Possums- Thanks for the video. Anybody taking similar videos, please post the links,
especially T/O and landings. They show the great climb rates, as well as
the glide factor.

IMO much of the pucker factor in Xwind landings comes after the wheels
are on the ground. If you transition to putting the tailwheel down
quickly (thinking the hard part is over), the wing angle has increased
quickly and you gotta be ready with a lot of aileron for the wind that
will catch under the upwind wing, not to mention have your happy feet
ready to keep it from weather-vaning (leading to ground looping).
Here's a recent good video showing the big boys can have the same problem.

Good catch of the day guys......I can barely stop laughing long enough to hit send.

I'm sure every Kolber just has a big grin right about now.
Just like a woman with assets, she is always looking at another
woman with bigger assets and getting jealous when the competition
steals the attention by getting cranky and pissy about it. [Wink]

Ben,
If it had been a high wing Kolb, he could have side slipped it on down and
planted the up wind wheel and kept it straight. If you can keep a Kolb
locked on the center line in a crosswind with a side slip, the landing is a
non event. If you can't keep it on the center line, it is time to make a
straight into the wind landing on a taxiway and hope someone is there to
wing walk you to some safe area.
With a low wing and tricycle gear, he had to crab into the wind to keep
close to the center line and at the last second straighten it out and get
the up wind wing down. Too much to do with too little time to get it done.
They were lucky he got it back off. The Kolb has the advantage that it does
not have much fuselage aft of the main wheels to weather vane.

Subject: | Firestar project |
I mounted up one wing per instructions from Dennis at TNK. The only change I
made was to fabricate a forward wing adapter channel, to make up the 2 1/2" difference
between the airframe wing brackets and the wings that are being fitted
to the plane. I chose to make the channel instead of using structural channel.
Structural channel has a sharp outer corner, and a tapered flange. The sharp,
squared corner would not let me get a flush, uniform fit to the old bracket
welded to the inner steel rib. I did not like the tapered flange of structural-
it could start wearing unevenly on the bolt, and the thin part of the taper
was where the load was. I heated and formed a rounded edge channel 2 1/2" wide
x 2 1/2" long with a 1" flange, made out of 1/8" hot rolled flat stock. Three
5/16" bolts secured it to the wing bracket, and when the AOA was right the
last hole for the wing pin was centered nicely on the other flange. I did have
to run a rope out to a tree to hold the wing for
marking- the wind was erratic today, and kept swinging the wing back.
The wing folds right back, but the wing holding bracket supplied by TNK was
not lined up with the new wing's holding tube. The wing's tube was about 9" to
the rear, actually past the end of the fuselage main tube. I took some flat
stock and made a couple of "J" brackets. I welded a 1/2" nut to the back of the
upright of the "J", and cut a piece of 1/2" threaded rod to go through the holding
tube. I padded the "J" brackets with some rubber moulding held on with
plastic ties. Slide one end through, spin the other "J" bracket on, and set the
wing in place. It takes about one minute to assemble, and gives me a lot more
ground clearance than if the wings had fit. No flying weight added, either.
Prop clearance is now about 3" from the aileron. I had to order a couple of longer
aileron control tubes from Travis at TNK- mine were about 2" too short.
All the snow finally softened up to the point where I could clear off the tarp
on the other wing. It is in my living room, and the patches are fewer and
smaller than the first one.
The Pre-Val spray kits are $4.99 at my local NAPA store, and I picked up a
laser digital thermometer from Harbor Freight for about $40.00. Works great.
So far, so good.

Subject: | Vamoose for Sale |
Folks, the time has come. Ol' Lar is getting ready to retire, and
preparing for a life of traveling. These plans don't have room for more
toys beyond the boat and the camper, so Vamoose has got to go.
For all you want to know about Vamoose, look on my website at
www.gogittum.com and click on the "Building Vamoose" link. You're also
welcome to email me direct at: biglar@gogittum.com
I don't want to make this a long, drawn out process, so I'll sell this
complete Mk III Classic for $10,500.00, including the trailer. I have
something over $30,000.00 invested in it. (I stopped counting at
$24,000.00, and that was a long time ago) All that's needed to finish
it is a reduction drive for the engine, (or a different engine) a
battery, and cleaning of the fuel system. Prob'ly will need new fuel
pumps, too. Prop is a 3 blade 72" Warp Drive with nickel leading
edges. Trailer had new tires and fresh packed bearings for the 800 mile
tow from Palm Springs, CA to Santa Fe, NM last year. It towed smooth
and easy at 65 - 70 mph, and could hardly tell it was back there.
The plane is in the trailer and stored at Santa Fe, NM airport. It's
registered as "Experimental" and is numbered "N78LB."
Lar.
P.S. In the near future, Der Bug is also going up for sale. It's a
1969 VW Beetle with the Baja Bug conversion, 2110cc engine, (same as on
Vamoose, but with dual Webers instead of fuel injection) Many, many
upgrades and extras, and I'll sell it for $5,500.00.
P.P.S. Sorry, but I won't be seeing you at Monument Valley this
year. I hope y'all enjoy yourselves up there. It's a great place and I
have a lot of great memories of previous trips.
