Hi Malcolm,
Thats really nice but it doesn`t get over the problem of massive crowds
and a crimp in local flying at an actual air race event. The crowds
have to be seen to be believed. That is not what I was hoping for in the
middle of a desert. I was expecting to find a resonably quiet campsite
with a chance to BBQ and chat with the people on this list with whom I
have only corresponded and hopefully to scrounge a lift in someones 2
seater.
Cheers

John, I agree with Bob, It all depends on what flying skills you already
have. IMO it`s cheaper and easier to get some dual time, then it is to
replace landing gear and bent cage tubes. As they say, don`t ask me how I
know ! Lanny Fetterman N598LF

Re: High speed taxi..........they can be dangerous. It is easier in a
tricycle gear airplane. Kolbs are easy to fly for a tail dragger, but
they are still tail draggers and required caution. Some practice on a
flight simulator might help. I like the J-3 Cub on Microsoft's FS 2004
simulator.

John, In a tricycle gear airplane high speed taxiing is no big deal. In a
tail dragger, even one as nicely mannered as a Kolb, welllllllllll, hmmmm.
I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I'd go with the nays. The reason is
pretty simple. While the tires are still touching the ground a taildragger
is unstable because the CG is behind the main gear. Cross winds and ham
handed control inputs can put you out of control too quickly to recover.
Once those tires leave the ground stability returns and you are much safer.

A Letter FROM A FARM KID,
(NOW AT SAN DIEGO MARINE CORPS RECRUIT TRAINING)
Dear Ma and Pa,
I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer
the Marine
Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join
up quick before all of the places are filled.
I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6
a.m. but I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you
do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to
slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically
nothing.
Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water. Breakfast
is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but
kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and
other regular
food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that
live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you until noon when you get
fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much.
We go on "route marches," which the platoon sergeant says are long walks
to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A
"route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys
get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks.
The country is nice but awful flat . The sergeant is like a school
teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and
Colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none.
This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep
getting medals
for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk
head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at
home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You
don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.
Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to
wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break
real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about
the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver
Lake.
I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only
5'6" and 130 pounds and he's 6'8" and near 300 pounds dry.
Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers
get onto this setup and come stampeding in.
Your loving daughter,
Alice

Yeah , I've got "MY" opinion.....That DOESN'T sound good to me....
Lemme splain....
Before I "Took off" , I did some fast taxi and flew the tail.....
That's OK....But as I did a faster taxi and the plane got "light"
That wasn't a good place to be....either on the ground or in the air ....
and Two Feet ? I shot for 10....give yourself a little room.....Even with
10 your still in "ground effect" so if you climb out ....Make sure your
airspeed is good....
You could get into trouble playing around with it too close to the ground
" MY Opinion "
I have a story about my first flight ( and second ) I'll try to find them
for you.....it might be in this forum ....?

Yeah! Dont do it.
Taxi around until you are familiar with rudder, brakes and throttle. Then,
get just fast enough to just raise the tail and give youself some rudder
control. Only try it if the wind is dead ahead. If you take off get away
from the ground as quickly as possible and then only if you know how to fly.
If you can fly, go for it and get some height. Its the ground thats hard,
not the air. If you can`t fly, stay away from the plane until someone
checks you out.
I know you can do it all your own but most of the pilots who have taught
themselves to fly, and there are some on this list, do not recommend it.

Dennis, for what it's worth, if you can't find a DRE-6000, I highly recommend the
Lightspeed 25XL. Lightspeed had a yearend $50 off special on their reconditioned
25XL headset... ended 12/31. I bought one for $300... a $600 headset new.
You can't tell it from brand new, it was tested to new specs, new everything
that is replaceable like ear pieces, mike cover, carry bag, etc and it came
with a year warranty. It is an amazing headset! It is really comfy and when
you press the ANR button, quiet is the word! It is a top of the line quality
looking and performing headset in every way. When I called Lightspeed they
had to make one up for me so it took a few days before they shipped it, but I
was in no big hurry and shipping was only $5!! Lightspeed replaced this model
with the 30/3G a few years ago so the 25XL is no longer in production. I asked
them about getting support for the 25XL in the future and they said that is
no problem for at least 5-6 years and most likely a lot longer. They sold a ton
of these to airline pilots so they will be around a long time. They have a
nice battery saving feature if you forget to turn off the ANR, it turns itself
off. 2 AA batteries last a long time.... probably 6-9 months at the rate I
fly.
Good luck!!

