some top-of-wing spoilers. They were anywhere from 2-4 in. high, and at
least 4 ft long, cushioned on bottom with either
salvaged styrofoam, old pcs of carpet, or under-carpet padding.>>
Hi,
used to do that on the old Dagling and Zogling type gliders in the early
days when we used to bungee launch. In the early instruction phase the lift
killers were slid onto the leading edge and the guy under instruction was
dragged across the field by half a dozen other students while the instructor
ran alongside shouting .
Mind you, the damn things would hardly lift off even without the lift
killers but it was a safeguard if there was a sudden gust of wind.
If you made them right they doubled as leading edge supports when the wing
was stacked away at the end of the session.

Hello list,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience or suggestions for cutting the hardened
steel axles? I want to trim off about 1 1/2" that sticks out the inside
of the axle sockets. It is serving no real purpose and is dead weight. It
is also something to just snag on something in the event of a less than optimum
landing surface.
I know from drilling, this stuff is hard. Not sure if I can cut it with portable
bandsaw that I use for just about everything else. Don't want to try something
that will just scar the axle up.
Thanks for any help.

Air powered die grinder with a cutoff disc on it. -sometimes called
an exhaust cutoff tool. Check Harbor Freight or any chinese tool
vendor. Also good for smoothing unwanted or lumpy welds.

Hi John,
What I would try and will try, because I have the same problem, is using a 4
1/2 electric grinder with a thin metal cutting blade on it. I used this on
the hardened gear legs when building them (John Hauck style), and a bunch of
other metal parts, and I think it will cut the axles with no problem also.
Good luck.

cutting the hardened steel axles?
|
| John Bickham
Morning John B
I cut MATCO axles with a hack saw. Buy the best bi-metal blades
available. Usually, they cost about three times as much as the
regular cheap blades. I have one in my hack saw now that has been in
there for many years. Either it is a good blade, or I am not sawing
much now days. ;-)
I do not know how hard MATCO heat treats their axles, but they are not
that hard. I also drill them with a certain amount of success.

Aren't these for the purpose of jacking/propping up the plane when you take
a wheel off? I've always found them useful for that.

I've got my plane back in the garage for Winter ( MN )
One thing that I'll be working on is a full enclosure....
My personal favorite design is making it in sections.....
that way things can be replaced cheaply.... my main front piece will be
2 ft x 4 ft , Then I can add doors ( removable )....I'll have to make a frame
to bow out the doors a little.
I think it will waste less lexan that way too....
I'm just gonna pick up some stuff from Fleet Farm...

You can still jack up your plane where the axle comes out of the cage...
( I pulled off my bent axle to straighten it )
Also if you use a cut -off wheel ( recomended ) just have a wet rag on the axle
piece so you don't heat it up too bad..... and cool it down as soon as your
done.....

I just bought a small sheet of lexan ( the real stuff ) from Fleet Farm.
A sheet 34" x 44" cost me $49.99 , after I make frames for the front three sections
( Front and both doors ), it'll be easy to replace a piece if needed....

--> Kolb-List message posted by: "John Bickham" <gearbender@bellsouth.net>
I know I'm asking a lot of questions. There is a lot of experience on this list
and a good resource for getting ideas on doing things right the first time.
I was looking at the pictures from Copperstate of the Milows planes. The graphics
and paint schemes are amazing work. I'm a true novice when it comes to painting.
I can mask off straight lines and paint that. The desert scene on Uncle
Craigs plane has me wondering how he did that.
How and what do you use to stencil graphics and lettering? I know I can buy vinyl
lettering and just stick it on. I don't think I'll be able to match the Stits
Pumpkin Orange that I use so I would like to paint some lettering on the
nose cone.
Can you get a masking material that you can cut out the lettering and stick on
Aerothane without damaging it?
Thanks for any help.

It's not that hard to do amazing paint if you are willing to spend the
time to do the masking. These planes are the first things Milo Tim and I
have painted with Aero-thane. The time it takes to do all the back
masking is phenomenal. My hat is off to any one with paint schemes like
John hawk and similar designs. Although fun, if you like that sort of
thing, it's very satisfying when it is finished. For graphics we used
kitchen cupboard self adhesive paper. We did the graphic design and cut
them with an Ex-acto knife then applied it to the surface, masked around
it and then applied paint. Just remember if it is aero-thane you must
sand all the little details on the mask or the paint will not stick to
the underling color
Have fun building your plane

--> Kolb-List message posted by: Lanny Fetterman <donaho@csrlink.net>
Hi All, I just got home from a trip to Frederick Md, I took the repairman
course and passed the test, now I can do my own annuals on the any ELSA I
own. Thank goodness that is over!
We kicked around the subject of the primer bulb, and they convinced me to
take it out of the system, and install a facet fuel pump in parallel with
the mechanical pump. I checked the archives and found information as to
which pump to buy. If anyone has pictures of their installation they could
post, or any suggestions before I start this project, I would appreciate
the help.
I read that the pump should be placed below the level of the fuel tanks,
is that where you fellows put it? Is it best to wire it to the ignition
switch so it runs all the time, as suggested by one of the other pilots
taking the course, or a toggle switch? Thank you in advance. Lanny

Use a .040 thick cut of wheel in a 4 inch grinder that will do a quick job of
that for you

IMO the fuel pump should have a relay activated from the ignition
circuit to avoid
problems. That is the only relay I have.
