Each year at the end of the List Fund Raiser, I post a message acknowledging everyone
that so generously made a Contribution to support the Lists. Its sort of
my way of publicly thanking everyone that took a minute to show their appreciation
for the Lists.
Won't you take a moment and assure that your name is on that List of Contributors
(LOC)? As a number of members have pointed out over the years, the List seems
at least - if not a whole lot more - valuable as a building/flying/recreating/entertainment
tool as your typical magazine subscription!
Please take minute and assure that your name is on this year's LOC! Show others
that you appreciate the Lists. Making a Contribution to support the Lists is
fast and easy using your Credit card or Paypal on the Secure Web Site:
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
or by popping a personal check in the mail to:

I would like to thank everyone that has so generously made a Contribution thus
far in this year's List Fund Raiser! Remember that its YOUR support that keeps
these Lists going and improving! Don't forget to include a little comment about
how the Lists have helped you!

Ray, If the gunk was in the float bowl, chances are it's in the idle
circuit, the mid range needle jet, and the main jet, too. You don't
want to find that you have a circuit plugged or partially plugged on
climb out. Good old Gunk carb cleaner with the basket so you can soak
the carb body is a good way to go, then blow the passages out in
reverse with compressed air. Mikunis are similar enough to Bings that
you can use a picture of how the passages work to figure out what does
what.
I can send you a Bing drawing if you need it, but the coffee has to
kick in first. :-)

Vic, keep the Kolb. The Taylorcraft is a fine airplane but no easier
to land (they are both easy)
-However, if that Tcraft has new bungees and you are landing on
pavement there is NO way to
keep from bouncing. Owner/friend put in new ones and challenged us
to try, let everyone at the
airport give it a go. He won.
In addition you will be sitting with your head up in the wing roots
with limited side vision.
You will be paying for an annual every year unless registered
experimental.

Also, you should be able to find a manual for your particular carburetor on

I would check for dirt in the float needle seat. If it overflowed the
vents on one occasion... then wont pass enough fuel on the next,,,, the
common factor is the float needle seat.

Those Diagrams of the carb really makes it easy to check the right parts out.
Will "Gunk" disolve the Tar like crud in my carb?
It was thick like mollases.
I'll tear the thing down and give it a good soaking for a couple days and clear
out all the other passages with air and thin wires etc.
The Mikuni is a real simple carb.....can't see much else could be wrong except
blokages.

Hey all,
This project comes with a running160hp, not mounted. I'm not sure it makes
sense to hang that much extra wt. to the front of a 60 yr. old frame. Think
beer belly!
Also has custom made aluminum spring gear and axles.Do they bounce also?
Even has been line bored for brake lines.
I have to replace spars, build cowl and whatever it takes to keep it 51% and
well under 1320lbs. so I can fly with a sport pilot lic.
I'm going to have to take a 16hr. course to annual my own hand built Kolb
anyway. Don't figure, if I had gone EAB I wouldn't.
Probably a better project for Ellery but he's a little touchy about
Kolbs. Kinda like John H.
Nothing derogatory meant of course.

Here is the link for the Free XC Soar moving map software for PDA.
http://www.xcsoar.org/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page
Granted its designed for gliders but you can set a glide L/D ratio of 5/1
and it will show you how far you can go if your engine dies.
The other features more than makes up for any glider stuff, plus the screen is
configurable so you can select what is shown on screen anyway.
The download site also has the terrain files and airport databases.
Download & Read the manual as most of your questions are answered there, and there
is also a video that takes you through the setup if your rather watch than
read.
I can help as well.
Gizmos and gadgets are part of the fun and it gives you something to keep you
out of trouble while the bad weather keeps you on the ground.
Show this thing off to your buddies and they will be truly amazed that you paid
$1000 less for the same features, plus you can listen to tunes and get a last
minute weather report via wireless internet while sitting on the ramp preparing
for takeoff.

I depends on which PDA you get.
The software will NOT run on the "Palm OS" only on the
PPC windows mobile versions, so stay away from the "Palm" brand PDA.
If you stick with the HP iPaq, Dell Axim PDA's then you will be in good shape and
can use the PPC2003 version.
The "All" is a good bet because it will have all versions including the PC version
but it might be a huge download taking a fair amount of time.
After you have the software downloaded you can get the "Data" or generate it for
your area if none is already available.

Ever try using a sectional in-flight in an Ultrastar.
The confetti effect must be quite amusing to see from the ground.
I like the PDA option because I CAN have sweet nothings whispered in my ear...except
when I get the "terrain conflict" warning...the terrain always wins that
argument.

Subject: | Re: GPS recommendations/pda |
Here are the ones recommended by the users of these units:
HP iPaq Models:
Hx4700 (640x480 screen resolution Higher is better)
3950, 3955, 39xx, 54xx, 55xx (320x280 screen resolution)
xx = all models in that series.
Dell Axim Models:
x50v, x51v (640x480 resolution)
x50 (320x280 resolution)
Although the higher resolution looks a bit better on screen the XC-Soar just uses
the 320x280 mode anyway but some are saying it does look more clear anyway.
You also need a GPS card that plugs into the PDA's CF or SD slot.
or if you have a standalone GPS such as a Garmin you may use a cable to connect
it to the PDA(We don't link dangling cables)
Avoid the Blue tooth GPS as some have had trouble connecting to the PDA apparently(one
user says so).
Since we want reliability lets stick with the GPS plugin card types.
You will also want an extended life battery eventually since without it you only
have a couple hours of use before needing a charge.
Most do have a car charge cable so you can just wire it into your 12v battery and
not have to worry about the extended battery.