You can lubricate your choke and throttle cables without taking them
off the carbs.
Part # 7435
CABLE LUBER SYSTEM - $17.95
"Prevent cable freezing and extend cable life by lubricating cable with the
"Cable Luber" system. Special precision machined lube block allows ease
of lubrication between cable and housing without removing the cable.
Just attach the Cable Luber to either end of the cable and insert nozzle
from aerosol can. Specially designed seals in block force lube down
inside cable housing. A must for the serious mechanic. Cable Life Aerosol
lubricates and rustproofs moving parts even at temperatures far below -50
degrees.

thats how you wreck a good plane its the worst part of tacking off and
landing at high speed near ground in normal opp. you speed up /slow down
very quickley with high speed taxis you are at risk to have some thing go
wrong at a fast speed for much longer get instruction in a light tail
dragger piper taylorcraft kolb drifter ect. it will save you money and plane
repairs from stalls ground loops ect airplanes are not toys they can and
haved killed and in a kolb you can be 100 feet off the ground before you
know you left

One day the pilot of a Cherokee 180 was told by the tower to hold short of
the active runway while a DC-8 landed. The DC-8 landed, rolled out, turned
around, and taxied back past the Cherokee. Some quick-witted comedian in
the DC-8 crew got on the radio and said, "What a cute little plane. Did you
make it all by yourself?"
The Cherokee pilot, not about to let the insult go by, came back with a
real zinger: "I made it out of DC-8 parts. Another landing like yours and
I'll have enough parts for another one."

The German air controllers at Frankfurt Airport are renowned as a
short-tempered lot. They not only expect one to know one's gate parking
location, but how to get there without any assistance from them. So it was
with some amusement that we (a Pan Am 747) listened to the following
exchange between Frankfurt ground control and a British Airways 747, call
sign Speedbird 206.
Speedbird 206: " Frankfurt , Speedbird 206 clear of active runway."
Ground: "Speedbird 206. Taxi to gate Alpha One-Seven."
The BA 747 pulled onto the main taxiway and slowed to a stop.
Ground: "Speedbird, do you not know where you are going?"
Speedbird 206: "Stand by, Ground, I'm looking up our gate location now."!
Ground (with quite arrogant impatience): "Speedbird 206, have you not been
to Frankfurt before?"
Speedbird 206 (coolly): "Yes, twice in 1944, but it was dark, -- And I
didn't land."
*************************************************************************************************
While taxiing at London 's Gatwick Airport , the crew of a US Air flight
departing for Ft. Lauderdale made a wrong turn and came nose to nose with a
United 727. An irate female ground controller lashed out at the US Air
crew, screaming: "US Air 2771, where the hell are you going? I told you to
turn right onto Charlie taxiway! You turned right on Delta! Stop right
there. I know it's difficult for you to tell the difference between C and
D, but get it right!"
Continuing her rage to the embarrassed crew, she was now shouting
hysterically: "God! Now you've screwed everything up! It'll take forever to
sort this out! You stay right there and don't move till I tell you to! You
can expect progressive taxi instructions in about half an hour, and I want
you to go exactly where I tell you, when I tell you, and how I tell you!
You got that, US Air 2771?"
"Yes, ma'am," the humbled crew responded.
Naturally, the ground control communications frequency fell terribly silent
after the verbal bashing of US Air 2771. Nobody wanted to chance engaging
the irate ground controller in her current state of mind. Tension in every
cockpit out around Gatwick was definitely running high. Just then an
unknown pilot broke the silence and keyed his microphone, asking: "Wasn't I
married to you once?"

