Has absolutely nothing to do with Kolb Aircraft, building or flying>> Whoops, Sorry John and All. this list is the `wrong` way round when compared with other lists which I am on. On the others hitting `Reply` automatically sends your message to the individual NOT to the list. If you wish to respond to the list then the `Cc.` facility is used.. This tends to keep individual comments off the list. Still, no excuses. I have been here long enough to know better. Cheers Pat

    Subject: broken cage
    From: "Gray, Mark" <Mark.Gray@Takata.com>
I have been preparing my Firestar II for its airworthiness inspection and last night was sitting in it admiring the completed work. As I moved to exit the plane I heard a band and found myself flat on my back, the seat back support tube that crossed the cage behind the seat had separated from the cage sides. The side tubes had been ripped out leaving gaping fish mouth shaped holes. There was no sign of corrosion around the welds or in the tubes. If this had happened in flight I imagine I would have had a lot more to worry about than welding it back in and a little fabric repair. I don't think it would have been possible to control the aircraft without the seatback as there is nothing that could be easily used to support oneself in a position to hold the stick. I doubt I could have even reached the chute handle since it is located forward of the throttle. I weigh 230lb and am not very rough on my bird, so anybody flying a Firestar II may want to give these connections a good going over. I will be checking all the welds in my frame with magnaflux as soon as I can get my hands on one. Total time on the cage is approximately 400 hrs. Morning Folks: Sun and Fun 2007 NOTAM is 36 pages long. Of all these pages only one paragraph is necessary to get us ULs and Lt Planes into the UL strip: April 17-23, 2007 Sun'n Fun Fly-In ULTRALIGHT ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES ? All arriving and departing ultralight vehicles shall enter and exit from the south-southwest of the Lakeland Linder Regional Airport and shall remain below 500 feet AGL, remaining west of the large airport buildings. ? Be alert for helicopters arriving and departing at the same altitudes just to the east of the area reserved for ultralight operations. ? Radio equipped arriving aircraft monitor 119.25 until north of the east/west road on the south airport boundary. NORDO ultralight aircraft desiring to land at the ultralight grass strip prior to April 15, 2007, must pre-coordinate arrival information with the Lakeland Air Traffic Manager at (863) 648-3305. We are also the only aircraft authorized to land at LAL NORDO (no radio). Back to work. Still got lexan to do before I get the fuselage out of the "mole hole" (basement). Times a flying and I need to fly too. john h mkIII DO NOT ARCHIVE

Did the welds fail or was the tubing metal peeled out with the weld? Sounds like the welds are suspect, how did you weld them? Gas/Arc? What filler material? -------- Ray do not archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=106492#106492

Geez....I guess its a good idea to bring a camper.....that way you just get pushed down the hill and end up in the lake instead of getting run over. I would rather have thought campers to be bear or croc bait than maniac driver victims.....I guess the diference is bears and crocs are not as stupid as people can be. Gang, A while back I asked about a Kolb near the Denver area. One guy was mentioned but I cant find it in the archives. I have a friend wanting some flight time in a kolb. He just passed the sport pilot instructor written and the check ride is next. If anyone knows this guy can you give me a name and number? Hi Mark, When I first got my Firestar II (used), I noticed that the very same tube in my plane was curved. I inspected the tube and welds for cracks or breaks and could not find any. I then very carefully straightened the tube. I too realized that the seat back was deforming the tube so what I did was to make a support platform that transfered the pressure from the seat back to the main gear truss which is a heck of allot beefier. I made the platform out of 1/8" ply and placed wood stringers cut to the same thickness as the seat support tube in a pattern of an "H" (with a double horizontal leg) underneath the ply to transfer the pressure of the seat back. to the main gear truss. The two horizontal legs of the "H" line up between the seat stop bolts and the gear truss. Platform was a snug fit to make sure there was full support of the seat back support tube. I also ended up purchasing a heavier duty seat back from Kolb. Mine would bend right at the point where the seat makes contact with the seat back stop bolts. I have not had any problems with the seat back or the seat back support tube. Best Regards Carlos Grageda TBVE Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=106502#106502

of wood was and where exactly you were supposed to place it? | Thanks, | | -------- | Scott Scott/Gang: Just so happens I have a revised copy of the Kolb MKIII Builders Manual, 7/29/92. "INSTALLING LIFT STRUTS. The next step is the installation of the wing struts. Set the wing dihedral by raising the wing tip 1-1/2 inches (measured at the outboard rib). Install a shim under the wing at the H-supports to hold this position. Now the lift struts may be made to fit." That is verbatem out of the manual, and the distance and procedure I remember from doing mine in 1991. IIRC, the Ultrastar and Firestar were set at 1", outboard rib. Take care, john h mkIII

Hey Joihn H and everyone else that's flying into the Light Plane grass strip, As usual, I have to keep John H straight. The arrival procedue John H quoted is correct, except a couple of sentences earlier in the NOTAM have to be read first. "Special procedures will be in effect ONLY from 0700 to 2000 local from April 15 through April 23, 2007." "SOUTH SIDE OF AIRPORT CLOSED FROM SUNSET UNTIL SUNRISE LOCAL APRIL 15 - APRIL 23, 2007." "Lakeland Linder Regional Airport will be closed daily, April 17 through April 23, 2007 during the Aerobatic Demonstrations (schedule below). Arrivals and departures are not permitted during periods of aerobatic demonstrations. How do you expect me to find a window to get into the UL strip all the way from Alabama without that schedule? Up to my ears in lexan. Yep, Its a Lazair UL with twin Rotax 185 engines at 9hp each. I have flown it around some but at 35mph cruise its a bit wind challenged. Its full 3 axis stick and rudder pedals. Too bad the twin engine time doesnt count towards higher ratings. You can even put floats on these and still get 400fpm climb....normal climb is about 500fpm. Im getting a Kolb Ultrastar in its place as I just sold it.....its going to Gallatin, TN. -------- Ray do not archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=106555#106555 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/laz_mirage2_592.jpg

