That looks a lot like a tank I have laying around (a friend gave
      it to me
for a generator but i never used it). Only hassle might be
      mounting
it. It's not transparent; do you have some kind of fuel
gauge?Negative, just the preflight method of dipping a clear plastic
tube as we do todouble-check the fuel gauges on the Cessna. I had
planned on fabricating my ownsimiliar to what you see on coffee urns,
but I sold it before it was done.To the rest of the list, my last post
to Dana about personal type stuff was meantto be sent off line to him.
I guess hitting the correct button is akin to rocketscience, about which
      I'm pretty uninformed.

I have my trailer setup so I can get my MK III in and out easily. I ran the plane
around the yard yesterday. The 503 seems to run well. It started right up and
ran good on the taxing around the yard.

I want to do a few things to it before I take it to my instructor/ test pilot.

I want to change the fuel filter and rebuild the fuel pump and change the spark
      plugs.

I also want to buy some new AN hardware for some of the things like the wing attachment
      pins.
Are these the right type of pins for the wing pins? I don't want to get the wrong
ones and have one break!! That would be deadly:(
      http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/clevispins.php

What are the best places online to order AN parts and other stuff like wheels brakes
      gauges and Rotax parts?

      Thanks,
      Grant

      Hi Ellery,

Thanks for the reply on the trim tab. Was the one you built on the Firestar
electrically operated? Do you plan the same type of tab on the Xtra you're building?
Why was the trim tab on Crystal's MkII so huge?

I will check the archives. If you come across that photo of the tab you built,
I'd sure appreciate it if you sent it to me. Do you think 3" X 12" would be
big enough for a MkIII, of should it be more like 4" X 14"? Or whatever?

                                                       Thanks, Mike Welch

      Mike

I Built a trim tab into one of the elevators on my Firestar like your talking
about it worked great it was 3"X 12" controllable in flight, I sold the Plane
to a Guy in Minnesota but I think I have a pic somewhere of the modification
      I did on it.

I think theirs PICS in the archives I did of this mod.

I could us the trim alone to land the plane of course in perfect conditions no
      gusting x winds

Well, this weekends fuel sender experiment was successful.

I have added a fuel level gage to my E1 instrument by hooking up a regular float
type fuel sender to the instruments Oil-Pressure sensing line.

Now a have a fuel level indicator with a low fuel alarm as well....hooray!

Stratomaster E1 3.5" instrument now shows:
      - Hobbs time
      - Elapsed Time
      - EGT
      - CHT
      - RPM
      - Fuel Level

With alarm settings and red warning light/flashing display on each!

Thats a lot of bang for your buck in a $199 digital instrument....cant say enough
good about it, and it saves a ton of dash space.

And who said its not rocket science.....of course it is...and that makes it fun
as well.....Monkey learning the switches.......so far only three....instrument
      panel power, Ignition and choke.

The Flying part is coming up next.....and the resulting pictures/movies

Mine also has the UL-202 that I fixed after a seizure (Engine not me [Wink]) but
the early models also had a Cuyuna 430, which I also have as a spare.

Parts are still easy to get for the Cuyuna 202 and fixing one is pretty easy.

You need 30-40 HP and if weight is not limited to 254 lbs I would personally try
      a light 4 stroke like a 1/2 VW.

      The UL-202 weighs about 58lbs, the 430 about 65lbs and a 1/2 VW about 95 lbs and
      produce 35, ~35 and ~40 HP respectively.

Put a Stratomaster E1 engine monitor instrument on your X-mass wish list $199

I just put one in my Ultrastar to save panel real estate and it does
CHT, EGT, RPM, Hobbs and FUEL level....plus Alarms on all these things and a dummy
alarm light/flashing display item to direct your attention to any problem.

It is completely configurable for sensors, limits, alarms etc etc.

It will do more (multiple CHT's, EGT's, oil presure, Oil Temp, Water temps etc)
but that is all I need for now.....these things are fantastic and cost LESS than
all the instruments is replaces! Plus its just one 3.5" standard instrument
      hole used.

The Fuel level sender is hooked up to the Oil-Presure lead....my own modification
and works great plus I have a low fuel alarm setting as a bonus.

I'm delighted by what this thing does.

Seems an ultralight or homebuilt would be a dumb thing to steal... it's a
small community (especially these days when everybody's online), and the
      aircraft would likely be recognized.

In the big days of drug smuggling in the 1970's, though, almost any plane
with decent cargo capacity in the southern states was fair game.
