Hi John W:
Talked to Ronnie Smith yesterday. I have a leaking oil pressure
sending unit. Only a drip, but enough to make a mess. Will this make
me fall out of the sky before I reach Nauga Field, LA???
We can add Ronnie as a tentative attendee for now. Give him a call
and give him another invite. I'll remind him again when I get back
from OKC. Leaving here Sunday morning, pulling 5th wheel, to attend
the SF Assn Convention. Will be back in time to get ready to fly to
John B's flyin.
Anybody in the OKC area??? I'll be there most all week with plenty of
free time. Staying at the Twin Fountains RV Park on the north east
side of OKC, about 7 miles from the downtown Sheraton, where the
Convention is being held.

Just heard from my buddy this afternoon while I was cutting the grass on the runway.
He flew his plane recently and the problem has been fixed. I had been suggesting
that he tighten up his tail cables and he did it a couple of times, just never
tight enough. Finally, got them tight enough and problem solved.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Hey Group,
I was wondering if I can get someone with a M3X with dual controls to
take a few close up photos of the control mechanism for me.
I presently have a center single control stick, and I plan on converting
it to "dual controls".
I sure would appreciate it!!
Thanks, Mike in SW

Hey John,
Just a few days ago I asked for an update regarding this problem your
friend was having. Thanks for the update. I was truly curious to know if
he got it figured out. Evidently, he has, but I don't quite understand his
solution, tho. You're saying, he tightened the cables to the rudder and
elevator and THAT fixed his problem?? I thought it was incredibly
difficult to turn right due to some stick control/aileron situation. Could
you explain more precisely what the problem and solution was? I really am
interested...so I don't encounter any ailments like these myself.
Appreciate it, Mike in SW Utah

Hey John H.
That is great! What would Ronnie S fly in? I remember a cessna. Does he have
something lighter and slower?
I did give John Cooley a bump. He has to work that weekend. Nobody understands
that better than me. It is hard for us guys with full time jobs keep up with
you "fly here, there, everywhere" retired guys.
You guys met Bruce Williams (Kitfox) and his wife Tina at MV 2004, the one I didn't
get to. They will be joining us and are looking forward to seeing you guys
again.
Just finished cutting the grass on the runway and even put down a little fertilizer.
Was going fly but thunder boomer just formed up. Will try to sneak away
early AM. Probably will cut the grass one more time and then that Friday morning
just before you guys start getting here.
We're excited here. Come on.

Mike:
He tightened up the tail wires. Most folks fly around with them loose
as a clothes line. They need to be tight enough to twang like a
guitar string. There is a lot of activity going on back there, and
loose tail wires agrevate problems.
Here is what John B said:
"I had been
>suggesting that he tighten up his tail cables and he did it a couple

Here is how I check to see if my tail wires are tight enough for me.
1-Grab the leading edge of either horizontal stabilizer with one hand,
and the leading edge of the upper vertical stabilizer with the other.
2-Now..........try to pull the two leading edges together. In the
process of pulling them together, if the wire at the station you are
pulling goes slack, to me, that indicates it needs to be tightened up
to the point that it will not sag when a pretty good pull is put on
the system.

Hey Mike in Utah,
Yep, it is fixed. I know it sounds strange that tightening up the cables that
brace the tail feathers fixed a roll problem. Kolbers that fold their tale on
any frequency may have witnessed this to some degree.
Basic deal is the controls (pitch and roll) are intergrated into the stick. The
way the elevator hinge and arm system work at the tail necessitates that both
horizontal stabilizers be lined up pretty close to the center of the pivot point
and perpindicular. Having the folding option and the design that necessitates
it is what contributes to the problem. If one or both of the horizontal
stabilizers/elevetors are allowed to move up or down it can put the sitck in
a bind.
I know it don't sound right. But you can test it yourself the next time you cables
are loose for inspection or maintenance. Move one or both of the horizontal
stabilizers up or down a bit. Brace it or have someone hold them. Then try
to move the stick fore/aft, left/right. You will notice the stick won't move
much off center. At least that was my experience when I was folding because
I was jamming a C-172 into a hanger with my Kolb.
The C-172 was for my daughter to build hours in for an Aviation Degree. Changed
to Air Traffic Controller in the Air Force. Stationed at Hill AFB just north
of SLC, Utah. Was real glad to sell that big tank C-172. May look you up on
one of the visits.
Hope this is helpful.

Subject: | HKS update ATTN:Dave Bigelow |
Dave, Just thought I'd check in and see how your HKS is doing. I'm up to
little over 20 hours and I'm beginning to figure the little engine out. I
have finally figured out how to synchronize the carburetors and thought you
might be interested in what I've found.
First off, does your engine have a balance line between the two manifolds?
Is it the latest ASTM compliant engine? Mine isn't, and the installation and
operation manuals that came with my engine are the same revision level as
those available online.
As I recall, you have the vertical ( HKS terminology) intake manifolds with
the carburetor over the head. These were apparently offered, as a pair, with
a vacuum port on one intake manifold or on both. I say apparently because
this is not documented. The installation manual has a fuel system diagram
showing a single vacuum tap for the fuel pump and the text speaks of this,
too (section 6.0 Fuel System and figure 5). However, newer pictures of the
engine on the web site show a balance line between the manifolds.
I have the horizontal intake manifolds, with the carburetor level with the
head. They have a vacuum tap on each manifold for a balance line between
them and are also undocumented.
Bottom line is this. The carburetor synchronizing instructions in the
operations manual do not work if you have a balance line connecting the two
intakes pneumatically. The balance tube does just as its name implies and
does it quite well, too, making it impossible to synch the carbs.
In my case, I was getting nice even vacuum readings and the engine seemed
smooth. Then, I used the technique for the Rotax 912 (Line Maintenance
Manual, chapter 12-00, pages 18 through 20) and the results were startling.
There was a 3" difference in vacuum readings at 3000 RPM once the intake
manifolds were isolated. Correcting this by adjusting the long throttle
cable, and nothing else, increased the RPM to 3500. In flight, my cruising
RPM, where Meadowlark can maintain level flight in still air, dropped from
4700 to 4500 RPM and max RPM at WOT went up to 6200 from 6100. I was also
able to decrease idle RPM from 1750 to 1600. The manual recommends a 1400
RPM idle, but even with the carbs synched as close as I can get them I find
it too rough.
Because Meadowlark, having a very large wing, is so slow, most of the power
of the HKS isn't used. Climb power is abundant, but I haven't been able to
get in a dawn flight to measure still air ROC.
The flip side of the low power cruise is excellent economy. I flew a total
of 4.5 hours on the last tank that included a couple of evenings of pattern
work for a total of 20 landings in that time. Refilling the tank took a
little over 8 gallons.
Once the rain stops, I'll get some fuel consumption numbers for the new
tuning.

Rick:
Could you explain the above change in performance.
I don't understand how balancing carbs has anything to do with rpm
setting and maintaining level flight.