    From: "jb92563" <jb92563@yahoo.com>
I was in my twin engine(Rotax 185's) on final about 50' when one of the CDI units dismounted and the right engine flamed out. I shut down the left engine since it was causing an annoying yaw and glided it in. It actually glided father engine off than when Idling. Also when the right engine quit due to the CDI module comming loose I hit the ignition ground kill switch and got electrocuted....since it was a metal switch and somehome I completed the circuit with my hand on the switch. Considering the distraction of being zapped I was glad that I was able to concentrate on the task at hand and land the plane nicely. My hand was numb for an hour after though....but I remounted the CDI's much more securely to avoid a repeat performance. Actually Ray, several of us have flown our Kolbs as unplanned gliders... If you look back in the archives, there's detailed information... Ray: Sun and Fun 1984, there was a gentleman with a 4 engine Lazair with floats flying in and out of the float plane ditch in the UL area. He was bare footed, had his britches legs rolled up to his knees. He take off, make a very abreviated traffic pattern and plop back down in the ditch. Was a sight to see. The 4 engines sounded great! That was my first year at Lakeland. I already had my plans and instruction book for my Ultrastar kit. I was drooling over the several Ultrastars that were there, three or four. One of those was red and white sun burst with glass floats. It was a beautiful little airplane, but it did not fly. Dennis Souder was flying the factory Ultrastar, which out performed everything at the show. I hung on the fence when Dennis was flying, and followed him and the Ultrastar around like a puppy when he had it on the ground. When I got back home to Alabama my part of my kit had arrived and was sitting on the floor of the country store, engine and a box of parts. Three months later I was flying my Ultrastar. john h mkIII DO NOT ARCHIVE

Mike after looking at your airplane closer I have a couple questions. Did you make flaps for the X-tra? Im sure thats what the tubes are going to. And who made that gap seal? It's one of the slickest I have seen. Also the torque tubes to the ailerons look to be at an unusal angle. May just be the photo or the fact I havent noticed other X-tras in the past. About the flaps...did you make mark3 classic flaps and ailerons like i did? And are yours mechanicly deployed? Like I said bery nice job sir lets see more of her. Um the plane that is [Wink] Not trying to get fresh with the lovely passenger! Seams like every W-tra i see is different. In your case I notice a larger gap between the door frame and the nose cone and a tube in the fuselage above the door I havent noticed before. Have you flown it yet? If not where are you in terms of taxi testing and registration/inspection? Looks ready to go from here! do not archive -------- Paul Petty Kolbra #12 Ms Dixie Final assembly! Yes....they still fly gliders at Torrey Pines Gliderport about 2 times a year in the Spring for a month or so and around the Fall for a month. www.flytorrey.com I took my Paraglider training there....its beautifull. Blacks beach is also still nude as before but your not going to see many Model quality females.....it has become a popular hangout for the gay/lesbian community and you are more like to see big fat guys strutting along the beach hoping to attract another guys fancy. As a matter of fact I was warned by the paraglider gang not to look down at the bushes by the far end of the beach......so of course I did.....and instantly discovered guys in bushes doing each other.....and of course only visible from the air....isnt that special!!! The RC guys have taken to crashing into full scale gliders recently.....last week doing about $5,000 damage to the leading edge of a Glider and ending its short season at Torrey. I know that the RC's would routinely crash into paragliders and the occasional Hang glider......I think the RC'ers days at Torrey Gliderport are numbered due to those serious conflicts. OK, it's not *really* taken from a Kolb, but I couldn't resist... my father emailed this to me last night as he was scanning old slides. The year was 1977; I was 17 and the ink was barely dry on my new PPL when I rented a Cessna from the old Ramapo Valley Airport in NY and took my parents for a ride, when Dad took this picture... we flew over the day camp where I was working for the summer (my first job). Part of my job was cutting the grass and I cut some of it a bit closer than strictly necessary (DMH is, of course, my initials). Fortunately the boss didn't notice it... 123e93f.jpg -Dana -- -- The citizens of the United States are getting the government they deserve. Makes my mouth water, Boyd. Is that the Wasatch Range ?? Lar. Do not Archive. Yes that is the Wasatch between brigham and Logan... in the center of the photo,,,what looks like islands poking there heads through the clouds.... is indeed islands in the great salt lake. The haze was thick enough to look like cloud cover from a distance... but looking down the visibility is quite good. 5 or 6 miles or so.... kept a close ear on the dew point spread. Boyd

I went back thru all the pics I've taken of Kolbs over the years and measured the dihedral angle were possible. I've found anywhere between zero and 5 degrees total over the entire wing. Anything less than 1 degree per wing half tends to look like the wingtips are drooping to me. It seems that when building the mkIIIc the instructions said to rig the wings as straight as possible while making the forward and rear attach points. When attaching the lift struts, the wing tips were to be raised 1 1/2 inches measured at the outboard rib. I followed the instructions and when flying and I put the plane in a 30 deg bank and let go of the stick the plane wanted to continue to roll...( negative roll stability) when I rebuilt I doubled the dihedral by raising the end rib 3 inches... now when in a 30 deg bank the plane wants to stay put ( neutral roll stability). I could not tell any other differences. Boyd.
