Hi Will,
You can't honestly believe that I find the airline security mess and the
threat to American lives funny ........... can you?
Be fair and realistic. Should pilots have to be armed? No.
Should armed pilots announce it? I think yes.
Should we as citizens / victims stick our heads in the sand and never try to
lighten our lives again because of past tragedy?
I don't think so. The audio clip was a ruse, not an actual cockpit recording
(didn't really happen).
And I NEVER said that it was ok to break the rules. I did mean however that
we should not take a superior attitude over another member. It's about
respect as much as anything. If either of the two guys that publicly
chastised Ralph disagreed with his post, they could have addressed their
concerns to him "off list". Besides, when things get to far "off center"
here on the list, Matt will put us all back on track. It is after all his
site and his rules, if he doesn't mind us occasionally supplying a little
humor then it's ok.
AND FOR THE RECORD .... I DID NOT CALL YOU A

Kolbs are aircraft, therefore any thing aircraft related, no matter how

I must agree with Chris,
Ralph has added a great deal of banter, humor, and food for thought, ect. to
this list. To become so righteous over one simple post of an audio file, is almost
silly. No, it is silly.
Yes, our list has its core purpose to share Kolb related content, no doubt. And
I would never care for this list to become a dumping ground of web files and
other crap that is floating around the internet. But a non-Kolb file once in
a while, does it really hurt that much?
I think back to some of the flight videos we have seen, Munford crash video ...
was not a Kolb, but did we not all learn something from that one?
If a member of the list gets to posting too often crap, we can rely on Matt to
hit the brakes. One or two files that share a bit of humor, with aviation, is
fine by me.
Besides, Ralph (unofficial, Judge of Kolb Dashboards gave me a 11 of 10 points,
so I am obligated to support him!)
Now, for my Kolb Content....
Hangar progress... (Manchester Kolb House) is going well.
The building panels were stored outside for the past 10 (yeah 10) years.... and
have some green fungus crap on them. A scrub brush is working well to clean
things up. Wade L loaned me a pressure washer, but the scum was just to tough,
mixed with the oil coating the panels were shipped with, and has thickened over
the years. A brush and manual labor seem to be the best attack to clean it
up.
Nearly finished cleaning, and will start assembly soon, next weekend if the weather
stays nice. Purchased some scaffolding on eBay for the erection of the
building, arrived yesterday. A great deal I think, if you need some, BadgerLadder.com
was the site. So soon things will hopefully be shaping up. See pic if
you care, if not, dont waste your download bandwidth.
Hope all have a great weekend...

Not too excited about all the asides; some just bore me, and usually I am
viewing the list to learn more about getting the red recalcitrant Kolb
safely airborne and back again with me aboard and packing, but packing
camera or cameras when upstairs. Found long ago that there is this little
gadget built in computer programs called "Delete" a cousin to the "Blab off"
or "Mute" button on the TV to allay the unwanted. It works. I use it.
That aside; on a flight from Nairobi to Addis Ababa, I learned the
Ethiopian, trim, green-jacketed guys who checked my luggage carefully and
visually also carried it to the plane then flew to Addis with us as
stewards. A few weeks before, I learned, a "terr'ist" tried to take over one
of their planes and they merely carved him to pieces.
Wonder, Russ, what a .22 hp would do passing through the aluminum and how
that might effect depressurization of a 757 at 35 grand...? I don't know
too many airline pilots who are trained with weapons and I haven't met any
of the sky marshals, that I know of. Not sure what they pack, or what their
groundrules are on type bullets or calibers or use.
Now, should I fly the Mark III with that gigantic vertical trim removed or
not? Taxied and hot taxied and seemed like I had some rudder effect on the
ground without the 12x7" hunk of bent aluminum on the tail...? What's the
worst scenario?