Not Kolb related, but it is too cold to fly.... and continuing this
non-Kolb related thread...
On a clear and frosty January morn in Albany Ga, I was working tower &
ground control combined, and we had a Stearman in the practice area.
Albany had a crop dusting school, and the instructors were well known to
be a fairly "loose" group of people in terms of protocol... Outside
temps were in the 20's, and after about 45 minutes in the practice area,
the Stearman comes in and lands and while taxiing back to the ramp the
instructor asks the sort of question that every controller wonders how
best to answer...
"Hey ground, do you want to hear this poem I made up?"
"Stearman XXXX, go ahead."
"I hope I go to heaven when I die,
because then I'll get a new Stearman to fly.
But if I go the other way,
they'll make me fly it every day!!"
Not theologically accurate, but I could see where he was coming from...
One afternoon at TRI, I was working ground and Phil was working local,
we had a student from Miss Evelyn Johnson's (Google her, 57,620 hours)
school in Morristown on downwind for 23, completing his student cross
country. (Miss Evelyn sent all her students to TRI for their cross
country flights)
The C152 touched down, but did not turn off the active, but instead did
a touch and go. Since we are a TRSA, we needed to know what was
happening next, so we could give approach control the heads-up.
(Insert East Tennessee accent to all following transmissions)
"Cessna, 32Charlie, say intentions."
"Roger."
Cessna 32Charlie, say intentions."
"Roger."
Cessna 32 Charlie, TRI tower, SAY INTENTIONS."
"Tower, 32 Charlie, I am payin' tention' whut chu want me t'do?"
Don't remember what happened after that.

here's another...from Flying Tales of The Grey Baron:
Sayah Yo Reequest
The following interchange was overheard between Washington National
Approach and a Southern Belle (the tail number has been changed to
protect the innocent), and with apologies for attempting to reproduce
her accent. The time is about 4PM on a weekday; a year before the
strike. Approach is very busy with airline traffic. Marginal VFR.
Turn off your squelch and listen:
=93Washington Nashnul A-proach, this is Novembuh Oh-oh-oh Cholly Ho-tel
about five miles from Washington. Wez now three point five. Ovah."
=93Zero Charley Hotel, National Approach. What=92s your request?=94
=93Washington Nashnul A-proach, Novembuh Oh-oh-oh Cholly Ho-tel is VFR,
and we=92d lak to lan=92 at Washington Nashnul. Ovah.=94
=93Zero Hotel, say type aircraft and position.=94
=93Washington Nashnul A-proach this is Oh-oh-oh Cholly Ho-tel. We=92uh a
Pipuh Cherokee Six. It looks lak wez about ovah the bridge. Ovah.=94
=93Piper Charley Hotel. Maintain VFR. Squawk zero four fife two and
ident.=94
...and so on, with the Piper cluttering up the frequency with the
complete tail number and message address each time. Meanwhile she
descended without clearance to 1500 feet.
Approach in complete exasperation, tells her her transponder is not
working. She turns it from STBY to ON.
She is again reporting =93over a bridge,=94 and wanting landing
instructions.
Approach, about to leave his tree, says: =93Charley Hotel, we have
maybe 15 bridges in the Washington area. Due to heavy traffic suggest
you try Hyde Field or Washington Virginia airports. Frequency change
approved. Good day."

I have used teflon grease that I had on hand that I bought from the
trailer supply store. It is white and seems to work pretty good.

At 85 mph - depending on you're set up. If you've got really balanced controls,
maybe 90 mph - lucky you.
Well....the first thing that happens is the "stick" starts shaking so hard
that you can't hold on to it any more and then there's this God Awful
sound....but it's over with pretty
quick, cause the aileron controls or the aileron hinges fracture in
just a few seconds.
So you gotta land with the just the rudder and elevator. Kick right
to raise the left wing,
kick left to raise the right. etc. Don't need those stinking ailerons
anyway - right?
Really, they are there to stop all "the above" from happening before
it ever gets started.
And they work.
