, especially in grass. With a
high thrust line, it is very easy to put the FireFly on its nose in grass
with the wind coming from behind.

Pat,
The only position in which the master is off is the first positiion (most counter
clockwise) which is also the only position in which the key can be inserted
or removed. And the rest of the list is in clockwise order from there, as Big
Lar said.
In my opinion its only redeeming quality is that it saves panel space and the GA
certified ones are not cheap. I like the "old world" way better, certainly not
for everything, but in this, for sure.

Pat
Switch positions were OFF-LEFT-RIGHT-BOTH. We start on LEFT (which
has a spark retard built in), go to BOTH when she starts; for a mag-
check switch from BOTH to LEFT, listen; then back to BOTH. Same for
right mag. No need to go thru OFF -- you'll blow jugs on a big engine
that way.
Should be no need to work 3-4 controls at once when starting!

Russ,
With separate switches, there is no need to "work 3-4 controls at once when starting!".
On our Allegro there are three switches. The keyed master/starter switch
has three positions as follows:
OFF (master off)
ON (master on)
Start (master on, engage starter) momentary contact
Next to it are two separate mag switches, each with an ON position (up) and OFF
position (down), which are guarded.
To start, flip on both mags (for Rotax 912) then start using the keyed master/start
switch, just like a Cessna.
Both systems work fine. They are just different, but not in function or ease of
use.

What Jack says might be ok for grass but I wouldn't advise stick back with wind
behind... elevators up... if it's blowing very hard. That could get you on your
nose on pavement, especially since Kolb's don't have a lot of weight on the
tail wheel with front gear set back more than normal. I always follow the normal
stick positioning in wind with my FF and have never had a problem, but I
haven't flown much from grass strips, so what Jack says might be valid for there,
I don't know.

Stupid question were in the cooling system do you take the temp.
reading for a EIS probe? After the radiator or before? I also saw that
some company was selling premade temp sensor couplings in a past issue

know what issue had the add?

The 912 has two nipples to attach the sensors to. If you got the same EIS as
I do then you'll notice they are much to big to fit on the nipples and have
the wrong type of attachment. No problem just unscrew the silver nut that
holds the nipples onto the engine and put them under there. And screw them
back on. If you need a photo let me know.

Subject: | Fuel Flow when running your Fuel Pump |

I just hooked up my fuel flow meter and the reading seems very high. I
thought I was carefull enough to pick the right pump so that I don't float
the carbs. Can someone tell me what fuel flow to expect when I am running my
fuel pump?
Thanks,
David

Nevermind I think I got it. Let me explain. First it's a plane being built.
I thought it was a good idea to take the fuel line that goes to the engine
put a new filter on it and run it back into the tank. Then I can use the
fuel pump to pump a couple of gallons while I checked the EIS display,
measured the fuel and pumped all the junk out of the aluminum fuel lines
that may of gotten there durring construction. When the fuel flow meter read
20 gallons per hour and the measurement came up to that screwed me up.
Once I run the fuel line through the engine the carbs will meter the fuel
flow to a normal level.

For those of us who need to get a life:
This long-forgotten story needs to be retold, as this
little-appreciated airplane made a lasting contribution to the
language. When one wishes to emphasize that a project has not lived up
to expectations, one says that one has managed to Gormley-Bulsh it.