Everyone,
Yeah, I think that we all exercise our "Delete" key from time to time but
I'll tell you from my perspective that even the stuff that each individual
finds irritating to them sometime is thought provoking ..... and the
exchanges that we have on the Kolb list (except the ones that turn nasty)
are healthy and over all achieve a "balance" here.
I have been "straightened out" more than once here on the list and I'm still
here ... giving it and taking it.
I just felt compelled to speak in Ralph's defense because I know that he was
just trying to share with his fellow Kolbers and in no way meant to "defy
the rules" or offend anyone.
I don't have to agree with you to respect your opinion (or at very least
your right to have your own opinion).
All that being said, let's get back to Kolb (and other airplane stuff)
PS. Ralph please feel free to send that kind of stuff to me off line anytime

Plaincrazzy,
I had one of the dynamic vibration dampeners on ( ready for this?), a Harley. Didn't
do squat. They will offset and correct for minimal amount of dynamic disturbance,
Ie:pulley balance, transient and transmitted intermittent vibration.
Remember they use a small amount of mercury in a track around the circumference
that is contained within a diameter. In hearing about them, the theory sounds
really great but not worth the money. MHO. Something about equal and opposite
forces canceling out each other. They have to be equal, and you wont feel the
small amount that the mercury offsets. The opposite is somewhat true because
the mercury seeks to go opposite of the heavy side, like a tire balancing weight,
always seeking the opposite at what ever speed.
There used to be a Company in Worthington, Ohio that did industrial dynamic and
static balance monitoring for electric motors, pumps, gear boxes and other rotational
equipment. I had a friend that worked there and their equipment could
see the effects of this type balancing. It was masked, not corrected for.
Perhaps someone has had a different experience than the above. Sometimes when I
have spent good hard earned money to buy a pig in a poke, I wanted so bad for
it to work, that I convinced myself that it did. Even when it didnt!
As they say, its your money.
Ohio Ralph

You might try it without the rudder trimtab. My Firestar doesn't have or
need one, a Mark III that I owned for a while did not have or need one. By
all means leave it off if you can. The worst that is going to happen is that
you will have to hold some right rudder to keep going straight.

Header changed to reflect topic - you might try putting a piece of yarn at
the base of your windscreen in the center, when the trim tabs on the rudder
& ailerons are correct, the yarn will blow straight up the screen with very
little rudder input.
PS - if the yarn or windscreen is dusty, the yarn will buff a smudge into
the Lexan.

Hello Gang,
I monitor this list every day and have been a member longer than the
majority on here. Of course John Hauck, Ted Cowan, Bro. Pike, Big Lar,
R.
Neilsen and a few others have been here longer but I think you see where
I=92m
coming from. I have seen a lot of these type situations escalate further
than they need to.
I feel compelled to add my 2 cents as I don=92t post very often and this
thread has approached the =93ugly=94 level by some of the replies after
John
Williamson=92s response. I also know by some of the responses that those
individuals do not know John or they would not have said some of the
things
that were said, some of which were down right uncalled for. I really
hate to
see the list get so torn up with all the nasty reply=92s that wind up
with
people getting =93chips on their shoulders=94 towards each other.
I know John=92s response sounded a little strong, but what if each of us
posted something that was not Kolb related each day or several times a
day.
Soon the list would be all about jokes and urban legends and have very
little Kolb content. I understand what my delete key is for but if I
have to
use it numerous times on the Kolb list then the list is loosing its
usefulness.
You have to admit that John was right and has a point. Maybe some folks
took it the wrong way, and that is a serious shortcoming of email list,
because I have had the pleasure of meeting and associating with John and
I
know that he did not intend to =93cross threads=94 with anyone as he is
one of
the nicest people I have had the pleasure of meeting. He is also one of
the
most aviation knowledgeable folks that I know (admittedly not many) and
his
expertise is very valuable to this list (in my opinion).
An easy solution to this dilemma is for folks to build them a mail list
of
folks that enjoy this kind of humor and share it with each other.
Another
list member (Paul Petty) sends me stuff all the time in this manner and
doesn=92t clutter the list with it. I get it along with about 30 other
folks.
Another thing (as mentioned by R. Neilsen recently) that has been lost
and
folks need to try and remember to do is the =93Do not Archive=94. If
this is
not in the post somewhere then it goes into the archives and there has
been
a lot going into the archives that does not need to and you can imagine
what
this does to someone searching for info. I am guilty of this too so I
am
putting this shoe on my foot also.
P.S. I am not the Kolb list police nor am I taking sides. I just enjoy
the
list and would like to see everyone get along. No problem with
disagreements, but sometimes it goes too far.
=93Do not archive=94
Peace and Goodwill to Everyone,
John Cooley

Thanks Larry, exactly what I thought, I was holding a heavy foot of right
rudder before I got the red one trimmed over time. Dennis in ABQ said if I
were still holding right rudder with that trim tab on, it should probably be
turned to the opposite direction. Makes sense. So I took it off as an
intermediate step. One friend who runs Intermountain Air in SLC, Utah, an
A&P, builder and really knowledgeable guy, Arnie Richins, said a beveled
length of balsa taped to vertical trailing edge of rudder with "fat" edge
back would be a good test and could be added easily to whichever side needed
it and even painted to match if it became a permanent fixture.