I fold my sectional into a plastic kneeboard and I have my GPS mounted on a bent
piece of lexan that slides right over the kneeboard. I really like the GPS
96. It is pretty easy to read at the angle you see here. It is water proof and
it will float. It last a long time on 2 AA nimh rechargables. I'd guess it
would last 12 hours or more.

I saw something really crazy at the Torrey Pines Glider port.
A guy took his dog a black Lab, Hang Gliding.
Had its own well designed harness and everything.....no reserve chute though.
The dog seemed to really enjoy it and I noticed it was also helping steer with

Don't know if Mikuni's have the same needle rotation issues as the
Bing. Shouldn't be very costly to replace the needle and clip. It's
been awhile, but as I remember Mikuni main jets were 1/4 the cost of
those for the Bing. If that holds, It's a sub $5 insurance policy to
replace the needle and clip. Might prevent one of those dasterdly
"Engine out/unlandable terrain" scenarios we've been hearing so much
about of late. :-)

Ray,
You have the right idea to remove all the jets and clean em with solvent and
also the thin wire.
I recently put my Honda Odessy dune buggy back together and had to clean the
gunk out of the carb with brake cleaner, it was not enough to blow the
cleaner through the main jet, I had to run a wire through it to get the
harder stuff out. Not getting all the jets completely cleared is a quick way
to melt your piston. Don't ask me how I know.

[quote="jindoguy(at)gmail.com"]Unless the statistics have changed very recently,
and I don't think they have, the big three killers of pilots are:
1) Continued flight into deteriorating weather
2) Failure to fly the aircraft in an emergency
3) Failure to manage the fuel supply
> [b]
Your statistics are worthless, because they are for CERTIFIED airplanes, not experimentals.
In experimentals, the causes of accidents are totally different
than in certified airplanes. The fact that you got this very basic and important
fact wrong is just the first reason why I would dismiss what you say. You
need to be credible and accurate before I would consider letting you advise
me on a safety item.
Your thinking that you can preflight, and catch everything that might go wrong
in something as complicated as experimental airplane is nothing short of fantasy.
Many very gifted, meticulous people have had structural failures in experimental
airplanes. It happens. There are many critical components that cannot
be tested for defects short of magnafluxing, and other advanced means. Much
of the wing structure is hidden in fabric never to be seen for years. So
again, when you say just do good preflight and good maintenance will negate the
need for a BRS is nothing short of redicuous. Too many people much smarter,
and more talented than you have been saved by BRS chutes. Sure some were
stupid, but many saves were very talented builders and flyers

that makes it a lot smoother in turbulence next to the storm. The weather cleared

I just finished reading JetPilot's reply, and unlike most of you was very
amused. Can't explain it, just was. My wife came up and asked what I was
laughing about. I attempted to explain to her the discussion about BRS
chutes, and told her that I would like one, but due to the cost could not
get one. She, like the smarta$$ she is pointed out that they don't work from
25 feet altitude. Got me there!

I think I am going to do a comparison. I want to take two Kolbs. One is a MkIII.
An Xtra or Classic, Doesn't matter. The other one will be a Firefly.
On the Firefly, I will treat the gas and engine with SeaFoam, install VG's, a grey
screen GPS, no gap seal, and an Ivo Prop.
On the MkIII, it get's no SeaFoam, no VG's, and does get a gap seal. It will also
get a color GPS, that's outdated, and swing a Warp Drive prop, and a BRS.
Ok. Here is the comparison. Whoever thinks the Firefly is the best little Kolb,
sign here.
Next, whoever thinks the MkIII (X or C) is the most photogenic, sign here.
Well!!! We put that argument to rest once and for all!!!
It is a good thing when you can settle something. Laughing is NOT supposed to
hurt!! Mike Welch

Yes Dana,
Apparently at some harmonic the vibration makes the needle and circlip rotate in
its hole and around the needle shaft.
Eventually the circlip fails and the needle falls into the jet into the idle position
and the engine dies or stays at idle.
Its a good idea to replace the needle and circlip every once in a while as a precaution.
Thats what I read somewhere here or on the Ultrastar forum.

I cleaned the carb out tonight using brake fluid and WD40, and a wire.
After disassembly and cleaning of what I could get to and a repeated cleaning,
wiring and blowing out the gunk I finally have a clean carb working right.
I fired up the engine and she runs off choke now.
The engine starts so easy....pull the cord about 6" through the compression and
she fires right up......cool!
I fiddled with the idle, idle air and needle position so that I could get a smooth
acceleration from idle to half power.
I think I need to read that Mikuni tuning pdf again....make sure I'm doing it the
right way.
I'm totally impressed with the thrust of my 2 blade wood Ritz prop.
I'm going to need brakes though as at 1300 rpm idle there's enough thrust to make
it roll.
