    Subject: self taught
I usually just lurk but want to add my experience to the mix. I am a self taught aviator. I started with about thirty years of RC building and flying so I at least knew how and why an aircraft stayed in the air and the proper way to land them. (well, mostly, he he) I got the bug after a flight in a two place quick silver. Purchased a weight shift eagle and away I went. I had a pretty clear 1800 feet of open ground in many directions so I had that going for me. (I used up all that and more some times). I then went on to a Cobra which was kinda three axis. This, I thought was cats whiskers. It still took me about three months of taxiing, ground hopes (yeah, hopes) and the like before I actually had enough talent to get flying. From there and about two more years of playing in my backyard, I went to building my first original kolb. Now, after all of that for about four years, you would think I would have a handle on the situation. Well, tail wheel, long fuse, more power, ailerons, etc., I found out how little talent I had. I catch on to things real easily as a mechanic and can drive anything with wheels, flat or not but this is a different picnic. I lived but gotta tell ya, had lots of hair on some of the things that happened. I have been down hard five times and soft a lot. I cannot tell you how many times that cuyunna quit on me. I would NOT event consider one on a firestar. Not enough power. 447 is about as light as I would ever go. If you push that II o II hard for any length of time (like one minute) it is going to cook. period. Hope you take this into account. I could not get help from anywhere when I started. Now this list exists and you can do yourself and your going to be widow a big favor and tell us where you are so we can help you (most, including me, would do it for free) If not, -- I have a saying I used when someone asks me how much to spend on an aircraft. I just say "It depends -- how long do you plan on being dead!!". If you are near me, I will help and walk you through everything you need to know and help set you up with training. I dont like dead bodies laying around. If not, just let us know where you live so we will know where to buy the parts when it is over. Please get help. I know. I now fly a slingshot with a 582 and getting a new 912 soon to push it. Going to have to learn my plane all over again. Sorry about the length. Ted Cowan, Alabama do not archive

TED No truer words could you speak...8-) I have over 1200 hours easy in Hanggliders and about 6 in little Nano trikes.. I'm now considering a Real Trike as my new means of Air time.. NO way would I just hop into one of these new Space ships they're calling a Trike... Geeeez you can spend 80K on these things... UN real.. I was looking at a Kolb and haven't yet completely put it out of my head.. Can you tell me the difference between what you have ( A slingshot ) and their Kolbra? and why do they have such tall landing gear? Its not as if they worry about Prop stikes 8-) Thanks Mark Vaughn -----Original Message----- From: tc1917 <tc1917@hughes.net> Sent: Thu, 9 Aug 2007 6:20 am Subject: Kolb-List: self taught I usually just lurk but want to add my experience to the mix. Of all the people on this list and the many pilots I have met I only know one person who actually taught himself to fly and live to tell the tale. You `other half` is absolutely right to be going on about insurance, but no insurance company in the world will pay out on an illegal pilot. That is what you will be if you try to fly without proper lessons and a licence. Dont be a fool. .Flying is a great sport but it is not worth getting yourself killed. Wise up Pat do not archive

Mark German let me take the controls of his Kolbra last night from the back seat. We went around the pattern a few times and shot some takeoffs and landings. After flying my Original (very light) Firestar for the last 20 years, there is quite a difference between them. Everything is faster including the landings. I thoroughly enjoyed the plane. If I lived in Columbia, MO then I would contact Michael Sharp he lives in Oak Grove, MO I think he was building one a while ago. http://www.frappr.com/?a=myfrappr&id=92602 But if I lived in Baldwyn, MS I would go north to the factory there should be a bunch of planes there in late September for the flyin. Frappr has a bunch of builders and flyers that you can contact and you can pick the one closest to you.

By nature and by disposition, good air traffic controllers are frequently self-confident, arrogant, independant and feisty. Opposed to bureaucracy, meddling, and rules tending to conformity. Controllers who do not possess these traits leave the ranks and move up to management. And then make up dress codes... So this doesn't surprise me at all. I echo all those warnings. Use AN(Aircraft) Quality hardware EVERYWHERE since that minimal investment will pay back by allowing your aircraft to withstand the loads it was designed for. Otherwise you are making weak points that will likely get you killed, or worse you'll live and then the wife will kill you SLOWLY! You have waited this long, its better you do it right so you can succeed with your dreams. That goes for training also. Getting to the point where you can Solo take-off, cruise and Land any kind of aircraft will get you off to a good start with an Ultralight. Untrained New pilots ALWAYS eventually respond incorrectly on the flight controls, thats why training is required. If you are wrecking your own aircraft on every flight, assuming you live, and have to repair it each time, does that sound like fun???? NO! Go get trained and THEN enjoy your new Ultralight. Ray PS: I told one guy that I would sell my Lazair to him AFTER he got some training.....he cleared a 1000' strip on his farm and wanted to fly. He is still alive to this day and has put off his flying ambitions until he gets some training. I know another guy who had about 5 hours training in Cessna's and took his Lazair ultralight out and destroyed the wing on his attempted take-off. (He attempted a X-wind takeoff in to strong conditions for his skill level) He has not flown in several years because the rebuild has taken all the fun out of his dream to fly, plus he is now a little scared to fly. Its better to get sufficient and relavent training! -------- Ray Riverside County, CA Do Not Archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=128326#128326

Its more fun to fly WITH them then AT them anyway but I can imagine that if an 8lb goose takes a quick wrong turn and ends up in your lap at 10mph "run down" to 120mph "coming right at you" its going to hurt something. Better off keeping a safe distance. [Wink] I cant imagine how to herd cats with a kolb though....care to explain that [Question] Ray -------- Ray Riverside County, CA Do Not Archive Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=128330#128330

I'm fixing a UL II-02 that had siezed and a little honing of the cylinder liner may work for the scuffing. I just bought an engine honing tool for $20 and plan to run that through the seized cylinder liner after I had removed the aluminum from the siezed piston that stuck to the liner using Muriatic acid. New Kimpex piston and rings is $45 plus you can get them oversized is you need to hone a lot more. A new cast iron liner is about $100. I also have a Cuyuna 430 as a backup and have seen them for sale from $200 used to $1200 new and are very common and easy to find parts for. I also plan to open up the fins on the engine to allow more airflow to the PTO cylinder, which seized. They sell modified "Flow Thru" heads like this already so I figure I would save a bit and modify my own. Subject: CHT & EGT control
    From: "jb92563" <jb92563@yahoo.com>
I was wondering what people do to control the temps CHT and EGT if they find they are exceeding redline? I figure the most important is the CHT and I figure that throttleing down is the way to cool things down a bit if you start to overheat? But how does EGT relate? What if EGT is redline and CHT is not? Does that mean you are to rich and the excess fuel is burning in the exhaust pipe? These questions would be for a Cuyuna UL II-02 lets say but is probably the same for all 2 cycles in principle. I wonder about this also. I don't have a EGT gage. I know my mixture is correct from reading my plugs and my Oil & CHT temps are fine so what do I care about EGTs. If I was leaning my mixture in flight I understand that it gives me a early warning about going too lean that is fine but I don't do that because I don't have in flight adjustable carbs. If I were to unload the prop in the air I understand that the EGTs will go up but again why would I care. If heat isn't being absorbed by my engine with in limits and my other temps stay in a working range isn't that a good thing?