Richard,
Been flying the Kolb since day one with the tattletale, and at speed, seems
pretty much centered. Slow flight, I can tell wind directions. Didn't note
anything particularly aberrant with it, though.
Thanks,
Indicated what I am planning as next step in a separate post. .
The Kolb Mark III is slowly become what some of you guys say they can be,
What an experience to take a messed up one and bring it back to life.

Subject: | Bing Throttle Slide Repair |
--> Kolb-List message posted by: "Jack B. Hart" <jbhart@onlyinternet.net>
Kolbers,
To improve fuel flow performance consistency, I installed the strongest throttle
return spring that Bing offers. After 25 hours, low speed throttle setting
became unstable. For example, I would start the engine and begin my taxi out
to the engine warm up area. The engine would be turning about 2,000 rpm but a
slight nuge to the throttle would send engine speed up to over 3,000 rpm. If
one retarded the throttle a trifle, the engine rpm would drop to or below 2,000
rpm. The throttle acted just fine at flight engine speeds, but low engine
speeds made for interesting taxiing to and from the runway.
Upon taking the slide from the carburetor, I found significant wear on the
inside of the slide where the spring bumped and wore the pot metal away.
The grooves were so deep that the spring could not expand smoothly up and
down over the grooves. This is what was causing the low engine speed
problem.
I repaired the slide for less than five dollars. The first flight test
showed that the repair improved low speed throttle performance. At this
time I have to build many more hours to see what the slide will look like
after 25 additional hours.
If anyone would like to see the problem and how it was fixed, I added an
update to the bottom of:
http://www.thirdshift.com/jack/firefly/firefly121.html
Had a nice cool flight today. Farmers were harvesting soybeans and corn.

It was a Great Fall Day Flying in Maine I left this morning to Go to a
Fly-in in the southern part of the state I ended up puting on 179 miles and burnt
10.4 Gallons and 6 take Offs and Landings one fuel stop the air was refreshing
the view was spectacular ( always From a KOLB) the leaves are at about 75%
colors here now and dont you know all I had for a camera was the Cell phone and
that is not really anything to talk about as far as a Quality pitcure.
on the way home in the evening it was real nice to have the full inclosier
installed and the Cabin heat on the air was as smooth as silk hands off flying
so I kicked back and had a cold drink of water and a cigar on the way back and
enjoying the wide screen movie ahead of me and I had the best seat in the
house.
When I got back in my neiborhood I was there just in time to fly around and
check all the fields for big Bucks thinking I probably should have been home
sooner so I could have Gone Bow hunting for the evening but then again I
didnt get skunked flying anyway. Tomorrow I am going to go Try out a FireFly for
an older Guy I met a while ago He doesnt want to try it untill I take it up
and tell him what the numbers are and make sure it's all trimmed up for him,
actully I am looking forward to it I bet it's going to be fun

Subject: Kolb-List: Kolb List
It was a Great Fall Day Flying in Maine I left this morning to Go to
a Fly-in in the southern part of the state I ended up puting on 179
miles and burnt 10.4 Gallons and 6 take Offs and Landings one fuel stop
the air was refreshing the view was spectacular ( always From a KOLB)
the leaves are at about 75% colors here now and dont you know all I had
for a camera was the Cell phone and that is not really anything to talk
about as far as a Quality pitcure.
on the way home in the evening it was real nice to have the full
inclosier installed and the Cabin heat on the air was as smooth as silk
hands off flying so I kicked back and had a cold drink of water and a
cigar on the way back and enjoying the wide screen movie ahead of me and
I had the best seat in the house.
When I got back in my neiborhood I was there just in time to fly
around and check all the fields for big Bucks thinking I probably
should have been home sooner so I could have Gone Bow hunting for the
evening but then again I didnt get skunked flying anyway. Tomorrow I am
going to go Try out a FireFly for an older Guy I met a while ago He
doesnt want to try it untill I take it up and tell him what the numbers
are and make sure it's all trimmed up for him, actully I am looking
forward to it I bet it's going to be fun
