Rick, I registered it as a ul trainer with EAA. Reasoning was so that I and my ul instructor could put at least 40Hrs. on it. Otherwise I would have to pay for fuel for someone else to fly my baby since I have no license student or sport. I'm not even sure this will work. Even if it does'nt if I get my license before 08' I could fly off my own time. Set me straight if this is wrong. Being registered as a UL trainer doesn't help you with the Jan 31, 2008 deadline. If you are building now, can you reasonably expect to finish by Jan 31, 2008? In actuality you would need to be finished sometime before this date. The last notice I got from FAA said they would gaurantee anyone who submitted their packet by Nov 30, 2207 that they would get their E-LSA experimental certificate. Now, if you can reasonably expect to meet the deadline, go online and get form 8050-88A, reserve an N number if you want a custom number, and call the nearest FAA FSDO and ask them to send you a form 8050-1 registration application. Fill out the two forms, make a copy of the letter granting you the custom N number and send it along with a Postal Money order for $5 and send it to the address shown on the form 8050-1 and in three weeks or so you'll get your registration. If you want to go EAB then proceed at your own pace and don't sweat it. When you want to register you'll use use form 8050-88 instead of 8050-88A, otherwise the process is exactly the same but there is no time limit. If they tally up to more then that, it means in reality your engine can not spin the prop as fast as you selected and/or have over proped the engine. Try lower pitch/Diameter or RPM until you get the HP your engine is capable of for that RPM. I designed my own prop selector program as well that automatically reduces the Dia or Pitch for the HP of your engine. Unfortunately it does not go past 40" diameter. I may have to haul it out and revise it for bigger diameters. So if you want more low end thrust as in a climb optimized prop then go for the extra blade, but if you are lacking top end speed the the 4th blade will slow you even more than the 3 blade. You would need a Sport Pilot License to fly the Experimental Amateur Built airplane. You would have the normal Class B type airspace restrictions, trip distance restrictions, etc., and the EAB airplane would have its requirements, too. As you mentioned, things like....fixed gear, fixed prop, max gross limitations, max cruising speed, etc. Mike in SW Utah PS. And beyond the "required" part, it makes just plain good sense to have at least a sport pilot license. The fact is, most EAB type aircraft (MkIII, Kolbra's, Xtra's, etc.) will spend a fair amount of time landing at a lot of local airports. There's a lot that the "pilot" of that EAB airplane should know in order to be safe, and not endanger himself and the other GA types out there. Things like; correct radio proceedure, proper flight ettiquette entering for entering an airport traffic pattern, and a host of a bunch of other things. Or you could just go without a radio, and land at private strips, and not sweat it. >From: "Paul Petty" >To: kolb-list@matronics.com >Subject: Kolb-List: sport pilot >Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2007 16:52:55 -0700 > > >Hey guys, > >Can a sport pilot fly an EAB aircraft as long as it meets the LSA limits >i.e. gross weight, speed ,HP, fixed gear prop ect??????? > >-------- >Paul Petty >Kolbra #12 >Ms Dixie >Final assembly! > > >Read this topic online here: > >http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=103776#103776 > > _________________________________________________________________ i'm making a difference.Make every IM count for the cause of your choice.
