I believe 4130 streamline struts were already in place. I do remember the first two things we changed on the original FS was gear legs and lift struts. We went to .090 wall 4130 X 1" and heat treated to 42 Rockwell. I got the Rockwell number from Maxair. Experience dictated harder heat treating and larger diameter legs the next year. Still using the same material and numbers for the gear legs on my mkIII. john h mkIII ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 07:38:42 AM PST US From: David Downey Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Original FS Fuel Tank Upgrade I would also like to see the images if they are out there. This tank was baffled internally, pulled fuel from the bottom rear, lowest point of tank, through a finger strainer. Fueled from the rear through an inlet made up of pvc and brass plumbing parts. This tank worked great in all areas except a small leak in the bottom rear that was not detected until after installation. This tank was not sloshed. Had we sloshed it, like we did the 25 gal aluminum tank in my mkIII, we probably would not have had any leakage problems. Soon as I get a chance I will dig through old photos and see what I can find. john h mkIII ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 08:35:23 AM PST US From: "pat ladd" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: thanks everyone for the pictures I intend to look into the electric kit for the carbs. is anyone running them? > Hi, we have a version that heats the carb itself available here. no switching on and off as it is on all the time. Cheers Pat ________________________________ Message 10 ____________________________________ Time: 08:40:45 AM PST US Subject: Kolb-List: Re: Original FS Fuel Tank Upgrade From: "John Bickham" Here are some pictures of my attempt at the John/Jim Hauck fuel tank design for a Mark III. Originally I calculated 20.5 gallons. In the leak and flow test I did just before covering put 21.5 gallons in it. I worked out a size that I would only have to remove one tube to install or remove. John H's tank is a bit bigger and I think he has two tubes that he removes. Both Jim and John talked me it through it. One difference is my tank is .063". Couldn't get .050" around here. It was right after Katrina and supply/selection was pretty limited. This tank weighs 10 pounds less than my old one that only carried 12.7 gallons. Should have done it right the first time. Take it from someone who knows, if you are thinking of making long X-countries then you need at least a one hour reserve. Our planes fly at a speed that just a little bit of weather at the end of a flight can put you in a bad way. I learned the hard way. The FAR 30 minute reserve is not enough for planes that like to fly slow. John H has all the experience with this. These pictures are my humble attempt to gain from that experience. If John H has trouble finding his old pictures and you need more details let me know. I have more handy. John H did this so long ago that once he finds them he may have to take them and have them restored :D ! I have been fighting the two W's (Work and Weather) to get this painting finished. Ready for final color coats. Just happens to be foul weather on my off days for the last month. Also had few chores in there. Anxious to fly it. -------- Thanks too much, John Bickham Mark III-C "Using my Repairman Certificate" St. Francisville, LA Do Not Archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=75012#75012 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/tank_installed006_medium_923.jpg http://forums.matronics.com//files/tank_installed002_medium_180.jpg ________________________________ Message 11 ____________________________________ Time: 09:37:57 AM PST US From: "John Hauck" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Re: Original FS Fuel Tank Upgrade John H did this so long ago that once he finds them he may have to take them and have them restored :D ! | | John Bickham Hi John B: Do you know anyone that does tin-type restorations? For some reason, they did not want anything to do with us or our airplanes.
