[Please Read] Dear Listers, Who is Matt Dralle and what exactly are these Lists? Well, I've been working in the information technology industry for over 20 years primarily in computer networking design and implementation. I have also done extensive work in web development and CGI design during this period. I started the Matronics Email Lists back in 1990 with about 30 fellow RV builders from around the world. Since that time, I have added 63 other kinds of aircraft related Lists to the line up and numerous other List related services such as the Forums, Wiki, Archives and Search Engine just to name a few. For flexibility and reliability, I have chosen to run all of my own servers here locally. Other List-related systems include a 1 Gigabit, fully switched network infrastructure, a commercial-grade Netscreen firewall, a Barracuda spam filter, a local T1 Internet router, and a commercial-grade business T1 Internet connection with full static addressing. The computer servers found here include a brand new, quad-processor Xeon Linux server for List web services, a dual-processor Xeon Linux system dedicated to the email processing List functions, and another P4 Linux system serving as a remote storage disk farm for the archives, databases, and for an on-line hard drive-based backup system with 3.2 Terra Bytes of storage, soon to be upgraded to over 6 Terra Bytes! This entire system is protected by three large, commercial-grade uninterrupted power supply (UPS) systems that assure the Lists are available even during a local power outage! Speaking of power, imagine how much electricity it takes to run all of these systems. One month this Summer, I had a staggering $1368 bill for electricity alone! I recently upgraded all of the computer racking infrastructure including new power feeds and dedicated air conditioning for the room that serves as the Computer Center for the Matronics Email Lists. This year I added another rack to house the new MONSTER quad-processor web system that didn't quite fit into the first rack! Here's a composite photo of the List Computer Center before the addition of the second rack: http://www.matronics.com/MattDralle-ListComputerCenter.jpg As you can see, I take running these Lists very seriously and I am dedicated to providing an always-on, 24x7x365 experience for each and every Lister. But building and running this system isn't cheap. As I've stated before, I don't support any of these systems with commercial advertising on the Lists. It is supported 100% through List member Contributions! That means you... and you... and YOU! To that end, I hold a List Fund Raiser each November and ask that members make a small Contribution to support the continued operation and upgrade of this ever-expanding system. Its solely YOUR Contributions that keeps it running! Please make a Contribution today to support these Lists! http://www.matronics.com/contribution Or, by dropping a personal check in the mail to: Matronics / Matt Dralle PO Box 347 Livermore CA 94551-0347 USA (Please include your email address on the check!) You really should plumb the two pumps in parallel. Both the facet and the mechanical pump have built in check valves, so the failure of either pump will not affect the operation of the other. If you put the pumps in series, a failure of either pump can affect the fuel flow to the engine. You do not need a squeeze bulb with a parallel setup - in fact there have been a number of fuel starvation incidents because of squeeze bulb failures This is a controversial subject on this forum, and there are a number of Kolbers who are running the pumps in series. Consider that virtually all GA and T Category aircraft with dual tank pumps use the parallel system. That's good enough for me. The facet pump alone provides more pressure than the mechanical pump alone. Check the pumps before flight by turning on the electric pump long enough to fill the carb bowls. If you are using transparent fuel line, you will see the fuel lines fill up. Turn off the electric pump and start, taxi, and partial power run up with the mechanical pump. If it is not working, the carb bowls will run dry and the engine will quit. Turn on the electric pump before takeoff and leave it on for the entire flight. -------- Dave Bigelow Kamuela, Hawaii FS2, HKS 700E Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=77567#77567 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 05:25:31 AM PST US From: "Dana Labhart" Subject: Kolb-List: Eve in our Prayers Amen Uncle Craig! Not too long ago I walked in Eve's shoes with the loss of Norm. I know the holidays will be very saddening for her as she rolls around like a lost marble. Our prayers can help ask God to give her the strength to make it through the holidays. When I finally get a Kolb I=92ll certainly play with it. My Cessna 170 (much modified but with stock dihedral) would fly hands- off indefinitely, just keeping it straight with the rudder pedals. Would also make turns, either way, with either rudder or ailerons alone. A bit sloppy but not bad. I=92m indebted to all the Kolbers who=92ve experimented here and were willing to share their findings. Saves everyone else a lot of work, makes things easier and safer for all of us. Most interesting handling I ever experienced was an ultralight biplane flying boat, spoilers on lower wings only, no ailerons. Man, was that DIFFERENT! I finally went with using spoilers only to enter a turn, rudder only to come out of it. Unfortunately, the designer/ builder/owner never got confident enough to fly it. Sold it, and I have no idea what ever happened to it. I suspect new owner totalled it. Hope not. do not archive ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 06:48:14 PM PST US From: "Steven Green" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Facet pump thread sealer Larry, The facts: Rotax recommends putting an auxilary pump in paralell with the mechanical pump. Many put the aux pump in series and have no problems. My thoughts: 1) I do not like to run the aux pump during flight because I don't want a pump pumping fuel out in the event of an accident. 2) If the aux pump is in series and not running, the mechanical pump must reduce the pressure at its inlet enough to lift the fuel the 3 feet or so plus what ever it takes to open the check valves on the electric pump.(I plan to measure this when I do my annual this winter) Keep in mind that the distance the fuel is lifted is multiplied by the positive "G" load on the plane at that time. So everything may go well until you do a hard pull up (2 or 3 Gs) on a hot day then the gasoline could turn to vapor at the inlet to your mechanical pump. Higher altitudes will reduce the pressure on the fuel also so a problem may not show up until you are in the air on a warm day. 3) John Hauck has more hours piloting his plane than Noah had in the Ark and his aux pump is in series but keep in mind that his fuel tank is mounted about 2 feet higher than most of ours. 4) It all boils down to pressure and temperature at the inlet of the mechanical pump. 5) I used #3 permatex to seal the threads. However, some homebuilts have had blocked fuel systems caused by slivers of teflon tape. Even if there's no problem on initial installation, residue in the female threads can get pushed into the lines if the connection is opened & re-made. It doesn't take much to block a fuel injector or carb jet. Teflon tape is a no-no, small fragments can get to the carb clog things up resulting in loss of the engine. jerb At 07:06 PM 11/27/2006, you wrote: > > Hi All, My Facet pump came today, are there any suggestions > as to what I should use to seal the threads?
